Mandalore of the Mando'ad/Lore Master Posts: 222 Group: Members Member #24 Joined: March 23, 2005	INDEPENDANT Capital Ships Corellian Frigate Description: The Corellian Frigate is a design which predates the formation of the Empire, but is still sold in reasonable numbers, although it is not as popular as its sister design the Corellian Corvette. Keeping with Corellian designs the Frigate is fast and well armed, however it does not carry as large an armament as other frigates such as the Nebulon B. While the Corellian Frigates sales have never been high, and have been further eroded by the Nebulon series of Frigates, the fact that it is faster, more maneuverable and slightly tougher has gone un-noticed by all purchasers, especially when numbers of Nebulon Frigates for sale dropped to near zero as the Empire and Republic bought up all available ships during the civil war. In combat the Corellian Frigate has difficulty dealing with multiple opponents, but on a one for one basis can stand up to any ship in its class. KDY Nebulon-A Frigate Description: The Nebulon-A is the predecessor of the famous Nebulon-B Frigate, and is essentially the same ship. With increased automation and the size reduction of a number of systems the Nebulon-B managed to do the same job with a smaller crew. Less manueverable and with a slower hyperdrive speed than its replacement, the Nebulon-A still makes a fine ship in its own right, but no match for most other capital ships. With the double lower hull needed for its larger crew requirement, the Nebulon-A does actaully mount more weapons than the Nebulon-B, but still manages to come out behind most other modern warships. Nebulon-A's are most often refitted using systems from crippled Nebulon-B's, boosting their efficiency up to reasonable levels, these refitted vessels are fairly common within the Rebellion (and later the New Republic) which needs all the capital ships it can get its hands on. KDY Nebulon-D Frigate Description: The Nebulon-D is the latest in the line of Nebulon Frigates from Kuat Drive Yards, and where the Nebulon-B was mainly designed for the Imperial Navy, the Nebulon-D was designed to boost Kuats flagging sales in the open market. The Nebulon-D has a set of 4 secondary hulls set at 90 degree angles from its primary hull where the Nebulon-B had only a single secondary hull, and the Nebulon-A had twin secondary hulls. This arrangement allows the ship far more internal space, as well as a far larger complement of weapons than its predecessors. However to allow a view from the command tower past the upper of the secondary hulls, it had to be moved to one side, but still leaves the command crew with a limited view forwards, this is a small limitation given that a ship this size is usually piloted using sensors and view screens. The Nebulon-D was also designed with more powerful weapons to use against Starfighters, since its predecessors had problems dealing with the heavily armoured and shielded fighters used by all sides in the galactic conflict. The Republic and Empire both bought limited quantities of Nebulon-D's, however the majority were sold to civilian trading companies, and to planetary governments. Bell-Braben Corollis Space Station Description: Corollis Space Stations may only be slightly longer than a Super Star Destroyer, but because they are cuboid structures their internal volume dwarfs that of many other space vessels. However they are a picture of simplicity in their construction, and without a massive superlaser or hyperdrive to mount inside they actually can carry far more than even a Death Star. Corollis Space Stations rotate on their axis to create a weak artificial gravity which is boosted using conventional gravity plates, but this allows the docking facilities in the middle of the station to remain weightless, providing the station with the best of both worlds. Each of the four main sides are full gravity areas, and are sprawling cities with the main structure of the cargo and docking areas as their sky above. Small parklands are laid out to allow some feeling of a planetary surface, but space is at a premium even in these huge constructions, so most of the surfaces inside are built up with skyscrapers reaching up towards the central core. Although unarmed, Corollis Space Stations are well armoured, and can stand up to even bombardment by capital ships for a short time, however the stations usually have a large defence force and possibly even a capital ship docked inside for their defence. These stations are usually put into a planetary orbit and allow traders access to the planets markets without having to land on the planet itself where restrictions will no doubt be somewhat tighter than they are aboard the station. Because of the simplicity of these stations they require only a small crew to operate, however subsiduary tasks such as customs, policing and cargo handling will require extra people to do, these make up some of the huge populations that live, work and play inside these impressive pieces of space born architecture. Leviathan Techno-Organic Lifeform Description: Leviathans are naturally occuring space travelling creatures, although some conjecture exists that they were genetically engineered at some time in the past because it is thought that no creature could evolve a motive capacity capable of propelling itself through hyperspace. But no matter how Leviathans evolved, they breed, live and survive in space, and have large internal areas which can be refitted into crew