True, I need to get me a pair of those. I wonder if they have them big enough to get over the 22" calves... The tru-fits I got from Walt took a while to break in. |

Thursday, July 7, 2005. Good session tonight, last real unload week before this shit gets heavy. Cleans: 110 x 2 154 x 2 174 x 2 174 x 2 Clean Pulls: 220 x 3 220 x 3 Jerks, from rack: 133 x 2 164 x 2 198 x 2 198 x 2 Front Squat: 174 x 2 174 x 2 RDL: 220 x 5 220 x 5 220 x 5 Hanging Knee Raise/Back Extension superset: BW x 10/10 x 3 Very solid, very fast. Burned through this in about an hour. Cleans were snappy, pulls were very explosive. If anything my only complaint was some wrist pain on the jerks. Just seemed uncomfortable tonight, but it's nothing worth crying about. Events on Saturday, till then... |

looks like Sept 17th for the Jersey contest. Could be a tire medley that I suggested to Cam, only if the tire dealer can bring the tires to the contest. only a half mile away. |

Saturday, July 9, 2005: A tire medley... interesting. Sept. 17 will be a good date for me, 5 weeks from nats. Today was a day that was so intense, man, I left everything at the gym. I don't think there was much left, but somehow I survived a night at work too. Trained with Kirk, Kevin, and Reggie today. 12" Log Clean & Press: 100 x 5 cleans, 5 presses 145 x 5 cleans, 5 presses 170 x 5 cleans, 5 presses 190 x 5 cleans, 5 presses 235 x 5 cleans, 5 presses 260 x 5 cleans, 5 presses. Oh my fucking God. Peel me off of the floor. We pretty much ran these the same way we run the Oly program- the only rest you get is while others are doing their sets and the change of weight. On the heavier sets, it felt like my legs were going to give out. I ended up with very little leg drive on some of those. Some I tried to push-jerk but usually I would only get the first couple reps. So that left a very weak push and then pressing like my fucking life depended on it. I was uncertain about the 260, but I just went for it, took my time when I started getting fatigued. I'm going to keep doing these in this fashion, it's great for conditioning work. It can only help me. Yoke/Farmer's Medley: 375 Yoke, 70' warmup 375 Yoke/175 per hand farmers, 70' each way. 575 Yoke, 70', couldn't lock out the farmers at 245/hand. I started off strong on this, using a different hold on the yoke. I used to stabilize by holding the pillars of the yoke, but since this Oly program, my shoulders are becoming more flexable, so I placed my hands on the crossbar. While this helped me support the weight better, it also taxed my core strength a little more. The 575 was a little wobbly at the end and I dropped it just shy of the 70' mark. When I went to pick up the farmers- 245 each, which I should be able to smoke, I had no gas in my legs. I should have waited a couple seconds, but I wanted to slay this medley. I tried twice more, and though I broke the implements I couldn't finish the pull. I was fucking pissed. Sled Drags: 300 x 50' 400 x 50' 500 x 50' I took my vengeance out on the sled, no stops on any of the runs. I practically moonwalked with the 300. 400 was a little tougher, and the 500 I might have had to breathe a little hard on, but drags and me go together like, well, me and burgers. Deadlifts: 225 x 3 315 x 3 405 x 3 495 x 1 545 x 0, PR attempt, came within mere inches of lockout. So, originally, I was so tired, so cooked, that I wasn't going to deadlift, but Reggie has a way of cajoling me into doing things I don't want to do. He says "Come on, Matt", and I think, fuck, I just can't be a pussy around this guy. So, eventually, my groove comes back. The first set was stiff- we went from 85 degrees outside to inside where the temperature was cool, so my body protested a little on the first set, but 315 went up nicely for a triple. 405 I was figuring on being my last set, and Yoda the Oly coach told me to do a single, but I pulled three quite nicely and had enough in the tank for another rep or two. 495 was more of a fight, but I am to the point where I can do that any time I attempt it. So... 545. It was almost mine. I stepped up, strapped in (hands were dogmeat from the FW), set myself, and pulled. Kirk said that I actually stopped for a brief second and then the bar started to rise again.... just past the knees- this is where I am strongest in the deadlift, but I fucked up. I felt the bar slowing again and fearing it would stop, I tried to hitch it. And then it stopped. I fought it for a few seconds but there was no recovery. Had I just had faith in my ability to lock out the weight, regardless of how long it took, I would have made it. Live and learn, though. Live and learn. I know how close I am, and that is all that matters. It will be mine very shortly. I'm actually glad I worked tonight, because I was so sore and stiff after my drive back that had I sat on my couch or napped, I would have just atrophied into a huge ball of pain. Though it was tough at first, I kept moving, and soon most of my stiffness abated. I've also consumed over 2 gallons of fluid today... Christ, I am glad I have off tomorrow. |

