Anyways, I now return you to Matt's training log. ;)

I met my coach by dumb luck too. Actually, he watched me doing cleans once before I really knew how and offered to teach me before I ended up hurting myself.

He's planning on hitting the Canadian record of 115kgs in the snatch for his age group next week, and if he's feeling good, might go for 120kgs, which is the world record. I believe he's C&Jing 135kgs now, too.

Tonight's training... beginning of Cycle 3, the last month of this Olympic program and probably the toughest month. Less reps, singles and doubles on the core exercises, but the weights are heavier.

Also tried out my Rehband knee sleeves tonight. I love them. My knees did not bother me at all, even during the squats. Warm joins = Happy joints.

Snatches:

88 x 2
110 x 2
133 x 2
133 x 1
143 x 1
153 x 1
133 x 1
143 x 1
153 x 1

Snatch Pulls:

176 x 3
176 x 3
176 x 3

Snatches and pulls were easy tonight, and very fast.

Behind-the-neck Jerks:

bar x 3
138 x 2
163 x 2
193 x 2 - up till this, all reps were power jerks.
203 x 1
220 x 1
235 x 1
203 x 1
235 x 1 - these were split jerks.

The first split-jerk at 203, I didn't commit enough to. It still went up fast but I was just getting my feel. The rest of them were lightning fast as I really drove myself under the bar.

Thumb pain was manageable with Inzer wrist wraps, but the thumb loop was uncomfortable. Might just unloop my thumbs when I use them.

Back Squat:

135 x 3
225 x 3
315 x 3
345 x 3
395 x 3
425 x 2
425 x 2
425 x 2

No spotter. No belt. Only my Rehband sleeves. Ass to grass. And they all felt strong as fuck. Actually almost psyched myself out on the last set, as I unracked the bar, placed my feet, and lowered, I shifted too far forward. Fuck. Thought I was going to blow the rep, but instead, I paused at the bottom, realigned under the weight, and from a dead stop, powered out of the hole. No sticking point!!!! Did the second rep after an extended breath.

RDL:

220 x 5
220 x 5
220 x 5

Abs- Weighted Crunch Machine:

60 x 15
80 x 15
100 x 15

Owwie. Last set took a lot of effort.

Starting off on the snatches, my back started to cramp up on me, and I thought I was in for a painful workout, but I loosened up OK in time for the squats. I wanted to challenge myself without wearing my belt, see if my back gave me issues. Not a one. I feel really good tonight about my training.

Did I mention that I love this program?

Tonight was a reminder that I am mortal. Sometimes you feel on top of the world, other times, every lift feels like it's going to be your last. I got through it tonight, but I feel quite battered and spent.

Cleans:

88 x 2
120 x 2
143 x 2
173 x 2
183 x 1
198 x 1
208 x 1
183 x 1
198 x miss, bar popped out of my grip
198 x 1
208 x 1

These were full squat cleans, and this was the best part of my training tonight. However, I didn't realize how much more they take out of me than power cleans.

Clean Pulls:

230 x 3
230 x 3
230 x 3

Last set of these was the best one.

Jerks from the Rack:

138 x 2
163 x 2
193 x 2
208 x 1
218 x 1
234 x 1
208 x 1
218 x 1
234 x 1

These were absolute shit. I had no leg drive, very little snap. I did alright driving under the bar but my timing was off. Chalk it up to being exhausted. I just felt like crap.

Front Squat:

198 x 3
198 x 3
208 x 2
208 x 2
208 x 2

The poor sets of jerks made me mad, so I blew through these and did these as explosively as I could, trying to pop the bar as I stood upright.

RDL:

220 x 5
220 x 5
220 x 5

Swiss Ball Back Stretches:

3 x 30 seconds

Wasn't my worst training session on this program by far, but I felt it could have been better. Next week is the heaviest of all three cycles. Since event work is Saturday, I will have three days' rest before going into it. I plan on eating well, sleeping lots, and come next Tuesday, some shit is going to get annihilated.

Bring it.

I have always maintained that nothing will drain you more in any gym lift than the full clean and jerk.

You're probably right, Sean, nothing has quite drained me like that. And, I wasn't even doing the jerks with the cleans. By the time I got to them I was just spent.

Saturday, events day.

Axle Clean & Press:

151 x 1 clean, 5 presses.
195 x 1 clean, 5 presses.
195 x 5 continental cleans, 5 presses.
230 x 2 continental cleans, 2 presses.

And here is where the fun begins.
*********************************************

The axle seems to stare back at me, asking me.

When are you going to do this? Come on.

I gather my focus. For sixty seconds, you're mine. Two-hundred and fifty pounds from floor to overhead, as many times as I can. Reggie waits with the stopwatch. Kevin, Yoda, and Chrissie watch, giving me encouragement.

I don't remember the first two, they went by so fast.

"20!", says Reggie, giving me a heads up on how much time has elapsed. I'm starting to feel the fatigue. The next continental clean takes an extra hop. It hops to my chest.

Here is where it falls apart. I rush the push-press, and before I can think, I drop the axle.

"Pick it back up!" yells Reggie as I pass the 30 second mark. I'm breathing heavy, my calm goes to shit. I grab the axle and lift, but miss the clean. It bounces too low on my abdomen, below my navel. Pain shoots through me. 50 seconds in. Again I attempted the clean, and made it, but time had expired.

Angry, burning up, and out of breath, I turn to leave the platform.

"Pick it up."

I look at Reggie like, what the fuck?

"Come on, give me another one, let's go".

