Darth Revan

Sith Lord Darth Revan"Revan was power. Staring into his eyes was like staring into the heart of the Force. Even then, you could see the Jedi he would slay etched on his soul." — Jedi Master Kreia, in Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords

In the Star Wars universe, Darth Revan is a fallen Jedi and Dark Lord of the Sith. Darth Revan is featured in the video game Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, which is set 40 years after the Great Sith War and the fall of Exar Kun, or 3,956 years BBY.

Before the Wars
When Revan was first being trained as a Jedi Padawan, he was found to be very strong in the Force. His close friend Malak was strong in the Force as well, though Revan was undeniably the stronger of the pair. Revan's first Jedi Master was Kreia, though he learned from several others, including Masters Zhar, Dorak, and Kae. But after learning from these Masters, he came back to learn more from Kreia. After the Jedi Civil War, Kreia was overcome with guilt and confusion about Revan's fall. She journeyed to Malachor V, where she was corrupted by the dark side, becoming Darth Traya.

The Mandalorian Wars
Nearly 4,000 years before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, a warrior race known as the Mandalorians began raiding worlds on the edge of the galaxy. The Jedi Order insisted on staying out of the war, feeling that the true threat had not yet revealed itself. Many younger Jedi were unwilling to wait as the Mandalorians assaulted planet after planet, and so Revan and his friend Malak organized a force of rebellious Jedi Knights to assist the Republic in defeating the Mandalorians. Revan proved to be not only one of the most powerful Jedi in history, but also a master tactitioner. He was willing to sacrifice entire planets so as to make the most important ones impenetrable. And despite taking massive casualties (oftentimes as many as ten Republic soldiers for every Mandalorian), Revan was consistently able to outmaneuver and overwhelm the enemy both in space and on the ground.

The final battle of the war took place at Malachor V. Revan sent his most disloyal men to lure the remnants of the Mandalorian fleet there, where a Mass Shadow Generator had been placed. Overseeing its use was the Jedi Exile, whom gave the order to activate it. The result nearly destroyed the planet. Few on either side survived.

At Malachor V, Revan discovered the Trayus Academy, where he was corrupted by the teachings of the Sith. The planet itself was an ancient storehouse of the Sith; steeped in a darkness so great that it almost destroyed Revan. He was able to survive this darkness only by giving into the dark side of the Force. Taking the mantle of Dark Lord of the Sith, he began to corrupt other Jedi easily.

The Star Forge
After his corruption, Revan took ships beyond the known galaxy in search of an ancient artifact known as the Star Forge. For several years prior to the war, Revan and Malak had been researching artifacts in reference to this powerful Star Forge. They discovered that it was a massive space station with the ability to produce an almost limitless number of ships, accomplished by siphoning power from a nearby star as well as feeding on the dark side energies imbued within it. Revan and Malak, now beholden to the dark side, created a massive fleet to destroy the Old Republic and the Jedi, reforming the ex-Republic forces who followed them into a militaristic empire.

Bastila and her Jedi confront Darth RevanThe reinvigorated Sith won battle after battle, until a young Jedi named Bastila Shan entered the fray with her Battle Meditation. This rare and powerful Force ability increased the combat effectiveness of the Old Republic's forces and sapped the will of enemy combatants. Even with this power, however, the Old Republic's forces knew that they could not hold out forever against the Sith. In a desperate attempt to end the war, the Old Republic set a trap for Revan and Malak, during which Bastila and a team of Jedi boarded Revan's flagship and managed to corner the Dark Lord on the bridge. Thought by many to be the most powerful Sith Lord of all time, it is likely that Revan would have defeated Bastila and the remnants of her Jedi strike force. However, Malak, likely knowing he could not defeat Revan in personal combat, took this opportunity to kill both Revan and Bastila with one swift stroke. He fired upon the flagship from a nearby battle cruiser, but was successful in killing neither his master nor Bastila. Revan, nearly dead and mentally destroyed, was captured by the Jedi. His broken mind was reprogrammed by the Jedi Council to hide the Dark Lord's old identity, while enabling the Jedi to use Revan's subconscious memories to locate the Star Forge and destroy it.

Revan was enlisted as a soldier in the Old Republic army and placed under Bastila's command on the Old Republic warship Endar Spire. Malak, thinking his master dead, devoted all his forces to the hunt for Bastila. In orbit over the world of Taris, the Endar Spire was attacked by a Sith fleet and destroyed. Bastila managed to escape to the planet's surface, followed soon after by Revan and fellow Republic soldier Carth Onasi. The Sith blockaded Taris, intent on capturing Bastila. They were unaware that the young female Jedi had already been taken prisoner by a swoop gang called the Black Vulkars, who intended to give her to the winner of an underground swoop racing tournament as a slave. Revan eventually succeeded in rescuing her when he infiltrated and won the tournament. In orbit, Darth Malak, deciding that the search for Bastila was taking too long, gave the order to destroy the entire planet. Positioning themselves in strategic positions, the ships of his fleet unleashed a devastating planetary bombardment that wiped out nearly all life on Taris's surface. Revan, Bastila, and Carth, along with their newfound crew, barely escaped in time aboard the Ebon Hawk, formerly the personal spaceship of the late Taris crimelord Davik Kang.

Revan and his companions fled to the Jedi stronghold of Dantooine, where Bastila convinced the Jedi academy council to retrain the amnesic Dark Lord in the ways of the Jedi. After Revan completed his formal training, he and Bastila were sent to investigate an ancient stone structure. Inside, the two uncovered an ancient artifact known as a Star Map, a relic of the long-forgotten Infinite Empire of the Rakata. Though the Map was not complete, it pointed the way to the worlds of Tatooine, Kashyyyk, Manaan, and Korriban, on which more Star Maps could be found. Only with the combined information of these five worlds, Revan discovered, could the location of a mysterious Rakatan artifact called the "Star Forge" be found.

