Anyone who knows me personally knows I am an animal lover. Maybe because they are loyal and never talk back. They are always happy to see you and never insult.

I own 3 small dogs, 3 parrots and formerly 5, now 4 ferrets.

It was in May 2004 and I was devastated from having a real piss poor performance at a strongman meet. I hadn't trained in 2 months because I was full of issues, dad was very sick, lost oppertunity at work, school sucked etc... We just financed him and Gizmo along with a cage out as a spur of the moment thing. Janie had bugged me for years and I thought making her happy would make me feel better.

Anyways, Milo was only 1 month old. He was so much bigger than the other ferrets his age, I decided to call him Milo, after the great strongman. Me an Janie lived in a crappy little apartment back then. We were stuggling to make ends meet because Janie was only working part-time but she was also a full time university student and I had to support. We had just recently moved out from my parents, they had too many issues and I couldn't handle it anymore. Milo just brought us some joy to get by that hard time.

I wasn't originally a fan of ferrets, but they certainly grew on me. For one, they could kick my dogs asses. Espacially Milo, which made his name suit him all the better. They are also surprisingly affectionate and extremly playfull. We learnt alot from them, in the winter they bulk up and get fat, in the spring they shed fur and loose some fat. So their weight fluxuates a lot, and Milo would seem to hit extremes more than other ferrets. 2 ferrets soon became 3, then 4, then 5.

When Janie finally finished school and got a full time job, things suddenly became so much easier. In 2005, we decided to build a duplex, and my parents, whose problems they had resolved, decided to lease the upper part. This was ideal because they can babysit our zoo when I compete, yet I still get the independance I need. I barely see them the week, but on week-ends it's quite nice to go upstairs and have a cup of coffee with my parents when I feel like it. Not only did having a nice place make me and Janie's relationship much easier, the animals loved it. When home, sometimes I open their uber sized cage and let them run around the house. The dogs would play with them and they seemed to love it.

The last 2 weeks I noticed how thin Milo had gotten. I could feel his ribs and he was always sleeping alone, they normally all bundle up together. I figured his weight loss was due to the spring. Milo always lost a dramatic amount of weight at this time, but never this much. I didn't think much of it, but yesterday morning when I went to feed them, they were all awake awaiting their morning meal, except milo who's head was hanging out of his bed. I thought he was sleeping, Milo was always deaf and ferrets are deep sleepers. I tapped him a few times and noticed he was awfully cold, Milo just wasn't going to wake up today.
Everything was suddenly so clear, all the signs I was too negligent to notice popped up in my head and I blame myself for not bringing him to a vet. I never though a fuzzball that weighed 3lbs could make me so sad.

I put the poor bugger in a box and put that into a bag all sealed up. I drove the countryside to find a burial spot in the woods. I placed a roughly 150lbs rock on top to make sure nothing disturbs his rest. He only lived to 2 years old. The average lifespan of a ferret is 8.

Really sorry for that, Jesse. It's always tough losing a pet. Sometimes that feels worse than losing a person in your life, odd though that might sound.

Speaking from experience, losing a beloved pet really does suck.

So sorry to hear about Milo.
I`m a huge animal lover myself.
I have 2 Staffordshire Bull Terriers
1 male (11 yrs old) CHESTER & 1 female
(7 yrs old) DAISY.
Lately Chester has been showing his age &
just this makes me feel very sad.
I`ve lost loved 1`s but i really don`t want
to contemplate `THE BIG FELLA` passing on.
Time is a great healer though Jesse .

Sorry to hear that, Jesse. Pets can become an integral part of your life very quickly, and it's so hard to lose them.

Thanks ... at least the parrots might outlive me. got an african grey that's only 8 months old, he thinks he's a dog. He walks around with the dogs, barks and chews on their bones and chew toys.

Jesse,

Look at it this way, bringing him up to the vet may have easily revealed something incurable and you may have been faced with having to put him to sleep. I once had a poodle whom I did not have the guts to put to sleep and it was a tough way to go. It may not be much of a consolation but at least he's no longer suffering.

Jeez that's the truth. I went through a similar period with a dog of mine and she really suffered towards the end through my own selfishness in not being willing to let go.

Sorry to hear that Jesse.

I remember how rough it was on my wife when we had to bury her little dog that her family had for about 11 years.

I must've had about 8 different dogs growing up but I never had them long enough to get attached to them.
