Skip the 24 intro today. Last night wasn't so hot. I was lifting OK and then I noticed I was getting a headache. By the time I finished my cleans it was a splitting headache, and I had no pain reliever on me at all. Didn't understand why I got it either. I wasn't dehydrated, I wasn't suffering for lack of caffeine (nor did I have too much), and I didn't feel tense, but the only thing I could think of was tension headache. It pretty much put the kibosh on my workout because any strong contraction of my Tarps made my head scream in pain and made me see spots. But, I got through most of the workout, and it was a light workout anyway, so it really wasn't much of a loss. Power Snatch + Overhead Squat: 45 x 2+2 55 x 2+2 65 x 1+2 70 x 1+2 70 x 1+2 Squat Clean from below the knee: 70 x 3 80 x 3 90 x 2 100 x 2 Called it there. Did some stretching and drank more water. A couple Motrin later (bummed some when a friend came to the gym) and I was on my way to no pain, though it took an hour to fully subside. Some good news- Coach Yoda is giving me some old York bumpers, the ones that are mostly metal with the rubber outer rim. Now I have a set of 20kg plates to go with the 15's I had. I'll be getting a set of 25's and another set of 15's. *And* I am buying an Eleiko bar off of a training partner who can't do Oly lifts until he gets his knees operated on for a measely $350. That'll stay at Iron Sport with my Eleiko 10's, though. I'm not going to use those old York plates on that nice of a bar. I have an old whooped-on York power bar to use at home. Still, I am pretty psyched that I am on my way to a good home setup, the only thing I lack is a place to put everything. My basement doesn't have a high enough ceiling or a level floor. I don't have a garage either. My front porch is great for O-lifting- a concrete slab that juts out 8 feet from my wall and is as long as the front of the house. Wonder if my landlord will mind a squat rack and a set of jerk boxes on the porch? Plus it would (literally) be a drag lugging the weights in and out of the house. |

The following takes place between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Thursday, March 16, 2006. Actually, it didn't even take that long. No headaches tonight. I am now the proud owner of an Eleiko training bar. Bought it at a fire sale price from a friend who can't lift for a while and who needed money. My York bumper set is also complete, as I obtained the 25's yesterday as well. So, now I have no excuse for ever missing a training session. Dammit. Anyway, I spent a little more time warming up and stretching. Squat Snatch from below the knee: 45 x 3 55 x 3 65 x 2 70 x 2 70 x miss 70 x 2 Pretty light and basic, snappy too. Think I am going to test the snatch this weekend again. I'll be 2 weeks out from the meet. Maybe shoot for 95 and if I make that, 100. Front Squat: 60 x 3 100 x 3 120 x 3 140 x 2 160 x 2 180 x 1 for a PR!!! Man that felt- good! I don't mean just making the lift, I mean I barely felt it except at my sticking point. I was so surprised that I didn't even think to try a second rep. I thought it would be much more of a fight since my double with 160 felt a little tough. Well, that will be my next goal- 180 double, 190 single. Jerks from the rack: hold split position 3 seconds 65 x 3 85 x 3 95 x 2 105 x 2 105 x 2 Not bad at all. Better than previous weeks. I am more conscious of foot positioning which helps. There were only a couple where I was off-balance but not enough to lose the jerk. And I also made sure I held that split position. Have a C&J test this weekend- can I break the PR of 130 I just set last Saturday? I'm doing to do my damnest. Shooting for 135 and if I make that, 140. But- *if*- and that's just *if*- I don't make the PR's I set for myself, I can't be too disappointed. I've made a lot of progress in the last two months. Hell, two months ago I wouldn't even be thinking of attempting these weights. |