Revan, Bastila, and their companions journeyed to these worlds, tracing the steps Darth Revan had taken years before. On each planet, the powerful dark side aura of the Star Maps had created perilous conditions that made access to the Maps difficult. Additionally, the crew of the Ebon Hawk found themselves hunted by Sith and bounty hunters, and confronted with the problems of the local populace at every turn.

After discovering the fourth Star Map, Revan and his allies were captured by the Sith flagship Leviathan. They managed to escape from their holding cells, but, as they fled toward the Ebon Hawk, Revan was confronted by Darth Malak, who revealed to him his former life as the Dark Lord of the Sith. A vicious lightsaber duel ensued, culminating with Bastila's capture by Malak. Revan was forced to deal with Malak's revelation and his loss of Bastila as the quest for the Star Forge stepped up, until at last it was found in the home system of the ancient Rakata.

After gaining the support of this race, Revan was forced to confront a fallen Bastila. Following weeks of torture at Malak's hand, Bastila had at last given in to her hate and had fallen to the dark side. She was now, she claimed, the Dark Lord's new apprentice. His original apprentice, a former Jedi named Darth Bandon, had previously been slain by Revan during the search for the Star Maps.

Atop an ancient Rakatan temple, Bastila attempted to entice Revan to reclaim his former title of Dark Lord of the Sith. This was the climax of the quest for the Star Forge, and it ended with Revan, once again, making a choice that would change the fate of the galaxy.

Canonical Light Side Ending
Revan made the choice of a Jedi, rejecting Bastila's temptation. Enraged, Bastila retreated to the Star Forge. Revan and the crew of the Ebon Hawk pursued her as an Old Republic fleet commenced an assault of its own.

Aboard the Star Forge, Revan faced off against Bastila once again. After defeating her, he succeeded in convincing her to return to the light side by drawing on the powerful bond of love that had formed between the two during the course of their quest. Finally, Revan again confronted his old friend and apprentice, Malak, in an epic lightsaber duel, while the Old Republic fleet, now no longer hindered by Bastila's Battle Meditation, continued its bombardment of the Star Forge. During their duel, Malak continually sucked the lifeforce from Jedi held in stasis to replenish his energies, but even this was not enough to defeat Revan. At last, Malak was cut down. Before his friend's death, Revan apologized for starting him down the dark path, even though Malak had continued down it willingly. Malak accepted his apology, realizing that he had no one to blame for his fate save himself. Then Darth Malak, Dark Lord of the Sith, died, his life ending in darkness and regret, and the Star Forge was destroyed.

A year after the defeat of Malak and the collapse of the Sith Empire, Revan left the Old Republic, having recovered his memories regarding the remnants of the ancient Sith Empire he had discovered as the Dark Lord. Hoping to put an end to the threat it posed before it could attack the weakened Old Republic, Revan bade farewell to the nine comrades who had accompanied him on his quest, knowing that none whom he loved could safely accompany him in the places he had to walk.

He entrusted Carth Onasi with the Old Republic's safety, and said goodbye to Bastila. "It would have been better," Kreia would later remark, "if he had made her understand. But she was always strong-willed, that one, and did not understand war as Revan did." Then Revan disappeared, leaving the Ebon Hawk with T3-M4 and HK-47 on the edge of Known Space. It is believed that the exile may have chosen to search out his former commander and assist him in his mission.

If Revan ever completed his self-appointed mission and returned to the Old Republic and his waiting friends is unknown.

Revan as Master Planner
One of the most interesting revelations in The Sith Lords is one many gamers have missed, concerning Revan himself. Whereas the first game implied that Revan's actions in the Mandalorian Wars caused Revan to fall to the dark side of the Force, The Sith Lords features characters that knew Revan before and after his fall.

These characters point out that Revan, during the Wars, discovered something outside the realm of the Old Republic: the original Sith Empire, believed to have collapsed millennia ago. In learning this, the characters say, Revan felt compelled to protect the galaxy from this threat. Under this revelation and others, Revan's actions become quite different than the rash, destructive goals of Darth Malak and other, later, Sith. These include:

Ignoring, militarilly, any planet with a strong industrial infrastructure: one that would be required to defend the galaxy against the unknown threat. Revan's plan was to leave the Old Republic's infrastructure intact, giving him a functional military and economy to work with once he had conquered the galaxy, rather than starting from scratch. Also, had he failed in conquering the galaxy, the end result would have remained: a stronger, more capable Republic.
Use of assassin droids, such as HK-47, to assassinate those who would have destablized local governments, planets, or entire sectors.
Focus on conversion, rather than murder, of Jedi. In joining the dark side (or at the very least, abandoning the constrictive Jedi teachings), these Dark Jedi would be stronger against the ancient Sith Empire.
Even Revan's fall to the dark side of the Force takes a considerable new angle with this new information. Darth Traya even goes so far as to stubbornly believe that Revan did not fall to the dark side: When Revan was faced with the power of the dark side on Malachor V, he came to realize that a Dark Lord of the Sith was the only one who could defeat the old Sith Empire. Embracing the dark side, Revan founded a new Sith Empire to defeat the old. To save the galaxy, he would conquer it. To become the galaxy's greatest hero, he would become its greatest villain.

In an ironic turn of events, Revan succeeded and failed at his task. Unexpectedly betrayed by Darth Malak, Revan's plans were quickly quashed by his brash and violent apprentice, who sought to destroy the Old Republic entirely. It was only The Force that kept Revan alive, being reborn with little existing memory of his earlier self. Using his slowly-returning memories, Revan began to accomplish his original tasks. His memories once again fully restored, Revan left Known Space to take the fight to the old Sith Empire.

It is unknown if Revan succeeded or failed at his task. This is assumed to be a key aspect of any new Knights of the Old Republic game. Some argue that Revan succeeded at his task - the next Sith to succeed was merely a corrupted Republic official. Others argue that Revan failed in his task, stating that regardless of "old Sith" or "new Sith," the Sith do triumph against the Republic - it merely takes them 4000 years.

