It's not supposed to be close to the truth. It's fiction. |

Speaking of that, you know what really hacks me off? These Christian groups with nothing better to do than piss and moan about the stupid movie. IT'S A FRICKIN' MOVIE. There's an abundance of poor people who need food and shelter. There are people living in horrible situations who need prayer, comfort, and aid. There are problems in this world that far exceed the ficticious claims made by this movie. And speaking of ficticious claims, is it really any less reasonable than the claim of a virgin getting pregnant and giving birth to the son of God who died for the sins of mankind and was resurrected into Heaven after three days, promising to return? Not trying to bash anyone's beliefs, but people who take the Bible literally or who follow the Christian faith really don't have much of a factual basis to rest their beliefs upon, so who are they to get their knickers in a twist when someone takes creative liberty with their story? I think that, as usual, certain loudmouth fundamentalists would rather rail against pop culture and entertainment, because that way they don't have to deal with real problems, and they also have a handy scapegoat to blame when their children are out getting high and having sex. We just need a movie version of Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal. The author based as much of it as he could on non-canonized gospels, and made up the rest. Jesus (traslated as Josh), goes looking for the 3 wisemen and learns Buddhism, Judo, and Yoga along the way. |

I don't listen to professional critics anymore. They can't review for shit. Probably because they are getting payed by the production companies under the table to give good reviews to help promote a movie. I know womse critics were caught doing this before. They gave rave reviews for Munich and A New World and both were fucking terrible. They gave shit reviews for Aeon Flux and I thought it was decent, not great, but worthy of much more than they reviewed it. |

Yeah, but I know it has a lot of history woven into it, and am curious at which point the movie takes off on its fictional route. I've heard it's very anti-Catholic. |

I just finished reading it, and I'll tell you this, it's not anti-Catholic. It is, however, anti-fundamentalist and anti-Opus Dei. There's a passage in The Da Vinci Code where they discuss the fact that a lot of these stories were made up to sell Christianity because it wouldn't catch on otherwise. The stories weren't meant to be taken literally, but rather to be taken as exempla of strong moral behaviour. I mean, sure, the movie and book may both have lots of heretical ideas in them, but they also have a lot to offer to get people re-thinking Christian values and the path the Church is taking, or has taken regarding finances since around 1CE. It's definitely worth a read; however, I've heard the movie is poorly cast and drawn out, so you may just want to pay seven dollars and buy the book. |

Well, Opus Dei is a Catholic group, to my knowledge, though as far as I know they are not albinos. Certainly the over-reaction to the book and the movie has helped hype it and, if anything, given credence to the idea that they have something to hide. Overwhelmingly, the reaction of Christians I know has been positive- anything that gets people talking etc etc. Most of Brown's Biblical "facts" are taken from the Gnostic Bible, which is not really a Christian doctrine. I think, personally, Dan Brown is a hack. He's John Grisham. seriously, if your faith can be shaken by one of this guy's novels, it wasn't that strong to begin with. |

I had heard that he used several of the gnostic gospels and filled in the blanks quite creatively. I'm curious to see how creatively. |

1CE = Year number one, Common Era (aka "After the Death of Christ"). ------------------- There are actually more people in the movie/book who belong to Opus Dei and are not albinos, so I don't think the generalization of Opus Dei being filled with albinos works. I think the entire albino thing was just to add some interest to the character of Silas. -------------------- Oh, and the movie leaves out way too much of the thought provoking content from the book. Also, some of the stuff was changed drastically. However, I came to a realization as I was complaining after the movie... it's pretty ridiculous to get upset at a movie for changing the story of a book that is changing the story of another book. |