quarters, passenger areas and cargo bays. This makes these fast travelling space creatures ideal for some kind of domestication into living space vessels, which has become common on some outer rim worlds, where activist groups have not made the slavery of these intelligent beings illegal. Leviathans are fairly passive, and not suited to life as a combat vessel, however their fast sublight and hyperspeed drives make them ideal cargo and passenger ships, although life support systems must be fitted to these vessels (the shields and tractor beam listed above are also artificially added systems, as are the control panels, etc to control the vessel, although all other abilities and systems are organic and natural to the Leviathan). Leviathans are best controlled by splicing another living being into the nerve clusters of the ship, this allows the "pilot" to control the vessel with his thoughts, but does mean that they can never again be removed from their place aboard the living ship as the two beings become somewhat interdependant, some beings are more suited to this role than others as the nervous systems are extensive and must be compatible. If no "pilot" is installed in a leviathan, a crew can control and command the vessel, but this is a far more clumsy way of flying these graceful and manueverable space creatures. Hoersch-Kessel Vandium Class Bulk Freighter Description: The Gundark-class Patrol craft has some resemblance to a castle with four towers. The designers of the four weapon platforms rather traced the lineage to the four-armed anthropoid, that is famed and feared for it’s offensive skill. Menotrop designed the vessel mainly for its own home-system defense, but with the destruction of the Empire, it also gained some popularity with struggling planetary governments. Modified CEC Corvette Description: The Corellian Corvette has been a successful design for many decades, but as the Galactic Civil War dragged on, these vessels which were once considered fast and well armed became average, then poor combat vessels, and for the small cargo holds they contain, they were also considered to be too expensive for transport vessels. However, never one to to let their sales decline, the Corellian Engineering Corporation began selling this modified variant of the Corvette, slightly more bulky than the original and therefore less manuverable, the design made up for it in other areas. With faster engines capable of outrunning Star Destroyers, more cargo and passenger capacity, and a wider variety of weaponry, the Modified Corvette is still not capable of equalling a front line battlecruiser or destroyer, but is more than capable of handling itself as a fast transport or courier, especially with the new added landing bays which can carry up to 12 starfighters for defending the vessel. The weaponry carried by the Modified Corvette is light for a military vessel, but with long ranged Turbo Lasers for dealing with Capital Ships, Anti Starfighter Cannons for close defence, and a heavy hitting Dual Proton Torpedo Launcher, the Modified Corvette is well rounded for a transport vessel. Kuat Shipyards Hyperspace Transporter Description: During the early days of the Old Republic hyperspace travel was extremely expensive as were vessels capable of travelling through hyperspace. One solution to this was the Hyperspace Transporter, a massive vessel which had enough room inside for smaller vessels to dock and be carried to their destination. With enough room for 170 light freighters to dock inside the Hyperspace Transporter could carry them to their destination quickly and cost effectively. As hyperdrive costs dropped, and hyperspace travel became more common, these vessels began to become less popular, with them becoming obvious targets for pirate attacks. However the Republic government still supported the idea of these vessels, and all official Republic cargo was still carried aboard them. As the Empire rose to power, these vessels were considered too weakly armed for Imperial cargoes, especially during the turbulent Clone and Galactic Civil war years, however they remained too valuable an investment to be written off and continued to serve across the galaxy. These days they are sometimes seen as troop transporters and cargo vessels within the Imperial Fleet, and on very rare occasions still serving their original purpose, keeping the flow of cargo and trade across the galaxy moving. VenteX Construction Yards Fire Runner Corvette Description: As smugglers, pirates and rebels used their starships for avoiding Imperial blockades and patrols, demands for fast vessels capable of outrunning Star Destroyers and Interdictor Cruisers increased. Although the Corellian Corvette was a popular choice for this kind of operation, VenteX Construction Yards came up with this design for the same role, capable of high speeds for a short time, these vessels were designed specifically to race through blockades, and to outdistance gravity wells to keep the vessels passengers and cargo out of Imperial hands. Although not heavily armed, the addition of concussion missiles, allows the vessel to hit very hard at anyone in its way, and the high speed of the engines even when not on their boost setting means that the Fire-Runner matches speed with even modified Corvettes. Although never as popular as the competition, the Fire-Runner managed to attract a few high profile purchases, and managed to attract the attention and disapproval of the Imperial authorities which managed to attract even more sales.