Thanks, guys. Kept rolling right along today... The following takes place between 12:00 PM and 1:30 PM on Saturday, March 18, 2006. Two weeks out from the East Coast Classic, and today is developmental day. What the hell, one last stab at PR-dom before I settle into technique and maintenance mode. I was feeling chipper today- no lingering pain or fatigue, energy levels high. I made sure I got in a good stretch and warmup before I started working up to my opening snatch. The warmups were as follows: bar x 3 40 x 3 50 x 2 60 x 2 70 x 2 75 x 1 Spaced them fairly well, and as the clock struck 12, I opened with a conservative 80 kilos. Nailed it, no sweat. Decided to make a leap to 90 kilos for my second attempt, and I smoked that too. Now the choice was, do I go for a safer bet on 95 kg or take a stab at 100? I decided to go to 95 kg, and I succeeded. Balance was something I had to fight for just a little, but the pull was strong and standing once the weight was secured was no problem. 95kg, new snatch PR. That was something I could take home and be happy with- for now. I rested about 15 minutes and then went into the warmup stage for the clean & jerk. Warmups were 50 x 2+2 (one power clean/power jerk, one full clean/split jerk) 60 x 2+2 (same as above) 70 x 2+2 (same as above) 80 x 2+2 (same as above) 90 x 1+1 (full/split) 100 x 1+1 (full/power) 110 x 1+1 (full/split) Now I was ready. Loaded the bar to 120 kilos. Not my best clean, but a solid jerk and I was on the board. I jumped ahead to 130 kilos, and this is where the wall was. I lost my grip on the bar on the second pull and landed flat on my ass. OK... One more try, and I got a high pull but nothing else was there. I won't lie and say I wasn't mad at myself- I was. I could tell myself all the reasons why I may have missed- fatigue, maxing out 2 weeks in a row, recovering from my 180 fsq two days ago- but that does no good. It's like I forgot how to clean the barbell. Everything just went wrong. Well, I totaled 215kg, which is only 2kg below my best total. But I wasn't giving up yet. I banged out a few more attempts for pride's sake. 110 x 1+1 115 x 1+1 120 x miss x 3 The misses were all on the cleans and it was entirely due to fatigue. My coach even said I should stop after the second miss, but I disagreed and went for a third attempt anyway. I had to be sure. I don't know why, but as I said to him later on, I didn't drive an hour and fifteen minutes here to stop once the going got tough. Food was a welcome respite from the stresses of the day, and after another hour or so of rest I was ready to begin my second session. The following takes place between 3:00 PM and 4:30 PM on Saturday, March 18, 2006. Went right into back squats: 70 x 5 120 x 4 150 x 3 170 x 2 200 x 2 210 x 1 for a raw PR!! Oh yeah. Nothing feels as good as hitting a squat PR. Jump Squats: 70 x 3 80 x 3 90 x 3 Got some serious air on these. Push Press/Split Jerk: 70 x 2+2 80 x 2+2 90 x 2+2 100 x 1+1 100 x 1+1 100 x 1+1 Some of these jerks and presses were lacking leg drive, but then again, after all I've done with my legs recently, that was understandable. When I look back at the last week, I have nothing to be upset about. Sure, I was disappointed that I didn't get 130 again on the C&J, but I just hit it last week. I've had 4 PR's in the last week. Who would complain about that? Trust me, I won't be losing any sleep tonight. |

That's a nice snatch PR. For me the number to shoot for in the snatch was always 100kg (I never made it, but whatever) 95kg is sweet, sweet candy. |

It's my hope to hit it at my meet, and if the gods are smiling, perhaps surpass it with 105. I had the strength Saturday. I don't know what it was, I can't really put my finger on it, but I didn't struggle at all with my snatches. I hope I can recreate that in two weeks when the results will really count. |

The following takes place between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Tuesday, March 21, 2006. I can't wait until Iron Sport gets that second platform. It's on order, but whomever is making it is sure taking their sweet time with it. Gimme some plywood and that IronMind article and I'll have one made in six hours. The reason I kvetch about this is because I had three exercises to do tonight, and relatively low volume, and there was just so much traffic on the platform and so many people to share the bars and bumpers with that it took me the whole 2 hours. I had hoped to be in and out in about 90 minutes, and when you see what I actually did, you will probably say, hey, that's a generous time frame for such a workout. Anyway... Warmed up with some surg snatches, bar x 3, bar x 3, and then a few power snatches at 40kg. Power Snatch/Overhead Squat: 45 x 2+2 55 x 2+2 65 x 1+1 70 x 1+1 75 x 1+1 80 x 1+1 80 x miss. 80 x 1+1 I kid you not, this took 45 minutes and my snatches at the end weren't that good because I was actually cooling off between sets. Squat Clean from below the knee: 50 x 3 70 x 3 80 x 3 90 x 2 100 x 2 110 x 1 110 x 1 The crowd started to thin a little here. It was easier going. Clean Pulls: 115 x 3 130 x 3 150 x 2 150 x 2 And that's it. Shouldn't have taken nearly as long as it did. And for once, it wasn't me bullshitting ot yakking it up, it was just having to wait 3-4 and sometimes 5 minutes in between each snatch set. It was excruciating. On a better note, one of the newer lifters there is a guy named Brandon. He's a former college football player, a runningback with the largest hamstrings I've ever seen. He's very explosive and does some of the sickest plyometric exercises I've ever seen in person. He is just now learning the Oly lifts and he's doing very well- he power snatched 90kg tonight in running sneakers and he's only been at this a month or so. We're going to help each other out. Brandon wants my input on the classic lifts, and my caoch (Yoda) has entrusted me to do this when he can't be there to instruct. In return, Brandon is going to introduce me to plyometrics. Baby steps at first. My goals with this are- (1) to supplement power, strength, and GPP, (2) to apply that power to the classic lifts, and (3) develop a program I can do at home on my off days, preferrably in the morning before work. I told Brandon this, as well as my concerns about some exercises and how hard they may be on my joints. The idea is to start off slowly and gradually increase while, hopefully, at the same time, drop some useless weight. This starts Thursday. |

