Now you're boring us

When you guys do 5x5, do you like to use a routine like McCallum recommended, ala 2 warm up sets and 3 the same weight, or do you like to do 5 progressively heavier sets? |

I think if your doing a proper 5x5 i would do it at a set weight.I followed one of Gary Taylors training manuals which worked on %of your max.So it might be 5x5 at 75% of max, then the next week maybe 5 sets of 3 reps at 80 or 85 % of max. |

I agree

There is also the variation where you pick a weight, try to get 5x5, and move up once you do. Colin had tremendous success in his overhead press with this, and it worked well for me benching. |

5x5 with one weight seems like alot, but I suppose that's why it works. I've had good luck in the past doing a warmup of 5, a moderate weight with 5, then adding weight when all the last 3 sets are 5. I suppose an extra warmup set and then 5 working sets might take longer, but it would probably have good results for strength and conditioning. I got burned out last time I tried that, but I was trying it with cleans, so that might have something to do with it. |

The way I was told to do it properly is 2-4 Warmup sets, then 5 sets of 5 at a set wieght, Increase the wieght if you can get all 5x5, if you cant (eg. 5,5,4,3,3) Keep at it till you can. |
