Here is the deal, in a week I compete at the RI states championships. the first event is a 900lb tire flip for 50 feet the drag 500lb chain for 50 feet. chain im not concern with, the tire Iam. I have gotten stronger in this offseason but due to the lack of a heavy tire ( my training tire is 450lbs) which I train for conditioing. In the last month ive done some work by stacking 2 on top of each other, which I can flip but I cannot do this repeatedly obviously. I ve also done those 450 flips uphill ( steep) which were tough but not 900lbs. The problem I have is these tires are small which doesnt allow me to dive in so to speak but literally just deadlift them up, what is anyone suggestion how how to attack this in a week? BTW i am able to dive in an flip the double stack. NICK |

On a bigger tire you'll be able to really dig your shoulders into it, and it will be less of a deadlift. This should help a lot--a lot. You'll surprise yourself, Nick. |

Tire width makes a difference. The tires used in the US tend to be Goodyear. This means they tend to be thinner than what you see on WSM. Get you chest and shoulders on the tire, wide feet, narrow hands. Like a sumo DL. Most of the grip will be with your chest and shoulders on a 900, not your hands. It will probably feel like it isn't going to budge - initially. Thenit will suddenly "pop" up to your knees. If it's heavy and kind of stops at that height, stick a knee under it and re-grip to finish the flip. The second flip will feel easier than the first. |

I wouldn't stress about training it too hard now, too. Just relax, and let yourself enjoy the first event. When you get back, find some scrap tires that are smaller and stuff them in the middle like I've done. As Paul mentioned in another thread, attaching some chain to the inside would do wonders to increase the weight of your 450. |

Don't sweat it. During my last contest they increased the tire weight by about 150lbs. at the last minute. A couple people suggested I do some practice flips to get used to the weight but I declined, wanting to put all my effort behind the event itself. In the end I more than doubled my PR for # of flips. Leave the stress for the other guys & just relax. You'll be ready. |

Personally I would grab the tyre outside your legs! If you grab it on the inside of your legs you`ll tend to deadlift it instead of driving through it! you should be fine on a 900lb tyre Nick! |

Hey Nick, if you can spare a Saturday or Sunday- or any day, really, you can come to Iron Sport and give our 900 pound tire a go. I know it would be a whole day thing, but I'll take a day off of work and we can just flip the thing all day long. But if you can't come down, just remember- push forward against the tire rather than trying to lift it. I do best with about a 4-5 lug width grip and almost a sumo-squat position. Duck your feet a little bit to get the most foot-to-ground contact possible, keep your hips low, and drive. When the tire is high enough, stick a knee under there and just work the tire up until you're able to get under it and push it over. I do it almost like a continental clean, because I still can't get it up and over in one motion yet. But, like I said, you're welcome to come down- I'll even meet you at a train station in NJ if you want, so you can get some experience on a huge tire. Oh, and for the RI contest, bring a pair of cleats, I think the tire flip might be on grass. |

I am not certain it's on grass, but it might be. When I trained up there, that's where they had the tires. |

And really, I've been telling you to come to Iron Sport for a year now. When you going to come? You should come to the Pacifico Ford Liberty Classic pro contest July 1-2. It's gonna be a blast. |

dont know, there was a flurry of posts on it but now nothing. If i qualify fo rthe nats or not ill mos tlikely do it ( depending on the Boss (wife) ) also i really have my heart set on doing the Snowman in January its way off, but if I do well Saturday an in Jersey an make some good gains Ill put the money away to do that instead of the Nats. One step at a time though. NICK |

OK, well, keep me posted. If I hear anything through the grapevine at Iron Sport I will keep you appraised. And I am sure the boss will let the bull out of the pen for a Jersey contest. |
