Many of you will know by now, that my husband and I are setting up our own Beaver Scout Colony! :P

We got our name badges today. Lee is to be known as Wolf, and me Fox!

He's more like a sheep in wolves clothing

We have our first meeting next week, and I'm really looking forward to it. We (more by luck than judgement) have taken all the special needs children - we have 2 with behaviour problems, James with ADHD and AS, and we have a child with a nut allergy.

I am feeling quietly confident.

Wish me luck!

Good luck Sam. I don't know whether I mentioned it but I am a trained gymnastics coach and I had boys with special needs in my class. To be honest they were much more satisfying to teach than many of the other kids and so eager to please. The trick is not to treat them any differently but to make sure that you keep to the same structures and routines if you can....Oh and loads of praise.

I don't know why I'm telling you this as you already know it and you'll be great!!

I thought aabout this tonight, and you know what - most of the boys without special needs are more of a handful because we expect the problems from the kids with a diagnosis or specific problem. It's the other kids I worry about!

good luck with your new venture...I think it is really important that all children get the opportunity for something like this. Olivia has tried 2 mainstream brownie packs - both of which could not handle her and at one of her packs she had a NCH 'befriender' that was employed to initially settle her in (she stayed with her for 18 months until things became so bad we took Olivia out before she was excluded!)
She now goes to a pack called scoutlink - this is a group that take children with all kinds of need that don't or can't fit in to mainstream groups. Sam..if you need any info on them I would be happy for you to mail me privately and I can pass on the relevant contact numbers.

 well done and have fun!

cira.tees.ac.uk then click on the blue writing, it will give a whole list of different packs, scroll down to 2nd Northalllerton scoutlink. Hope it works...not very good at the complicated stuff!

:D Wow, what a wonderful brainchild.

If Beavers takes off, I wouldn't mind setting something like this up near here. It looks like yours is the only one.

Is that your Olivia on the message board who likes Scooby Doo and Sports Day? :D

yes it is....she was looking through the photos section and said she wanted to talk to steven...so I let her chat away. I think there is an email address for Steven Brown. He's a great guy, full of energy and I'm sure will be really helpful. I am happy for you to say that Olivia's Mummy gave you his details!
