You know a thought came to me today while painting the ceiling......What is it really for? What is education?

I think for me education is about learning, but learning what?

As a special needs child in a mainstream school I worry about some of the 'lessons' my child is learning on a daily basis.

Surely the basis of education is about teaching children about the world around them and equiping them with the tools they need not only to live in it, but to make a difference.
The lessons I want my children to learn are tolorance, understanding, empathy. I want them to feel the worth of their own opinions and feel free to voice them when they feel the need but also to recognise the rights of others to their own thoughts. I want them to know that they have a place in the world, but it is a place of their choosing and not a place that society thinks they should fit into. I want them to feel free to love unconditionally, without fear or predudice. I want them to have the freedom to be themeselves at all times without fear of retaliation or bullying.

Does school teach my child these lessons? No I don't think so.

In the past School has taught my child that different can be a bad thing and that rather than celebrate those differences he should put all his efforts into pretending to be 'normal' the same as his peers.

School has taught him that he should tell someone when he is being bullied but on doing so he has then been taught that for some children, special children, it is something that they must learn to live with and turn a blind eye to.

In the past school has taught my child that telling the truth is a bad thing by twisting the thoughts in his head and failing to understand that his interpretation of the world may be different but that doesn't make him bad, or a liar.

I think the most unforgivable thing school has taught my child in the past is that he is a failure, when really this is a child with a pure heart, who's interpretation of the world is seen as wrong because it isn't seen by the majority, a majority who through ignorance are depriving themselves of a very special and innocent view of the world around them.

This for me is why the education system needs to change. Much less emphasis on exams and curriculum and more emphasis on giving the kids a feeling of worth and teaching them real skills that will really HELP them when they walk away from school.

Right rant over...Back to the painting :)

And for any of you wondering where this came from......Pink Floyd, another brick in the wall, was listening to it this morning, just got me thinking :D

I read that bit and my first thought was 'so that the beds dont fall on your head'

Schools are crap for any special needs kids, I had Brandons teacher complaining again yesterday that he wasn't doing his work, I told her that he found it boring and her reply was that we all find things boring but still have to do them!

A lot of teachers just aren't interested in making the extra effort for our kids, that's why they struggle as much as they do.

Our school have taken to drawing pictures on the paper, and producing nice little writing frames for James so that he will complete his work. He just cannot cope with a blank white page!
If you stay ready, you won't need to get ready!
