Here's a couple of shots of my basement gym: home-made 4x8 foot platform: ![]() my rack and adjustable bench: ![]() the back corner: ![]() the ceiling is high enough that I can press standing up, and after those pics were taken I added a pair of 100lb plates, bringing my total to ~720lbs, which gives me something to shoot for. |

Thanks, I'm pretty pleased with it. My original floorplan called for an 8'x8' platform, with the rack in the alcove, except that there is a giant beam in the ceiling bisecting the alcove that would *just*prohibit the rack, so I compromised on a 4'x8' platform. In addition I have a nice pair of 2" thickbar DB's, a crap ezbar, and some bands and boards. I'm pretty well kitted out, anything else would simply be gravy. |

From NorthBay, but still OK
|
Did you buy the platform, or make it yourself? Nice set up by the way, I am very envious. |

the platform is simple: two 4x8 sheets of 1" plywood screwed together, with a 4x4 piece screwed into the center on top. The rubber mats are from costco. They come as 3x4', and are in a grid pattern of 1 square foot, so it's easy to cut them. |

Now you're boring us
|
I don't have any pics of my garage gym, but I've got a cheap olympic bar with the 250 or so pounds of plates that came with it, 2 sets of bumpers (45 and 25), adjustable bench, set of powerblocks, dip stand (that is somewhat still together), and a power rack. Here's the rack I have: ![]() But picture it without the pretty boy, and with a lawn mower box and a weed eater box on top, right under a light up reindeer hanging from the rafters. |

Barrellifter, that gym of yours is hardcore and sweet. It's nice to have a wish list of equipment, but honestly, the basics are what pays the bills; rack, bench, platform, lots of plates, a bar and a pair of db handles, and what more do you really need? Mike the Silverback and I were talking about this when he was over at my place once, and we agreed that you really don't need a load of space or a boatload of gear to be a successful lifter. Ask Sean or Mike or any of the long-timers from P&B about my progress since I moved into my house, versus when I was Chronic Routine Changing and dicking around with abreviated training in commercial gyms. That said, here's my wish list for expanding my gym: 1) more bands 2) a nice rock in the 100-150lb range (for cardio) 3) a back extension bench for hypers |

Thanks, I pretty much now have everything I need to train what matters. A CD/Radio sits on the shelf but I forget to turn it on half the time. It's a setup that's just enough to turn a old, fat & short guy like me into a strongman. |

The only snag i`ve got now is do i need to swap my STANDARD bar & plates for an OLYMPIC set up. My main concern is that a std 7ft bar can`t hold enough weight safely, the last thing i want is to go down on a squat & the bar bend around me. Any input welcomed

Are there any used sporting goods places near you that will buy the old standard weights & bar? Sold mine years ago and then went to a place that sells olympic weights, etc. If not, take an ad out in the local paper or post notices. |

Nowhere at all mate. If i get my arse in gear & sort some bits & pieces out i can just about afford to buy Oly stuff b4 i get rid of my standard stuff. i`ll put the std stuff in `FREE ADS`. The real question is do i need it ? |

TAT 70, check out some of the equipment (bars, DB handles etc) made by our own Tom Jones (Viking Power). The forums below have info, and you could send him a PM with any questions. |
