This is another event organised by one of the gyms I use (Gymnation and our unit gym being the other) as entertainment for the kids during the summer holidays. I was asked a few weeks ago if I thought I could pull a lorry and said, in an off the cuff comment 'yeah probably'. Low I gets a call out of the blue saying that they had arranged a fire engine with Gloucester County Fire services for August 27th. Well I huffed and puffed as I realised I am out of the country at the European Grip Championships from the 24th to the 26th. Which means the very next day after arriving back I'm supposed to be feeling my oats and ready to pull a fire tender. On the off (and most likely) chance I'll be too fucked from lifting to do it and as these chances only come up now and again I thought I'd put some feelers out to see if I could get some interested parties to come and have a go. I've just been online to the Dennis Fire engine page and that says that the tenders are 14500-kilos GVW (gross vehicle weight). I think that that is doable if probably a little slow. I'm trying to find out info on the likely location and to comfirm the probable weight etc. I've also borrowed Colin's Ironmind pulling harness and have a couple of names ready to have a go - does anyone else fancy a chance?? Let me know. |

Now you're boring us
|
Are you doing it with a rope assist? If so I wouldn't be worried about getting it pulled. Just don't try doing it uphill! |

Mobster would there be an insurance probem with me doing this pull just like there was at the Severn Valley comp (age related)? if there isn't i would love to have a go. Plenty of time to arrange a train up. btw, i have pulled a 10000kilo truck before when i weighed 14stone. 30m in 45secs. :peace |

I thought about that and if need be yes. We have Colin's Harness and we have plenty of rope. Kong I'm quite happy as this isn't a competition and there are no prizes (maybe a cold drink from the group) so feel free to come on down. I'm as keen to get a few faces showing up for the kids as, once again, it puts strongman in a very good light. I'm hoping the local newspaper will do something as well. One thing I want to know more about is the venue as I remember the problems Dave Gauder had with his Concorde pull (first try was uphill and he passed out, second was downhill and it nearly caught up with him and finally they got it right). |

Just had another chat with the organizer and it will be held at school I've done a show at before and so I know the ground is tarmac and is level. I've asked him to find out the weight. He mentioned he'll be doing posters and leaflets (he did my mad monster one) and he also suggested that we might get a chance to have a go a week or so before at a station (ie: to see if we can move it). More when I have it. |

Just had another chat with my man wot is putting it together. It's a tender they use for school displays and events and so is not in active service and they can empty the water out if need be. We have asked for 2 dates for 'having a go' and it'll probably be over in Quedgely, Gloucester (there is a business park there). I've asked to give the school the once over so as to find the best spot and seek out an anchoring point if we need one. He also suggested two things: 1) the fire brigade need us to sign a waiver (as per most strongman comps) and 2) the kids will be getting sponsorship from their parents for the distance we cover while we have a go and the money will be used for hospital equipment for babies - so a good cause. Oh and they are having a family day so there will be a crowd

I agree

Sounds awesome- this type of stuff is fun. There used to be a charity event here of a similar nature- you were given a handicap based on the number of people in your group. I often thought that if they allowed a harness, I could probably manage to win it on that basis alone. Hope this goes over well guys. |

I've just double checked the dates for my next competition and I thought it was the 25th August. That would have had me travelling back on the 26th and at the school on the 27th. But the comp is on the 26th which means I doubt I'll be back in time, or if so it'll be close, to take part myself. I still intend on gathering the troops together so that the event goes ahead. All that said I also just noticed that I'm supposed to pay no later than the 29th of July my entry fee for the European Grip Championships... guess what todays date is! So I've emailed to ask if I can pay today. If not (which would be a real bummer) I'll be there for sure

To do trial run !!!! We tried to pull a firetruck last year (just to test) and we could not move it. It was a little heavier but still should have been doable. We thought our surface was level..but who knows. |

We tried out the harness tonight. Mike managed to move a car forward with the handbrake still on. I affixed the rope to our gates and managed to drag the car sideways - again with the brake on so we may well be ok. |

Back - phew. It's doable
We arrived at the fire brigade HQ a little after 2pm and their rep came out and walked us over to their fire safety tender. It's a 96 Leyland Daf which we think weighs in at about 12-13 tonnes. Having already set up the harness etc I went first. Trying it without the fixed rope and from what the guys said was a slight camber it wasn't budging. My feet slid on the floor and I was all over the place. The driver and lads said 'you were on the cusp' and I said 'the fuck I was ha ha'. So I had the engine move a few yards forward and we affixed the rope to a lamp post and I took the strain again. Off I went! I starts plowing along and was happy that it was moving. Scooter, at about 90 or so kilos, is the lighest (Alf and I are both 120+ kilos) changed to a pair of specialist shoes and once the strain was taken also got it shifting along. Finally up came Alf who asked the most questions and seemed the most doubtful but in the end seemed to move the quickest once he knew he could do it. We made sure to drop by the school and looked at the site again and have decided on a flat grassy area to the rear. If need be we'll take along our 3-feet metal spikes and anchor the rope to a 2 and a half ton transit but feel sure that it's gonna be a good day. As I was busy the camera stayed in my back but some photos were taken and as soon as we have them I'll copy and post 'em. |