Will do, Sean. The following takes place between 6:00 PM and 8:00 PM on Thursday, March 23, 2006. I knew it was going to be one of those days. Sometimes you just wake up and you know it's going to happen. My day began when I fell out of bed too late to make breakfast, so I had to settle for breakfast on the go. At least I got to work on time. However, I didn't feel rushed like I normally do under these circumstances, I had everything under control. It just seemed like things were falling into place and that rarely happens for me. Shit, some days just pouring a glass of milk turns into an epic battle- I'll drop the cap, bend over to pick it up, on the way back up, whack my head on an open cupboard, and as I move, I'll either knock the glass or the container of milk over and spill it- and these fights will happen every day with every task I try to do no matter how mundane. But not today. Today was just... like I anticipated every curve before it happened. I took that into my training and it paid off in stars. Rather than try to work in on the platforms, I waited. When someone finished using my bar, I nabbed it and just began snatching on the floor. In fact, the floor is more solid of a surface because underneath the mat is concrete, whereas the platform at Iron Sport we have now is a little broken in, so you get some slight flex in the wood. I took my time warming up, going through lots of stretches and rotations, culminating in shrug snatches, bar x 3, bar x 3. Then, relaxed, stretched out, and eager to begin, I waged war. Squat Snatch, from floor: 40 x 3 50 x 3 60 x 2 70 x 2 80 x 1 90 x 1 95 x 1, PR tie! 100 x miss, but just, and I mean just barely. 100 x 1 for a rock-solid PR!!!! The miss was due to two factors- one, I had never attempted the weight and thus, didn't have the right amount of force in mind when I went to accelerate, and two, I rushed the second pull and left it slightly out front. But, I was under it and I knew I could get it. So, I rested a couple minutes and then approached the bar again. It was one of those moments- all the action in the gym stopped. All eyes were on me. There was no pressure, though, because if I didn't get this tonight I'd get it at my upcoming meet. As I hooked onto the bar I realized just how relaxed I was and allowed myself a wistful smile. Though I was aware of voices offering encouragement, I was definitely in my own little world. I got my breath, got set, and squeezed off the floor. This time I didn't rush the second pull, I scooped it in and BAM! the bar flipped up and I went back on my heels. My own little world came to an abrupt halt when I realized that I was in a full squat with the weight locked overhead with zero wavering. All I had to do was stand up. And, I did. I allowed myself a "woo!" and a few moments to savor this milestone, a victory I have been working towards for a long time. And, I think it was awesome that my many friends and fellow lifters at Iron Sport stopped and encouraged me and cheered me on. Moments like that make every missed attempt, every bad workout, every setback worth the fight it took to get through them. And, of course, it's moments like this I will need to reflect on when things do get rough, when I hit plateaus, or just have a hard time getting through the process of pouring a glass of milk. Still, I had a workout to do, so... Clean & Jerk: 70 x 2+2 70 x 1+1 80 x 2+2 90 x 1+1 100 x 1+1 110 x 1+1 Simple and quick. Didn't want to test this too. I'm done testing lifts until the meet. After these I sat down, scarfed a banana, and moved on. Front Squats: 60 x 5 100 x 4 120 x 3 140 x 2 160 x 2 Powerful- had more in me, but again, I felt that if I got greedy, it would make recovering more difficult. Abs, 60 reps- 2 x 20 floor crunches w/alternating legs and 2 x 10 lying trunk twists. I've been slacking off a little on the ab work- not much, but last few sessions, time to nip bad habits in the bud. Spend 10 minutes dislocating, doing external rotations, and getting some really good stretches in before I left, and I noticed how not-as-sore I was when I got out of my car after the trip home. So... yeah. These days don't come by very often, but I am sure grateful when they do. Now it's just cruise control until the contest. Stay the course, don't try and be a hero in the training hall, eat right and sleep well. I think I can do that. |