Next contest looks to be August 6 in Waldorf, MD. Just gotta mail in my money. Events are: Stones 250-375 (six stones) Fire Hydrant Carry 385 (?) husafell style Conan's Wheel 540 Yoke 785/Farmers 285, 20 yards each way Tire Flip, 680, 12 flips for time Axle clean & press 250, strict or push press only. Contest is tough, that yoke is going to be incredibly difficult. The -230 crowd has a 710 yoke. And if this is like last year it's all on grass. |

Yeah, it wasn't bad at all considering I had to be kicked in the arse by my training partner to even do the deadlifts. Just goes to show, I need to learn that even when I think I have nothing left, I probably have a little something left. |

Thanks, Sean. Tonight, snatches and squats. From hereon out, everything is heavy, even the unload week (which is just less sets, still heavier than previous ones). But, the contest I am doing falls the weekend of the unload week, which is perfect timing. I will likely do what Kirk, Kev, and Reggie did for their contest a couple weeks ago- Very light Oly workout the Tuesday before and stretch/cardio, rest and recovery, contest, and then do the unload sets the week following the contest. |

Matt invest in a pair of Football cleats, not soccer cleats ( shoe is too low, can fuck your ankle if step in a divit). Go to modells if you have one near by or a playitagain sports there cheap. I got mine for 35 bucks for football cleats ( look for a mid top) Football starts now for high scools so there are a lot of sales. If the whole contest is on grass youll use the cleats 80%. In RI guys were breaking there ass on the tire flip cause they had no footing, grass is wet in the AM an youre fucked. The only events I didnt use them on was the press and the stones. later |

Thanks, Nick- I do have the high-top football cleats I used in Saxobnurg last year, they should still fit fine. Gonna wear them around the house just to break them in a little more. What I need is a good pair of shoes to train on asphalt with. My old New Balance basketball sneakers have seen much better days, and I don't know that they make this particular shoe anymore. Oh yeah, my size also fucks me over, 12-EEEE. If I go 13 they're still not wide enough and they're too long. |

Did I mention how much I love this program? I can't help but think that two months ago when I started it, I was in a post-contest slump and my training was a shambles. After two months on a structured program I feel stronger than I've ever been, my conditioning has improved, and my core strength is starting to catch up to the rest of me. Tonight is the beginning of the last 5 weeks and from this point on it's all close to max effort. Snatches: 89 x 2 110 x 2 120 x 2 143 x 2 153 x 2 158 x 2 158 x 2 Snatch Pulls: 175 x 3 175 x 3 175 x 3 Back Squat: bar x 3 135 x 3 225 x 3 345 x 3 405 x 3 455 x 1, 2 reps after were aided. 455 x 3 455 x 3 455 x 2- went back and nailed the two I missed. RDL: 225 x 5, 5, 5. Abs- machine crunches: 70 x 10 80 x 12 90 x 10 The squats were just really demanding tonight. My left knee was giving me some pain, so once I started my work set (345) I wrapped up. I still don't have the Rehband sleeves, but I hope to have them by next week. I was so pissed on that first set. My first squat was flawless. Second one, I fucked up my form a little and I stuck halfway out of the hole. Third rep attempted I just had no gas left after the fight on the second rep, so I went back and fumed a little bit. Reggie and Kevin were there, though, and they didn't let me wuss out. Deciding to do the last two was my idea. I don't like bombing, and I knew I could finish it, so I did. And Reggie- he hit 680 for a double and 700 for a double, and man, when he attacks that bar, it's like watching a caged carnivorous animal attack a helpless deer. Now that's inspiring. |

