Jesse, I know you have a houseful of pets, and you love animals. That's awesome, and I'm not knocking you for that. I've got two cats right now that I rescued as 3-week-old kittens from beneath my front porch after their mother was ran over in the street. I've dropped over $1500 in vet bills for them since...and I love 'em and everything, even though I never really wanted them. Growing up on a small farm, having to hold down animals that I had thought of as pets whilst their throats were being (humanely) cut, watching the blood spurt, feeling them struggle, hearing them bawl, seeing the panic in their slowly dimming eyes...having to skin and butcher them, wrap the meat and put it in the freezer, only to eat it at some later date...it made me realize that there is no good way for any animal to die. I felt awful at the time (still do, really), but it inured me to some extent against stories like the one we are discussing. Sometimes, I guess you just have to adopt a more pragmatic viewpoint. |

I agree that there is really no nice way to kill an animal, and I would have to argue that it isn't strictly necessary (just my point of view - I'm certainly not here to spark debates on animal rights!). But the point that I will make is that there is a difference in killing an animal for food, and killing an animal so that so rich twat can parade it's skin around. Killing an animal to eat is far more justifiable - you need to eat to live, and if you eat meat, then that's what you eat. Who can raise their hand and say that they need to wear a seal skin coat?? There really are excellent synthetic alternatives. Secondly, as you say, there is no nice way to die, but given a choice, would you rather be shot in the head or beaten to death with a club, then potentially skinned alive? Jonathan |

Got anything made out of leather, Jonathan? Like ANYTHING? Cuz it's animal skin, dude. It's just not fuzzy. I would imagine 99.9% of all the guys on fishing boats, lobster and crab boats, seal hunting, whale hunting, etc don't spend more than 2 seconds of their day debating the morality of it. They're punching a clock, thinking about being safe, about going home in a few weeks time, seeing their wives and kids and providing a living for them. Morality about killing something that isn't a pet wouldn't even enter the equation. A simple rule about ANYTHING on this planet is this: if there is a demand, SOMEONE will find a supply. - Sean |

Nope, no leather, not even a little bit. No silk or wool either. (trying not to be dragged into a discussion about morality). There is, at least for me, a difference between hunting for food, and hunting for the sake of vanity. I realise that there is a demand for fur, and I find that sad, but I think as much as there is duty to reduce such a demand, there is also one for those in a position to curtail supply. I just find the whole seal hunting situation sad. As I said, I do not believe that there is any justifiation for the use of seal fur. Use synthetic stuff - it's cheaper and there won't be 300,000 seals being clubbed to death each year. Jonathan |

yeah, Grant. I grew up on a pretty stereotypical Wisconsin dairy farm. Killing a seal just for the skin seems kind of shallow to me. Kind of like a deer hunter around here shooting a 12-point buck then sawing off the head so he can mount the rack, and leaving the rest. I don't know about the actual cruelty of a seal hunt, cuz I've never seen one. Running around bashing seals does seem kind of like caveman behavior. Anyways, I think a lot of people (city slickers especially) get too worked up (not saying anyone in this thread is like this, so don't fuckin flame me) about animals and death because they personify animals way too much. When I was a kid we had pet cats on the farm but if one got sit on by a cow or hit by a car we didn't cry over it because at the end of the day it's still just a cat and last time I checked human life > animal life. Dad told us to get the fuck over it. Sure it sucks, but like says in the Bible "you are worth more than many sparrows" or cats as it were. Contrast that with these women you see out there talking to their little purse-dogs (I call them punting dogs) like they're babies, referring to their 100 million stinking cats as "my babies", and worse yet having their dog "sign" their fucking Christmas card they send out every year. I mean, I love your dog to death but she didn't "Sign" the damn card, YOU wrote her name on the card!!!! I may be nothing but a redneck bumpkin (and American at that. the worst kind) sitting in a cubicle pretending to be sophisticated, but god damn it animals aren't people! I hate cruelty to animals but to have a lack of perspective in the other direction doesn't help either. |