Muttering a curse under my breath, I step back towards the axle. It's laughing at me. It's making me eat my words. I grab the axle, clean it, and get another press.

"One more"

Goddammit. Just when I think it's over, the real nightmare begins.

After a struggle trying to get the clean, I finally get a 4th rep.

"Again".

I look at Reggie and just say, "I have nothing left". He doesn't buy it. He keeps pushing me. I grab the axle again, but I really didn't have anything left. As I attempt the clean, it hits me in the same spot that caused me a lot of pain earlier on. White fills my vision and I just drop like a stone.

Two minutes and thirty some-odd seconds.

I am shamed. Humbled. I can't even walk off the platform, I don't have the strength in my legs. Disappointed, I make it to a bench and sit there, trying to think, catch my breath, wondering where it all went wrong. And I have one more set to go yet.

The next set.

Same start as before. The first two went fine. I gave myself an extra second before I cleaned it a third time, and again another breath before the press. It went up. 45 seconds in... 50 seconds by the time I grabbed the axle again, and I was halfway trough the clean when 60 seconds expired. Kept going and missed the press.

"One more!"

Son of a bitch, this guy is relentless. I get a fourth rep, and then I hear his voice again.

"One more." I just look at him.

"Don't look at me, look at the axle. Let's go".

Again, I say, through heavy breaths, "No gas in the tank".

And again, he doesn't believe it for a second. He just looks at me like he expects me to get a fifth rep. So, I do it. I don't know where I found the energy to do that, but I did. Reggie says to me, "That looked better than your first rep, don't tell me you have nothing left".

**********************************************************
Every day is a learning process, but today was more like that moment of clarity that someone in denial occasionally ends up facing.

I've heard it said many times by various athletes that to excel you have to push yourself past the point where your body is telling you to quit. I've read it countless times in magazines from MILO to Muscle & Fitness. But until yesterday I never really understood it, because I had never really had to reach that far down and pull something from what I thought was nothing. Every fiber in my body was screaming at me to stop, but unless I learn to stop listening to that voice that beckons me to quit, I won't get any better. I won't improve. And that, to me, is worse than failure.

The rest of my training was solid. I started applying that newly-learned lesson right away and it paid off.

Deadlifts:

225 x 5
315 x 5
405 x 3
495 x 3, 2 reps with hook grip for a strapless PR (strapped for the third), and it's also a PR for reps.
545 x 3 attempts, first attempt was the best but it stalled.

I was solid off the floor but right below the knees, death. Reggie and Kevin noticed a flaw in my form, and Reg mentioned that they tend to reveal themselves most often on the maximal weights.

Sled Drags:

300 x 80'
390 x 80'
435 x 80'
435 x 80'

These were solid. Never stopped, though the last one towards the end I slowed a little.

It was a great training session, and again, it was just one of those days where I realize the sheer magnitude of what I have yet to learn, not just about training, but about conquering myself.

Man, isn't this where a coach/partner makes all the difference. Easy enough to accept and lie to yourself, but another set of eyes can always call "bullshit" on you.

Exactly. I wonder why I can't just cut through my own BS, but it takes time. I have to remember that for my first thirty years on this earth I was a procrastinator who always took the path of least resistance. Unlearning old habits is difficult.

After we finished the axle, I pulled Reggie aside and thanked him for not letting me give up and for pushing me so hard. It's made a huge difference in my training and I'm very grateful to have that kind of coaching.

As for me having the best log? I don't know... I just figure if I am going to share it I might as well try and give you a ringside seat once in a while instead of just X sets for Y reps at Z weight.

Tonight was just heavy, no way around it. The squats have my legs knackered as all hell...

Anyway, here's the scoop.

Snatches:

110 x 2
110 x 2
120 x 2
138 x miss, bad lockout.
138 x 1
148 x 1
158 x 1
164 x 1, fugly but finished.
154 x 1
159 x 1
164 x miss, form is just off tonight.
164 x 1, there we go. Beautiful.

I usually spend more time with warmups, but I was trying to work in with Yoda's new Padawans who were doing cleans. So, I half-assed my warmup and as a result my technique was just slightly off the whole exercise. The last snatch, though, just flew up. These were all power snatches, since my squats coming up were heavy and I didn't want to pre-exhaust my legs.

Snatch Pulls:

175 x 3
175 x 3
175 x 3
175 x 3

Gravy.

Back Squat:

bar x 3
135 x 3
225 x 3
345 x 3
395 x 3
445 x 3
470 x 2
470 x 2
470 x 2
470 x 2
470 x 2

Stayed raw till the 445 set, wearing only my Rehband knee sleeves. I just got these last week and I love them. From 445 on I belted up. I feel great about this squat workout, as my 1RM is only 495. To double 470 for 5 sets has really shown how much my squat has improved since I hit that PR last fall. So, I am very stoked about that (though I'll be paying for it tomorrow).

RDL:

230 x 5
230 x 5
230 x 5

Abs- weighted crunch machine:

80 x 15
90 x 15
100 x 15

And... done. This is probably the most challenging day of all the cycles.. In a few weeks I'll have to double 495 for 2 sets but I honestly don't think that will be as hard as what I just did. Thursday is heavy clean & jerk for me, with a PR attempt on the schedule. Until then...

Sean, probably after the Oly cycle ends, maybe 1 backoff week and then work up to a PR attempt the following week. I know I can break 500. How would you recommend I approach it? Trips, doubles, and then anything over 400, singles 'till I hit the wall?

Nick, you may beat me on the truck pull 'cause I've never done one, but remember, I got about 80 pounds on you. I'm gonna give you an all out war, my friend.