Jedi Exile

Posted Image

The Exile was a Jedi Padawan, on par with most Jedi Knights of the time, who studied - and taught - at the Academy on Dantooine. Before he could begin his trials to become a Knight and take on his own apprentice, the Mandalorian Wars surged through the galaxy. The Exile, overwheled with compassion for the lives lost to the ravages of the Mandalorians on the Outer Rim, joined the Republican forces lead by Revan, the first Jedi Knight who had defied the High Jedi Council in order to meet the Mandalorians in battle; never being ordained a Jedi Knight, he left his prospective Padawan, Mical (the Disciple), without a master.

The Exile served as a General under Revan during the Mandalorian Wars. Overseeing the final, titanic battle at Malachor V, The Exile gave the order to activate the mass shadow generator. This generator crushed both the Republic soldiers and Mandalorians caught in the weapon's destructive sphere. The amount of death and destruction caused such a substantial 'wound' in the Force that the Exile found himself severed from the Force. The only Jedi under Revan able to turn away from the dark side after Malachor V, the Exile was also the only Jedi to willingly return to Coruscant, to face trial for his actions - and defend them.

Despite an impassioned plea, the Jedi Council decreed that because the Exile had followed Revan to war, he was to be cast out of the Jedi Order. In reality, the Council feared the 'wound' in the Force that surrounded the Exile. Some on the council felt that they were punishing the Exile not because of what he did, but because he was symbolic of the many Jedi that had fallen to the dark side over the course of history, and the only one the Council could avenge themselves on. These council members felt that the Exile was the perfect opportunity to examine why and how so many Jedi fall to the dark side. More conservative council members, however, felt no need to do more than exile the former Jedi.

Full details of the Exile's atravels in the Outer Rim are unknown, but it is known that Atris had orchestrated the Exile's return to known space; in order to attract the growing Sith threat, she leaked news of his return to the galaxy and, predictably, attracted the Sith's attention. However, the Ebon Hawk rescued him from an unappealing fate. With the help of the utility droid T3-M4, the Ebon Hawk was guided to the mining facility at Peragus II.

There he met with an old woman named Kreia, a mysterious Jedi Master (exiled by the Council because Revan was her apprentice) who would guide the Exile through his journey to find the missing Jedi Masters who sentenced him to exile. When the Exile wakes up and meets her, they find the facility to be completely abandoned, except for malfunctioning mining droids. While searching for a way off the station, the Exile finds Atton Rand, a man imprisoned within the brig . After Darth Sion and a force of Sith Asssassins arrive to kill the Exile (believing he is the last of the Jedi), the three escape with T3-M4 onboard the Ebon Hawk, traveling to Telos, finding it the only available destination in the Peragus navigational charts. While being pursued by the Sith in the asteroid field around Peragus, laser fire ignited the volatile fuel within the asteroids. This explosion destroyed both the facility and the entire asteroid belt, though the Ebon Hawk and the Sith were able to escape.

After arriving at the massive Citadel Station in orbit around Telos, the Ebon Hawk and T3-M4 were stolen and brought to the Telosian surface. Using alternative transportation to get down to the surface, the Exile's party was shot down by Czerka air-defense turrets. A Zabrak engineer named Bao-Dur, who designed the Mass Shadow Generator and served under the Exile at Malachor V, saw the crash and pulled the three unharmed from the wreckage. While on the surface, they learned that the Ebon Hawk had been taken to the old planetary aqueducts in the polar region of the planet. Stealing a shuttle from an abandoned military compound, they traveled to the aquaducts and found Jedi Master Atris there, a member of the Council that sentenced the Exile. Atris was attempting to recover lost Jedi teachings and had surrounded herself with several Echani sisters. These sisters were known as Handmaidens, who had vowed not to learn the ways of the Jedi. After speaking with Atris, the Exile and his party left with the Ebon Hawk and T3-M4, however, the last of the Handmaidens was sent to board the Ebon Hawk as a spy. Despite knowing this, and over Kreia's protests, the Exile allowed the Handmaiden to stay after she revealed herself on board the ship.

After leaving the academy, T3 revealed that he had managed to download Atris's database while being held, including a recording of the Exile's trial where the last five remaining Jedi Masters were hiding: Atris on Telos, Kavar on Onderon, Vrook on Dantooine, Zez-Kai Ell on Nar Shaddaa, and Lonna Vash on Korriban. The crew goes off to these worlds in search of the fugitive Jedi Masters in an attempt to unite them against the Sith and to find the answers as to why the Exile was sentenced as such.

Light side Ending

After locating and conversing with all of the remaining Jedi Masters, the Exile returns to Dantooine to find the rebuilt Jedi Training Acedemy. There the Jedi had formed a council in which they would decide his fate. Right before the Jedi exile him again, and strip him of the Force, Kreia storms into the meeting, saving him at the last moment by stripping the Force from the Jedi Masters- if not outright killing them. She also betrays the Exile by leaving him unconscious in the enclave, and lying to the Handmaiden by telling her that he is dead. Kreia asks the Handmaiden to take her to Atris on Telos and she does so. The Exile awakens and Atton tells him what happened. Kreia meets Atris and coerces her into revealing her dark side allegiance, before revealing her own. Kreia leaves the Handmaiden on Telos. The Handmaiden confronts her sisters, who attack her for betraying Atris. She defeats them all before confronting Atris, who defeats her. The Exile then arrives and is forced to fight Atris as well. He defeats her, and she tells him of Kreia's dark persona. He then leaves with the Handmaiden (who at this time reveals her name to be Brianna). Telos is then attacked by Darth Nihilius's fleet. The Exile, Mandalore, and Visas board Nihilius's ship, the Ravager, and destroy him and the ship, ending the conflict. The Exile then leaves for Malachor V to battle Darth Sion and Darth Traya. After Sion is defeated and dead, he faces Kreia, who has retaken her former identity - Darth Traya. Traya and the Exile do battle, and the Exile prevails. Before Traya finally becomes one with the Force, she gives the Exile information which will send him on a search for Darth Revan in the Unknown Regions.

