Is this shit for real. I'm a canadian and never heard how bad it was. I'm a big animal lover and if our government is real concealing the butcher jobs that we are being accused of, I'd be awfully ashamed of our country. |

Totally fucked up. From what I have heard (I've heard a fair bit) it really is as bad as it sounds. Plus, they are upping the quota next year. Surely there has to be a more humane way to make a living..... Jonathan |

Exactly. As far as being embarassed by my country, it'll take a lot more than clubbing some fucking seals before I start raging against the Maple Leaf. - Sean |

Nobody but eskimos. My whole problem with the "outrage" people have is that most people are heavily selective in what they decide to be outraged about. So clubbing a fuzzy seal is bad. Got it. How about those $120 sweatshop shoes you're wearing? That's cool? Fillin your car? Despite the fact that even though we make it, it's probably been imported from a country who doesn't even treat women as second class citizens. But that's no big deal, right? There's a lot worse shit going on in the world than bashing seals and a lot of the products we have are directly tied to and related to that. All I want is consistency. Don't get offended by one travesty and not another. - Sean |

Face it -- we are meat eaters (with the exception of the two vegans on this board). The animals we eat were killed. Does it matter how humanely that was accomplished? Dead is dead. If a man shoots ten people in the head and kills them, is that better or worse than a man who shoots ten people in the chest and kills them more slowly? Why? People also protest about how cow milk is obtained, how eggs are produced, how chickens, beef and pigs are raised...the list goes on and on. Sean brought up fossil fuels -- the boats that the Greenpeace guys are motoring around in, the helicopters and planes they are flying around in -- all are contributing to environmental pollution, greenhouse gases, global warming. All were manufactured in factories using modern technology. Even vegetarians get their food at the end of a long supply chain involving tractors, trucks, refrigeration, electricity (produced in part by polluting power plants) and other environmentally harmful processes. Yep, you can't just pick and choose causes. When these protesters can set an example by living blameless lives, can weave their own clothing, make their own footwear, manufacture their own modes of transportation using renewable, non-polluting power sources and natural materials (can't even ride horses -- that would be inhumane. Think cedar canoes, instead...unless some bad loggers cut down that tree), grow their own crops naturally, using no commercially-produced seeds, fertilizers, water or electricity, and refuse to use ANY commercially-produced product or service...in other words, get off the pedestal and back up ALL of their words...then I might listen. Is this rant related to the topic? Sure. Why should one cause be more important than another? You want inhumane? Try this... http://www.pawswithheart.com/free_to_good_home.htm |

Besides, all that you hear of from the seal hunt is what the hippie tree huggers want you to hear, and they're very selective of what they talk about, only the worst of the seal hunters which is a very small percentage of them. |

Of course it does, how can you say otherwise ? Wouldn't you rather be killed quick than to suffer needlessly before hand ? I have no quarrels about eating meat, but please dispose of the animal in a humane way. I understand there are other situations in the world. But this one seems quite easy to handle. Crimes against animal rights should be dealt with. Period. Fines and sentences should be imposed. They found in a man's basement near montreal 19 dogs that were starved. One was a skeleton still tied to his leash. The fucker deserves to be punished. Anyone who owns a dog and isn't a douchebag can appreciate that animals are capable of logical thought and emotion. Yes we need to eat animal flesh but what makes us civilized humans is how we handle it. Sine we live in a first world country, I refuse to believe that it's acceptable to make it any less than a quick and painless death. I saw some really grotesque footage of someone bludgeoning a seal and then hook and drag it while it was still alive. That certainly isn't necessary and should be dealt with. |

I have no doubt that it's a small percentage but it should still be dealt with and those liable should be punished accordingly. |

Hah...it was a rant, it doesn't HAVE to make sense
;)
I'd rather not be killed at all, thanks. That's my point. There are no "varying degrees" of dead. When I lived in BC, I used to fish. I pulled it out of the water and smashed it behind the head. Humanely killed, I guess. I then gutted, cleaned, cooked and ate the fish. I now eat commercially-caught fish. How are these fish killed? Are they individually thumped on the head immediately after being pulled out of the water, or do they spend an agonizing amount of time, slowly asphyxiating in the hold of the ship? Is there a difference, and does it matter? We are putting an end to the life of living beings. Are these seal hunters deliberately setting out to torture these animals? Are the fishermen deliberately torturing the fish? If they are taking some sick pleasure out of it, then YES! They should be punished. I totally agree there. |