Thanks, guys... this is just the beginning. Now I really have my work cut out for me. And I am grateful for every ounce of support and encouragement I've gotten here over the last three years. In fact, looking at my old training logs that I had written down, yesterday was the third anniversary of my foray into weight training. Can't think of a better way to mark that date. Saturday's training- Session 1. Warmed up, felt pretty good. Snatch: 40 x 3 50 x 3 60 x 2 70 x 2 80 x 1 85 x 1 85 x 1 Clean & Jerk: 60 x 2+2 80 x 2+2 90 x 1+1 100 x 1+1 105 x 1+1 110 x 1+1 110 x 1+1 RDL: 115 x 5 130 x 4 150 x 3 150 x 3 End session one. Got a nosebleed during the RDL's. Odd, too, as it was between the last two sets. Usually when I pop it's in mid-lift. Jerks felt weak as hell, no snap or drive, splits were shallow and shaky. I brought this to the attention of Leo who mentioned that perhaps all the focus on the snatch has caused my shoulders to be overtrained. This week going into the contest is light with low volume, so I'll recover by Saturday, and next cycle, we're going to address the jerk situation. Session 2: Didn't need much warmup, as I spent the break helping to clean the gym. After eating and a half hour of straight up rest, I was back to work. Snatch Balance: bar x 5 40 x 3 50 x 3 60 x 2 70 x 2 80 x 2 85 x 1 85 x miss Squat Clean from below knee: 60 x 3 80 x 3 90 x 2 100 x 2 105 x 1 110 x 1 These were better than the cleans in the first session. BTN Split Jerk: 60 x 3 70 x 3 80 x 2 90 x 2 100 x 1 105 x 1 110 x 1 Again, shaky, but not as bad as the others. Back Squat: 90 x 5 130 x 4 160 x 3 180 x didn't even try. I was so tired, I picked it up, stepped out, and felt like I was going to die, so I reracked it and called it a day. No excuses, just completely spent. All in all, though, not a bad month. +5kg on the clean & jerk and +7kg on the snatch, as well as PR front squats and back squats. 5 days 'till the contest. |

Light day today. Squat Snatch from floor: 40 x 3 50 x 3 65 x 2 80 x 1 80 x 1 80 x 1 Not bad... I was a little concerned about 15kg jumps but I didn't have any issues. Clean & Jerk: 65 x 2+2 85 x 1+1 97 x 1+1 105 x 1+1 105 x 1+1 105 x 1+1 These were OK. On one or two jerks I felt a little off but for the most part they were much better than last week's efforts. Clean Pulls: 120 x 2 130 x 2 135 x 2 Nice. The 135 set felt strong- I think I could clean this if I were facing it on the bar. Back Squat: 60 x 5 105 x 3 135 x 2 170 x 1 170 x 1 Gravy. I had some spring in my squats, even with the last two. A marked difference from Saturday, where taking 180 off the rack felt like a death sentence. One more session on Thursday, a little lighter than this, and then- Judgment Day. |