(Note: The Light Side ending is the canonical one).

Darth Bandon-Like most of Darth Malak's followers, Bandon was once a student of the Jedi. But though the Force flowed through him, Bandon could never accept the Jedi teachings. Powerful emotions like anger and hate raged within him, and they fueled his strength. When the Sith rose to power, Bandon rejected his old Master and fled to the Sith Academy on Korriban.
There he embraced the dark side and the way of the Sith with every fiber of his being. His great strength in the Force, his natural cruelty and his absolute ruthlessness in his quest for power soon set him apart from his fellow students, and drew the calculating eye of Lord Malak himself.

In the tradition of their order, Malak sought a single pupil from among his many followers to become his chosen apprentice: one who could learn the terrible secrets of the Sith and use them to destroy the Jedi and the Republic.

Darth Bandon proved himself to be an excellent choice. Many Jedi fell beneath the blade of his lightsaber. Some in the Sith hierarchy wondered if Bandon would someday rise to challenge Malak for the mantle of Dark Lord, for that was the way of the Sith: the strong must rule, and when the apprentice surpasses the Master, the Master must fall.

Such ambitions never had time to develop into plots. Bandon was killed by agents of the Republic searching for the location of Darth Malak's secret source of power, the Star Forge.

Jolee Bindo-An eccentric former smuggler and skilled Jedi, Jolee Bindo chose to retreat from society and live out his days in seclusion and obscurity, four thousand years before the Galactic Civil War. Bindo cloaked himself in indifference to hide his sorrow. He appeared as a cantankerous old man who readily dismissed the wide world and its troubles with an impatient wave of his hand, but his care and wisdom still shone through the many layers he had draped around his heart.
His story remains unknown aside from rumors that he fought in the great war of Exar Kun -- in a time when Jedi turned against Jedi and the dark side threatened to swallow the galaxy. It is not known what happened that pushed Jolee to leave the Jedi order, to leave civilization itself and go into self-imposed exile in the deepest shadows of wild Kashyyyk.

Jolee remained tight-lipped and scoffed at any suggestion that he might be something more than what he appears: an old man. But his skills were apparent, and when Bastila Shan's mission to uncover the Star Forge caused Republic agents to cross paths with Jolee in the Kashyyyk shadowlands, he was willing to finally return to the galaxy at large. Jolee accompanied the quest for Darth Malak, traveling to distant worlds such as Manaan, where he uncovered elements of his forgotten past -- like his friend and fellow war hero Sunry, who was held captive for murder on the watery world.

Despite a series of rousing adventures among spirited youngsters, Jolee remained weary of the galaxy's endless, pointless struggles. He insisted that all he wanted was peace, but his eyes -- the eyes of a fighter, the eyes of a Jedi -- told a different story.

Juhani-Juhani, a Jedi Guardian of four thousand years ago, lived much of her life trying to quiet the conflict within. Like most Cathar who chose to join the Jedi Order, she was locked in a never-ending struggle to find a balance between her instincts and her training.
The feline Cathar species is known throughout the galaxy for their courage in battle, and for their fierce loyalty and their quick tempers. Such intense passions can make it difficult for one of this proud species to follow the way of the light.

Juhani devoted herself fully to the Jedi, determined to master both her volatile emotions and her ability in the Force. She strove to be a paragon of the Order; she swore to live her life completely by the Jedi Code. Because of this, she did not easily accept failure in herself or in others.

Such intensity worked against her, unfortunately. Her master, Quatra, underestimated Juhani's ferocious instincts. At the Jedi training compound on Dantooine, Juhani lashed out against her instructor and accidentally killed her. Shocked at what she had done, Juhani became a recluse, living in a secluded grove in the Dantooine plains.

Her despair created a disturbance in the Force, agitating nearby animals and casting a gloomy pall on that area of the Dantooine grasslands. A Jedi initiate found Juhani there, but the Cathar was at first not yet ready to come out from seclusion. She was still grappling with her own demanding standards.

Davik Kang-Since before the Republic, criminal empires have thrived. Xim the Despot held together worlds through tyranny. The Hutts defeated him and brought their own brand of oppression and injustice to the worlds they governed. Four thousand years ago, when the Republic ruled with much loftier ideals, there was still the stain of criminal syndicates controlling people's lives across entire sectors.
The Exchange was one of the most powerful criminal organizations that operated throughout much of the Outer Rim Territories in that time. The shadowy group was led by an even more mysterious entity called the Compeer, with a command structure that included individual crime lords controlling profitable worlds. The only way to be accepted into this elite group is to be nominated by several other crime lords. Controlling the world of Taris was Davik Kang. His organization specialized in smuggling contraband goods, dealing in slave trade and extortion.

According to rumor, Kang agreed to spare the life of a brilliant technician who owed him a large sum of credits in exchange for the construction of a powerful custom-made suit of armor. The suit provided Kang maximum protection, but was extremely light and flexible. The legend held that the armor was so remarkable, Davik decided to have the technician "eliminated" anyway, just to prevent any possibility of ever having to face anyone wearing a similarly designed suit.

Following a space battle between Republic and Sith forces over Taris, Republic agents were stranded on the quarantined world. A former bounty hunter associate of Kang, Canderous Ordo, helped these fugitives escape Taris by infiltrating Kang's compound and stealing his ship, the Ebon Hawk. Kang was killed trying to stop the fugitives.

