More Deadlifting (various) « Thread started on: Jun 2nd, 2005, 12:16pm » -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- LlamaPower Quick question folks - think I've found the MAIN problem with my deadlifts, the reason that they suck..... When you are at the bothomo dancing queen boi position, about to start a deadlift, are your head and shoulders forward of the bar? I've just been looking at some deadlift pictures and it seems that most people's head and shoulders are, mine are not. Is this one of the causes of my problems? Or are the pictures misleading? http://www.btinternet.com/~siggyllama/ LlamaPower These guys all seem to have thier head / shoulders further forward than me. http://www.btinternet.com/~siggyllama/ Viking power Ideally col you want your shoulders level if not behind the bar a little on deadlifts, Forward of the bar on cleans LlamaPower So shoulders above the bar, head infront? FUCK sake! I've been FUCKing my dealdifts right up. Even my head has been back behind the bar! I need to get my shoulders over the bar. Tom always said that it was probably my technique holding me back - looks like he was right. http://www.btinternet.com/~siggyllama/ Viking power Your head as been behind the bar! FUCK col how did you get in that position Thomas Lenford Holy crap, Colin! I actually do clean deadlifts, so my shoulders and head are both a little in front of the bar, but even as a normal powerlifting deadlift, the shoulders should be straight above it and the head ALWAYS in front of it. I'd say that, yeah, we found a bit of a problem, Houston. - monkey scrotum LlamaPower When I take my grip my head is over the bar, but then I sort of look up and sit back a bit before I start pulling, so I recon I'm actually pulling back a bit as well as up. Now it all makes sense, why my grip is awkward and everything. http://www.btinternet.com/~siggyllama/ LlamaPower Just been out to the garage and done a quick deadlift. No warmup, no belt, no fuss. Same weight as earlier, but this time I made sure my feet were in the new slightly wider position I found earlier, and also that my shoulders were directly above the bar at the start position. The bar flew up, felt alot more comfortable. Looks like I'm in business. http://www.btinternet.com/~siggyllama/ McLifter Colin, of the three pictures you put in your post the one showing the best form is the middle one. Yes, even though the photo is from the front and he is using straps for the weight. On the other two pictures the men are tall and have long levers. They are lifting the bar in the best mechanical position for their body types. That is, they are basically stiff leg deadlifting the bar up. Now I've seen many gentlemen built this way pull a helluva lot of weight. That doesn't mean it is the best way for you to pull. Ideally you want to keep your legs in the game for as long as possible. That means that you drive hard out of the hole and keep your butt down. Your arms are just hooks (visualize them as such). Your head can be slightly up with your eyes focused on something just above where they would be when you are standing up. The shoulders should be slightly behind the bar and in general the bar should stay as close to your body as possible. Essentially scraping your shins, clearing the knees and brushing the thighs without resting on them to aide the finish of the pull. Find some more pictures of Deadlifters with a decent form that would match your body type. Check out some meet videos if you can find some. You will pull BIG with the way you are training. Brock. "Neoprene Boy" Thomas Lenford And once again, we have a forum member prove that getting your head out of your ass improves progress Just teasing, Colin. I think you'll find your life is a lot easier deadlifting when you aren't pulling back so hard your shins are breaking - monkey scrotum Colin whats your e-mail I've got a mpeg of me deadlifting you may find it useful Mike LlamaPower That really would be useful, thanks Mike. Siggyllama@btopenworld.com http://www.btinternet.com/~siggyllama/ Mike The Silverback Colin you have mail sent you 2 avi's hopefully it won't take long to down load. You will need QuikTime to view them. Mike gay poo pushing shit eater aka MaxPower The Bavarian Beast I was just thinking about this. You must not have been able to use much back strength to deadlift in a possition like that. It would have to be almost all leg drive. Thomas Lenford Kilted Freak Anyone want to bet on Colin pulling 20kg more when he gets this right? - monkey scrotum LlamaPower Trev - that is exactly right, I was almost squatting the weight up. monkey scrotum - 220kg By Chrsitmas is the goal. gay poo pushing shit eater aka MaxPower The Bavarian Beast Another deadlifting question I didn't want to hi-jack Colin's thread. I remember someone mentioning and also noticed a couple times that when Ahola deadlifts he rolls the weight forward then back to himself just before pulling. Is this to get the weight moving before pulling so its not so much a "dead" weight lift? Thomas Lenford Kilted Freak I can't see it having any positive effect for breaking the thing off the floor. It's not like any component of the movement would be vertical. I've seen some o-lifters do the same thing. And it's purely for setting it closer to your body before the initial pull. And I think a lot of it is psychological. Some guys just get into the habit. It's still dead weight - monkey scrotum cock holster McJock I always found it easier to take my grip on the bar with it further out, then roll it into my legs- i would still set up after doing that, so no chance of a transfer of energy, which would be minimal at best anyway. homo shit eating power I do the same thing also. I roll the weight into me; Not sure why but i find I struggle more if i don't do the roll first. McLifter I too roll the weight. Believe it or not it seems to help getting things moving. Keep in mind that you need to time it so you start your pull when it is touching your shins. But it is a habit and seems to work. McLifter "Neoprene Boy" Mike The Silverback I disagree, I've seen O lifter get perfectly setup the roll the weightout and back and blow the lift cause the initial pull is now out of position. It may not be as critical to a deadlift but, however why spend all that time and effort getting setup then change everything by moving the weight around. Initial setup is everything. If its out of position at the start its going to make the whole lift tougher. The top lifter in the world get the setup perfect then lift. Mike |
