Not exactly a car but quite incredible anyway Mercedes racecar transporter ![]() The original was built by Mercedes in the '50s, had a Gullwing engine and could top 100 MPH. The one in the pictures is a copy, the original was scrapped. |

hmmmm yes the 'cedes f1 carrier. they built it to get their cars anywhere on in europe in short order. part of their thinking was also to demoralise the other f1 teams. if the car carrier can go that fast then how fast can the race car go? the boys on the factory floor sectioned the cab of a truck,widened it,stuffed an in line 6 engine under it an sculpted a rear deck out of aluminum, a rolling peice of art. it sat in mothballs in the mercedes plant for years then one of the past presidents decided a purge was in order and the carrier was on of the victims. about 5 or 6 years ago the exec at benz thought gee would it not be neat to pull that thing out of storage but alas it had been turned into beer kegs so they got every available picture they could find and every part they thought was on it and sent it all to a private firm who then painstakingly reconstructed it. they can not longer do such things on the factory floor due to automation,one offs will never be made on major auto factory floors again. |

That's an understatement. I read an article on the restoration in a British car magazine. They spared no cost and effort to get it right. |

most likely the one i read. there was also the one i read about the dude who set up his own machine shop to recreate a porsche 962 i think ar maybe the 907,must find article.he even had the uprights casted for the suspension. dude was passionate about his porsches. |

You got me curious about it and I'll have to dust the magazine stack. It was either in "Classic & Sports Car" or "Thoroughbred & Classic Car." I do recall reading in one of those an article about a guy who built Porsche 907 replicas but put in modern Porsche engines and sold them to guys who didn't want to damage their real 907s, it must be the same article you mentioned. |

October 2001, both magazines ran a story on the transporter recreation. Apparently all they had to work with was one specs sheet and 40 pictures. It took 7 years to build it but as a testament to the quality of their research and work they got the finished article's weight to be the exact 2,120 kg. as the original was. |