Admiral Saul Karath-During the ancient Sith campaigns against the Jedi thousands of years ago, the corruption of Republic forces proved to be the most devastating weapon in the Sith arsenal. Highly placed Republic officials brought with them trained soldiers, advanced weaponry, and inside knowledge with each defection. After the Mandalorian Wars, Admiral Saul Karath, a pivotal figure in the victory over the Mandalorians, stunned his peers when he declared the Republic not worthy of his support. He transferred his allegiance to the Sith Lord Revan, taking with him a large number of troops and the Interdictor flagship he commanded, the Leviathan.
Karath was the first officer of significant rank to go over, and he set a dark precedent. Rather than face an enemy that knew their every tactic, several other officers followed his path.

Many that remained loyal to the Republic trained directly under the admiral -- such as the heroic pilot Carth Onasi. For Carth, the conflict became far more personal in nature. He saw Karath's defection as a personal blow that shook his ideals to the core. He swore vengeance, and would eventually find it when Karath was killed on the bridge of his own flagship during the Republic's hunt for the Star Forge.

Darth Malak-For thousands of years, the Sith and the Jedi have waged war, with control of the galaxy at stake. Though the Jedi Knights did not seek to rule, they served the Republic in their efforts to vanquish the Sith Lords. In the darkest reaches of the distant past, the Sith would strike in full force, seeking to exert their dark will upon a terrified public.
Four millennia before the Sith would eventually subvert the Galactic Republic into a New Order, the galaxy was still reeling from the last great Sith uprising. Licking its wounds from the Great Sith War, the Republic again found itself on the defensive as Mandalorian raiders attacked from the Outer Rim.

The beleaguered Jedi Knights fought valiantly to repulse the Mandalorian marauders. Foremost among the heroes of this era were the Jedi warriors Malak and Revan. Revan's clever military strategies proved successful time and again, while Malak gained a reputation as a headstrong warrior who would recklessly charge into danger. Malak's former Masters were well aware of this impetuousness during his days at the training academy on Dantooine. They were hesitant to unleash Malak onto the battlefields, but the strains of the Mandalorian Wars left them few options.

Turning the tide of the Mandalorian attacks, Malak and Revan pursued the fleeing forces into uncharted regions of space. All contact was lost between the Republic and the two Jedi warriors. In the unknown regions, something terrible happened. The two Jedi heroes succumbed to the dark side, and would return to the galaxy as Sith Lords -- Darth Revan as the mentor, and Darth Malak as the apprentice.

The Sith Lords had somehow amassed a huge military force, and with each world that they conquered, they added to their legions. Disturbingly, many Jedi Knights and Republic soldiers switched sides, joining forces with the growing Sith movement. The Republic stood on the verge of collapse from the repeated attacks of Darth Malak's forces.

Fueling the Sith conquest was the Star Forge. An ancient device of amazing Rakatan engineering, the Star Forge was an immense space-bound factory station that churned out an endless supply of vessels and combat materiel. Revan and Malak had found clues to its existence during their time in the Unknown Regions, and were able to uncover the Star Forge's location in orbit over an incredibly ancient world.

The Jedi Council, in a last ditch effort to stop Revan and Malak, engineered a trap for the Sith Lords. Though the snare neutralized Darth Revan, Malak escaped and took control of the Sith forces. Some claim that Malak fled the battle. Others maintain that he survived simply because he was stronger than Revan. Still others believe Malak turned on Revan, using the Jedi's attack as an opportunity to wrest control from his former Master's failing grip. Whatever the truth, Malak survived, and returned with a vengeance.

From the bridge of the massive cruiser Leviathan, Malak would order the razing of entire worlds. Planets such as Taris and Dantooine felt the might of the Sith Lord's wrath. Commanding Malak's fleet forces was Admiral Saul Karath, a former Republic officer. Malak took on an apprentice, Darth Bandon, to do his bidding.

Revan, a Jedi captive, was stripped of all memories of a Sith past, and was turned into an agent of the Republic. Jedi observers closely watched Revan as the "reformed" Sith traced the path blazed during the initial search for the Star Forge. In this manner, agents of the Republic were able to find the station and confront Malak.

This confrontation erupted into a massive battle as Republic fleet forces arrived to attack the Star Forge. Endless streams of ships poured forth from the Star Forge, striking against the amassed warships of the Republic. The Sith Lord had grotesquely adapted the Rakatan device to draw energy directly from chained Jedi captives. He replenished his life force from the captives by draining theirs. Malak was nearly unstoppable, but the Republic emerged from that epic conflict victorious, as the Star Forge was eventually destroyed.

Malak was a tall human who was horridly injured in a lightsaber duel. A swipe from a laser sword severed his lower jaw, and Malak was forced to wear a metallic jaw guard that hid his disfigurement from view. The guard also included a vocoder, through which Malak spoke with an eerie metallic tone.

Calo Nord-At first glance he seemed harmless enough. He was small in stature -- a quiet little man who moved with a careful, almost deliberate precision. Yet the twin blasters on his belt gave a hint as to the true nature beneath his disturbingly expressionless face. And among the criminals and scum inhabiting the Outer Rim four thousand years ago, no name was more feared than that of the galaxy's most notorious bounty hunter: Calo Nord
Bought as a slave while still a young boy, Calo began his life of bloodshed on his sixteenth birthday by butchering his owners -- or so the legend holds. His next victims were the ones who had sold him into a life of servitude, his own parents. It was inevitable such bloody vengeance would bring retribution, and a price was placed on the young man's head.

But Calo had a natural instinct for survival, and for killing. He toyed with the bounty hunters who came after him, learning all their tricks and techniques before dispatching them with ruthless efficiency. Eventually the attempts on his life stopped, though not before dozens had failed in their efforts to collect the small fortune resting on his head. Those responsible for placing the bounty on him were the next to feel Calo's wrath. No longer a target himself, Calo became one of the hunters. And with each bounty he collected, his reputation grew.