Meet Report, Saturday April 1, 2006- East Coast Classic, Moorestown, NJ. Game day. Hard to believe that it was here already. Contests always seem distant, even if they're just a couple weeks out. It seemed surreal to me, walking into the training hall and seeing dozens of new faces, young and old, and hearing the weights hit the platform from the gymnasium above while seeing the lifts on a small television monitor. Then again, every contest I've done seems this way, so I shouldn't be surprised. Or nervous. But I was. It was a combination of excitement and fear. So much to me, at this point, was unknown. Guess it's a good thing that I learn fast. I arrived early, but not too early. Yoda said that I should arrive no earlier than an hour before weigh-ins, and that's what I did. I watched, I waited, then I weighed in. 158.95 kilos. A little heavy, though I didn't strip to all the way to my skivvies (which I found out later, I kind of have to according to USAW rules, so, I pity the poor fool next time that has to see me close to nekked just so I can shave a kilo off my weight). This time, it didn't matter, but the reasoning is sound- if there had been another lifter close to my BW I'd want to weigh as little as possible. So, I'll have to remember that next time. After weigh-ins I ate, then got dressed and began my dynamic warmups and stretches. I found out that the one person I lift with in my class who is close to me in the lifts had injured his back and had withdrawn from competition, so there were only two supers- myself and Mike McKenna. Since he has a lot more experience under his belt, that meant I was essentially competing against myself. So be it. Would have been nice to have Gary there, though. He has a 5-kilo edge on me in the snatch, but I have a 10-kg edge on the clean & jerk, and it would have been a great battle. Before I knew it, I was warming up. This happened because of my own inexperience- I should have started earlier rather than wait for Leo to come down and tell me what to do (but, in all honestly, that's what he told me). So, with about 15 minutes on the clock, I had to start jamming. I was first up, and following myself every time. They ran the 105 and the 105+ classes together with a rising bar. Frazzled as I was, I still made out OK. Took warmups at 50, 70, 80, and 87 kg. Original posted opener was 90, but Leo did some clock manipulation by changing the weight incrementally to give me a little more time following my last warmup. With 93 kilos on the bar I took my first attempt. Success! It was not my best snatch- I rushed the second pull a little, but it was a good lift. The 30 second buzzer startled me right as I was in mid-pull. Again, we put the loaders through hell and changed the weight a couple times for the second attempt, but we settled on 98 kg. This time, I waited for the buzzer to go before I began the lift. 98 kilos got smoked. It was a much stronger lift than my opener, and I returned to Leo, excited for my next attempt. Again, we inched the weight up to give me more time, and settled at 103 kg. Sadly, this attempt was not successful, I left it out front. It was close, though- if I had another chance I would have got it, but 103 was 3 kilos over my all-around best and I just wasn't familiar with the weight. 98 kilos in the snatch is a meet PR (+11kg) and is only 2kg off my all-time best. So I was very satisfied with that. In the clean & jerk, again, same situation. I was following myself on every attempt. I did have more time to warm up, though, and I paced myself strictly according to a clock- 3 minutes between each warmup. 70 x 2+2, 80 x 1+1, 90 x 1+1, 100 x 1+1, 117 x 1+1. Opener was originally set at 120 kg, but of course, we changed it. I took 123 as my first and made a nice lift. Again, more clock play, and I took 128 kg on my second. This was a better clean, but a shakier jerk. I actually got one red on the jerk, but 2 out of 3 whites = Good lift. This time, Leo was a little more conservative about my last attempt, and we settled on 131 kg. This changed the order, because someone else had a 130 kg opener, so I had a little more breathing room. With 131 on the bar, I approached. I cleaned the weight- a PR, by the way, and stood up. When you hit a PR clean you feel as big as a mountain, and that is how I felt. As I got my breath I thought, power jerk, because I've always been more stable with those, but I relented since I had only done splits today. So, I dipped and drove, and locked it nice, but then, horror. I split deeper than I usually did, and my back foot was extended further back than usual. The weight was a little forward so I tried to save it. In doing so, the lockout destabilized and I started to lose the bar. I should have bailed there, and thinking back I really tried to bail there, I knew it was a lost cause, but I seemed to be moving in slow motion. I pushed myself forward, the bar came down behind me, and BAM! it smacked me square on the back of my right shoulder. That knocked me forward and I fell almost all the way off the platform. Now, I was OK- nothing wounded but my pride, but as soon as I opened my eyes there were six people around me asking if I was OK- yeah, I'm good. The bar actually glanced off of my shoulder (the video I saw later looked worse due to the angle). I was so close. I should have made that lift. I should have fuckin' power jerked it. So, in the end, I still scored another meet PR- 128kg (+8kg). That gave me a PR total of 226kg. Each lift was only -2kg from my gym lifts. And, the 131 clean was a PR as well. So, it wasn't a bad day. 4 out of 6 lifts is always a successful day. And, I even got a silver medal. On Sunday, I returned to help out with the school-age group and the novices. Mostly I just helped as a loader and at the end, cleaning up the facility and the training hall downstairs. Loading was work. A lot of up and down, up and down. I think I got more of a workout yesterday than on Saturday. Still, I had a great time, and this weekend reinforced an already strong love that I have for this sport. Next meet is 7 weeks out in Vineland, NJ. And June 30-July 7, I'm going to attend the Weightlifting Camp in Gettysburg, PA- a whole solid week of nothing but eating, sleeping, and most of all- lifting! That week also concludes with an official meet. Going to be a busy year for me, I think... |
