Champ Car is planning to review a physical altercation between Toronto's Paul Tracy and Alex Tagliani of Montreal that took place during Sunday's Grand Prix of San Jose.

Tracy, who was battling brake problems all day, slid into a runoff area on lap 52, then drove back on to the track and slammed into Tagliani.

Television cameras showed an irate Tagliani waiting to confront Tracy in pit lane. Tagliani, who was still wearing his helmet, grabbed Tracy with both hands and appeared to yell at his fellow Canadian.

Tagliani then walked away briefly before turning around to confront Tracy a second time.

Tracy, who was carrying his helmet, took exception as both men began throwing punches.

"We understand that this is a very competitive series and our athletes can get caught up in the heat of the moment but we do not condone this type of behaviour," Champ Car president Steve Johnson said in a statement.

"We will review this incident thoroughly and determine what needs to be done to make sure things like this do not happen in the future."

Accepts blame

While Tracy accepted the blame for the accident, he didn't appreciate Tagliani's persistent physical behaviour.

"I pulled right out in front of him," Tracy said, taking the blame for the accident. "He came up and confronted me. I said I was sorry, but he kept grabbing me and I told him to stop grabbing me. I had to defend myself."

Tagliani wouldn't say whether he yelled at Tracy, only admitting that he "couldn't believe" Tracy had pulled out in front of him the way he did.