Calo knew no allegiance other than to hard credits or the thrill of the hunt. He worked for the Exchange on Taris, the Sith in the Outer Rim, and even the Republic in the Core. It was on Sith business that Nord finally met his match -- Republic agents hunting for the legendary StarForge were finally able to defeat the deadly bounty hunter.

Carth Onasi-When young Carth Onasi signed up to join the Galactic Republic military, he fully believed in the strength of the institution. A loyal soldier, skilled pilot and superior tactician, he operated with distinction in both small border skirmishes and in major engagements.
Though the events of the Mandalorian Wars forever cemented Carth's reputation as a hero, their aftermath dealt a fatal blow to Carth's idealism. In the Sith resurgence that targeted a weakened Republic, the evil Darth Malak sundered Carth's homeworld of Telos. Carth's young wife was killed, and Dustil, his son, was missing.

Compounding this tragedy was the betrayal that further fueled the Sith conquest. Some of the highest-ranking officers of the Republic were seduced by the Sith, including Carth's trusted mentor, Admiral Saul Karath.

Once, honor and loyalty drove Carth to fight the Sith. Vengeance and hatred threatened to replace these laudable attributes, as Carth made it his life's goal to bring Karath to justice.

Carth found himself unable to trust anyone, particular the inscrutable Jedi he was often teamed with in his missions. He still carried out his duty, escaping from the Endar Spire over Taris and freeing the captive Jedi Bastila Shan before that world was also destroyed by the Sith. He accompanied Bastila and a special Jedi initiate in their mission to uncover the mystery of the Star Forge. On this quest, Carth had his chance at revenge, killing Karath on the bridge of the Leviathan.

During the search for Darth Malak, Carth was a 38 standard years old. He was a handsome man with brown hair. He typically dressed in fatigues and flight jacket, and favored blaster weaponry. He most often piloted the Ebon Hawk during this mission.

Canderous Ordo-Canderous Ordo made his living as a mercenary four thousand years ago, selling his services to the highest bidder. Most often this turned out to be an underworld figure wanting to capitalize on his considerable skills as a combatant, tactician, and outright thug. If his criminal clients knew where he learned his trade, however, even they might have had second thoughts about hiring him.
Canderous was a Mandalorian, and as such, he was on the losing side of the Mandalorian Wars with the Republic. He was no foot soldier, however, and had an active hand in the planning and execution of many battles that did not go in the Republic's favor. There was a lot of blood on his hands, and he doubted that enough time has passed for people to view his actions as he does, with the impersonal eye of a career soldier. He was pragmatic enough to take no insult from the defeat of his people. It was just business, after all.

Canderous came to be employed by Davik Kang, a crime lord with influence throughout the undercity of Taris. The traitorous actions of Sith Lords Revan and Malak and the continued aggression of the Sith distracted the citizens of the Republic to the point where they were no longer concerned about the defeated Mandalorians. As such, Canderous went about his business mostly in peace.

A born warrior couldn't stay working as a smalltime enforcer for long. It was inevitable that a more interesting offer got Canderous' attention. Following the defeat of the Republic cruiser Endar Spire over Taris, the planet was placed under Sith blockade. Canderous, never one to be trapped, was eager to leave the planet. He found some Republic fugitives also looking to escape, and provided them with the means of slicing into Taris' computer network to retrieve the access codes necessary to leave the quarantined world.

As the Ebon Hawk blasted off from Taris filled with Republic fugitives, the Sith utterly razed the planet. Canderous stuck with the odd mix of escapees, knowing that more adventures lay in the stars, and that ultimately, a greater role lay ahead for the Mandalorian.

Bastila Shan-Like most Jedi of the ancient order, Bastila Shan was found to be Force-sensitive at a young age, and spirited away from her family to be raised within the order. Despite the stern discipline of a Jedi upbringing, Bastila grew to be a brash, impulsive young woman.
Shan was gifted in art of Jedi Battle Meditation, a rare ability usually only accessible to the most skilled and wizened Jedi Masters. Through sheer force of will, she could influence the course of massive battles. She could bolster the courage of one side of a battle, while draining the resolve of another. It is an exhausting feat, but Bastila proved extremely valuable in crucial engagements during Darth Malak's campaigns against the Republic.

Knowing how valuable she was to the order, the Jedi Council urged Bastila to be cautious, be she nonetheless devoted every fiber of her being towards defeating the Sith menace and proving herself to the Jedi.

Bastila was instrumental in the last great Republic riposte against Darth Malak and Darth Revan, splitting the pair and conquering one of the Sith Lords. The Jedi Council had learned sketchy details about the Sith plot involving the Star Forge, but needed more information in order to stop it. They crafted a devious and controversial plan into which Bastila Shan figured prominently.

The captive Revan underwent a memory wipe, and was given a new identity. This new persona was paired with Bastila Shan in the search for Darth Malak and the Star Forge. Bastila kept a wary eye on Revan, always alert at signs of the dark side. Such an awareness opened her to the dark side more than she intended. The quest for the Star Forge, which spanned worlds, kept Revan and Bastila working side-by-side, and thrust Bastila into difficult and challenging roles as a Jedi.

Bastila, Carth Onasi and the reformed Revan were captured by Darth Malak and held prisoner aboard his flagship, the Leviathan. With the help of their comrades from the Ebon Hawk, the trio escaped, but not before Revan found out the truth behind the Jedi Council's duplicity. Stunned, Revan grappled with the revelation, as Bastila heroically attacked Darth Malak to act as a distraction. Revan and Carth fled to the Hawk, blasting free of the Sith warship, but Bastila was once again imprisoned.

Malak tortured Bastila, corrupting her will and turning her to the dark side of the Force. The next time Revan encountered Bastila, she was a dark warrior filled with rage. Bastila urged Revan to turn to the dark side, and the decision made by Revan ultimately sealed the fate of Bastila, the Star Forge, and Darth Malak's scourge.