Oh man, beat up tonight, but it feels so good. Finished out Cycle 2, one more month to go on this deal. Trained with Reggie, Kirk, and Kevin. It was their last night on the program, and they all hit some big numbers. Kirk cleaned 333 nicely but lost the jerk behind his head. Kevin also cleaned it, but didn't attempt the jerk as his knees were hurting. Reggie was Captain Dynamite, cleaning and jerking 402, then working back up to it and nailing it a second time, and though he says he was tired, he didn't even have to do a full squat to catch it, and his jerks were crisp and snappy. That just made my jaw drop. I didn't do so bad myself, but I feel so... meek compared to those guys. Here's me- Clean & Jerk: 88 x 2 138 x 2 164 x 2 198 x 2 218 x 2 230 x 2 247 x 2 247 x 2 Steve Pulcinella was on hand and he saw some flaws in my technique. On a couple of the heavier cleans I tried to screw the elbows too quickly, and on the heavier jerks, I wasn't committing to the split. I need to drive myself under the bar more and trust in my ability to get there. Clean Pulls: 242 x 3 242 x 3 242 x 3 Front Squat: 133 x 3 173 x 3 193 x 3 220 x 3 220 x 3 220 x 3 RDL: 225 x 5 225 x 5 225 x 5 Technique work- Jerks: 40kg x 1 clean, 5 jerks x 3 I feel really whooped on. Sleep will be my best friend tonight. |

Events today. Axle Clean & Press: warmups with 85 lbs. 151 x 1 clean, 3 presses 151 x 5 cleans, 5 presses 195 x 5 cleans, 5 presses 195 x 3 cleans, 3 presses 250 x 2 cleans, 2 presses, third clean slipped from my shirt. 250 x 3 cleans, 3 presses. Well, I wasn't really going full-tilt, and I should have been. My time was slow on the last set. I was just tired. There will be no room for that on contest day. I only have 60 seconds to get as many cleans and presses as I can. Since I cannot yet power clean 250 on an axle, I have to be quicker with my continentals. My push-presses and split-jerks were decent today, but again, if I split, I have to move quick to an even footing for the rep to count. A power jerk would be easier, but they're not allowed (odd that any press and a split jerk are, but not the power jerk). But, I don't make the rules. Super Yoke: 165 (empty) x 20m forward/backward. 375 x 20m 575 x 20m 775 pickup, but didn't attempt to walk with it. 715 x 3m- fucked, hehe. But I moved the thing, which gives me confidence. The yoke is going to be tough, and making it harder is that it's following a 285/hand-20m farmer's walk. If I move that one (which is 785) I will honestly be surprised. Stones: 165 x warmups/shoulder/press 165 x 5 speed reps 242 x 2 275 x 1, lapped it a second time but didn't get it very high. 308 x lap, no place (I was out of position when I started to rise)- but the lapping was the fastest and strongest I've ever done. So... I need to really work on my speed with the axle, and the stones too. Conditioning is still something I need to work on as well. And the last month of the Oly cycle starts Tuesday. |

Forgot to mention, one of my training partners sold me a brand new pair of Rehband knee sleeves for half of what I would pay new. He only wore them a few times and he was complaining that they were too big. So, now, to paraphrase Sean, I'll have warm joints and therefore, happy joints, and I won't have to spend time using the Inzer wraps on squats except on the heaviest of sets. |

Just so you know, you've inspired me to start Oly lifting in the off-season. I found a local guy who's competed in the Commonwealth Games for Canada, and is now apparently a very good Masters' competitor. He just moved within 15 minutes of me.
