I see a lot of comps have some form of deadlift event that means pulling from about 18",so i decided to start training 18" deads. I find it really hard to get the bar moving & in fact find the exercise harder to do than normal deads. Can anyone give me any tips or advice on how to improve the lift. :hug CHEERS TAT |

If you're training them from the rack, the lift will be quite a bit harder to do than from boxes because the bar will already have a lot of bend in it. When you lift from boxes, you can get some flex in the bar and increase momentum even before the plates start moving. Since 18" deads are so taxing on the system, I just train normal deads, and will throw 18" pulls about one month from a contest. I found that after three weeks, I'd get completely wrecked and my strength would decrease. You may want to take them kind of easy, and just throw in a few lighter singles in after your regular deads, especially if you train out of the rack. I've heard that Romanian deads are an excellent exercise for increasing your 18" pull, and they won't throw off the rest of your training as much. |

I personally don't lift much more weight on the 18" deadlift than I do from the floor for example when I did whitecliffs I did 365kg equal to Paul Wood I can deadlift around 340kg from the floor and he does about 300kg some people just seem to find it alot easier, I couldn't get any drive off the floor. It's definately something worth practising!!! |

I think it might be worth doing some stiff leg deadlifts with the knee's unlocked as this way your training your back and hamstrings which is what you really use in the 18"deadlift. When practicing 18" i tend to put the heavier weights at the ends of the bar to try and get more flex from it like you would with the proper thing. Good luck

It could be that your sticking point is at about 18" so starting there will be extra difficult. |