Mission Vao-Surviving in the Lower City of Taris was no easy task, particularly for a young Twi'lek girl on her own. But Mission Vao not only survived in the hard world of the swoop gangs, she throve. Four thousand years ago, the street smart Rutian Twi'lek became an authority on the hidden alleys, backstreets and secret entrances in the Lower City, and she was even known to explore the creature-infested sewers of the Undercity itself.
She wasn't always a street urchin. Mission Vao grew up with only her brother Griff as family, but that unscrupulous scoundrel abandoned her at a young age. Mission long blamed Lena, Griff's girlfriend, for luring him offworld and abandoning her. In truth, Griff was a freeloading leech that squandered Lena's credits in ill-considered get-rich-quick schemes. Lena finally left him, and Griff ended up on Tatooine, working for the Czerka Corporation.

On the Sith-controlled world of Taris, non-humans were frowned upon by the all-human cultural elite, and were driven into the lower levels of the city. There, Mission survived, though she made a number of enemies. Some, particularly the Black Vulkar swoop gang, sought to bring Mission's adventures to a permanent end. But despite the dangerous situations she constantly found herself in, this spirited young Twi'lek always managed to find a way out, and often with an incongruously sunny disposition. When her quick reflexes, quick thinking and even quicker mouth couldn't save her, she always had one last card to play -- her towering Wookiee companion, Zaalbar, whom she affectionately calls Big Z.

The odd pair were inseparable ever since Zaalbar arrived on Taris, and despite the obvious contrasts between them, their friendship benefited them both. Zaalbar knew he could rely on Mission to come up with a plan to make sure they had food in their bellies and a safe place to stay. And Mission knew that whatever trouble her schemes might get them into, Big Z would always be there to watch her back.

Just prior to Taris' destruction, Zaalbar fell afoul of a gang of Gamorrean raiders, and was held captive in the deep sewers of the Undercity. Desperate, Mission turned to resourceful escapees from a destroyed Republic cruiser to help her liberate her Wookiee friend. Proving to be an exceptional ally, Mission and Big Z accompanied the Republic heroes -- among them Bastila Shan and Carth Onasi -- in their quest to thwart Darth Malak's plan for galactic domination.

Zalabar-The city world of Taris was a strange place to find a Wookiee, but the mighty Zaalbar managed to create a life for himself there, far from the kilometer-high wroshyr trees of his homeworld. Zaalbar kept his past on Kashyyyk a secret from even his most loyal friends, since the memories of his old life were painful.
Four thousand years ago, during the time of epic battles between the Jedi and Sith, Kashyyyk had come under the heel of the Czerka Corporation. The amoral business titan enslaved the Wookiees, and violated their forests with corporate installations. This infiltration was made possible by a Wookiee accomplice, Zaalbar's brother Chuundar.

Chuundar sold out his people for a lofty position in the new Czerka-controlled Kashyyyk. He even betrayed his father, Freyyr, and turned people against him by declaring him a doddering, senile fool. Enraged, Zaalbar lashed out against Chuundar, and broke an ancient Wookiee code. Zaalbar used his climbing claws in combat. For such a violation Zaalbar was branded a "madclaw," and exiled from Kashyyyk.

Zaalbar eventually ended up on Taris, and for a time it seemed he was destined to end up as an enforcer for one of the many swoop gangs there. But a chance meeting with a young Twi'lek girl named Mission Vao saved him from a life of senseless violence. Mission recognized Zaalbar was more than a lumbering brute and the two quickly became the best of friends. Mission took to affectionately calling Zaalbar "Big Z."

The strange pair grew to be a familiar sight in Taris' Lower City, and whenever the irrepressible young Twi'lek got into trouble, her Wookiee companion was always close by to help get her out.

She more than returned the favor -- when Zaalbar was captured by Gamorrean slavers in the deep sewers of the Taris Undercity, Mission was able to free him with the help of newfound Republic fugitive friends. Zaalbar accompanied Mission as she joined the hunt for Darth Malak and his sinister Star Forge plot. This galaxy-spanning quest would eventually bring Zaalbar back to Kashyyyk, where he was able to face his dark past once and for all.

HK-47-A self-sentient killing machine, HK-47 was far more than an ordinary combat droid. Created four thousand years ago, he came equipped with a devastating arsenal of high-powered weaponry, a ruthless and single-minded pursuit of his termination targets, and a pre-programmed disregard for all organic life. This Hunter-Killer model is one of the most dangerous assassins in the galaxy.
And yet, he was also a protocol droid.

The incongruity did not go unnoticed, even by HK-47. For a time, his memory was partially wiped, and he could not piece together his history. He knew that he just wanted to blast a few "meatbags," but the droid wasn't sure exactly why he wanted to do that. Or how he came to regard organic life as "meatbags." Or why he was so well equipped to gleefully dish out violence.

Instead, HK-47 found himself in a droid shop in Anchorhead, part of the Ithorian Yuka Laka's inventory of goods. The HK model was rumored to have been created by Czerka Corporation to eliminate the heads of rival companies. Units such as these were quite capable of laying waste to an entire building in an effort to dispose of a single target. This wanton carnage, combined with the tendency of the droid's previous owners to come to rather gruesome ends, has led most civilized planets to issue explicit bans on all HK-model assassin droids.

But there was more to HK-47 than that. In truth, HK-47 belonged to Darth Revan, Dark Lord of the Sith. Revan gave HK-47 the programming necessary to make the droid fluent in the difficult language of Tatooine's Sand People. It was HK-47 that helped Revan locate the ancient Star Forge map on Tatooine. To cover these tracks, Revan wiped the droid's memory of those events; ironically, the Sith Lord's memories would be wiped too.

HK-47 would help Revan again once the droid was reawakened. The droid had a strong sense of loyalty. He would obey his master to the letter of the instruction, even if the Revan wanted to tinker around in his chest and try to unlock some of the droid's hidden memories and capabilities.

T3-M4-Utility droids of all makes and models have been a common sight throughout the galaxy for millennia. The versatility of these handy little droids, combined with their reliable programming and affordability, has made them popular for everything from light janitorial duties to complex mechanical repairs and maintenance.
Among the premier utility droids available four thousand years ago were those in the T3 series. Though more expensive than most standard models, T3 droids contained the latest in advanced circuitry and programming, and were easily fitted with a variety of customized upgrades.

Crafted on Taris, T3-M4 was an early prototype of a late-generation model in this prestigious line. Janice Nall, a droid proprietor on Taris, customized the droid to serve as a personal security unit for an anonymous buyer -- Davik Kang, the local crime lord for the Exchange.

Along with the standard functionality, T3-M4 was equipped with light armor plating and upgradeable weapon functionality. Its programming was adjusted so that the droid could readily attack sentients. It had formidable fighting abilities coupled with its innate computer slicing and code breaking skills, all contained within an appealing, innocuous shell. T3-M4 spoke in a trilling, information-dense droid language.

Canderous Ordo, a Mandalorian mercenary operating on Taris, was to take delivery of the droid for Kang, but secretly cheated the crime lord. Instead, he sent others on an errand to purchase the droid on his behalf, and used T3-M4 to slice into the Taris computer network, obtaining access codes allowing Canderous to leave the blockaded planet.

T3-M4 accompanied Ordo along with Carth Onasi, Bastila Shan and other Republic luminaries during the Star Forge crisis, four thousand years before the Battle of Yavin.

Darth Sion-His body has been torn and knitted back together into a patchwork of mutilated flesh. His skeleton has been shattered and meticulously rebuilt. Darth Sion is a Sith Lord in eternal pain, his broken body held together by sheer force of will. Only his hatred and the power of the dark side keep him alive.
Sion is exceedingly difficult to kill-his mastery over his own battered body has lent him supernatural vitality, and his enduring agony has given him a threshold for pain and bodily harm far beyond that of a normal human. Or a Jedi.
Sion leads a sect of Sith assassins sent to wipe out the Jedi Order; his path and the player's will inevitably cross. Like most of the Sith, he is cold, calculating and brutal, delighting in the pain and suffering he inflicts.

Atton Rand-Disaster follows Atton Rand wherever he goes. While his primary talent is cheating death just long enough to stumble into the next crisis, Rand is also a skilled pilot, mechanic, gambler and liar. He thinks of self-preservation before all else; barring that, his most pressing concern is finding the next cantina with a Pazaak game. Initially imprisoned on Peragus, he is one of the first companions the player encounters.
Rand is a solid fighter. He possesses a wide range of armor and weapon proficiencies and non-combat skills, while his preservation instinct actually makes him stronger the more dire the situation becomes. So long as another party member is standing, Rand cannot be knocked down, and he will stave off unconsciousness and keep fighting if he has party support. This survival instinct also makes Rand very difficult to stun, paralyze or poison.

Bao-Dur-When the Mandalorian Wars began, the Sith forces struck the Outer Rim Iridonian colonies with a vengeance. As a result, many Iridonians were the first to join the Republic's war effort. One of them was a gifted young mechanic named Bao Dur, eager to lend his technical expertise to the cause. During his years of wartime service, he was instrumental in producing new weapons, shields and other technology for use in battle against the Mandalorians. When the wars ended, Bao Dur drifted, scarred by the countless atrocities he had witnessed. He found purpose again assisting the Outer Rim rebuilding effort.
A skilled mechanic and architect, Bao Dur is able to build or repair almost anything, even a mechanical replacement for his own arm, lost near the end of the Wars. This mechanized appendage is incredibly strong, making him a formidable opponent in a fight. It also has the power to destroy force fields and shields, rendering enemies vulnerable to conventional attacks.

The disciple-The disappearance of the Jedi drove many explorers to search for them and attempt to discover their fate. One such seeker is a lone Disciple working for the Republic. He has traversed the galaxy in search of Jedi and any trace of their teachings, much of which were lost when Saul Karath bombed Dantooine and turned the planet's skies to ash.
Why the Disciple seeks the Jedi so fervently, or what he hopes to learn from their ancient teachings is not known. While he shares the distrust much of the galaxy feels for the Order in the wake of the Jedi Civil War, he is nevertheless drawn to them, and is acutely aware that their skill is needed if the Republic is to be salvaged from destruction.
The Disciple is a skilled healer. In addition to making medpacs and other healing items, he functions as a portable medical workbench, capable of breaking down items into their chemical components so that more valuable items may be made

Mandalore-Since time immemorial, the Mandalorian clans were built on strict codes of honor and tradition. The leader of all clans was known as Mandalore. When a Mandalore fell, another would be chosen to succeed him.
Many years have passed since Darth Revan defeated the last Mandalore; none was chosen to take his place. Without a leader, the clans scattered to the far corners of the galaxy, finding work as mercenaries, raiders or worse. Now a new Mandalore has assumed rule, and rumor tells of a battle-hardened warrior who is reuniting the clans.

Echani Handmaiden-The mysterious Echani Handmaidens, 5 sisters, have faithfully served the Jedi Order for years, acting as scouts, soldiers and missionaries. Vowing not to learn the Jedi way after the destruction wrought by the Jedi Civil War, they have maintained a galaxy-wide vigil, watching for re-emergent Sith or fallen Jedi. However, they too have vanished, their fate unknown.
The Echani pride themselves on physical combat. Well-versed in hand-to-hand and melee weapon techniques, they are lethal fighters, able to shrug off damage with deft blocks or by anticipating and evading their opponents' strikes. The Echani believe that a person's true nature is only revealed through combat; thus, their highly stylized, ritualistic fighting is a kind of dialogue between adversaries, testing their enemies' spirit and resolve. It is said that the greatest Echani warriors can predict the outcome of a conflict
