Top-seeded Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the Rogers Cup, dealing another blow to a tournament that has already seen the withdrawals of the biggest names in women's tennis.

Kim Clijsters of Belgium, who is ranked Number 2 in the world, now becomes the top seed in the women's hardcourt tournament that starts in Montreal on Monday.

Sharapova, the biggest draw in women's tennis and the number four ranked player in the world, said she was too exhausted to play.

"I'm deeply saddened to have to withdraw from the Rogers Cup," said Sharapova in a statement after losing 7-5 6-2 on Saturday to fellow Russian Elena Dementieva at the Los Angeles Open.

"Unfortunately, my body is very fatigued because of the extensive number of matches that I have played over a short period of time, and I don't feel that I can perform at the level required."

The Montreal event has now lost Sharapova, the third-ranking player, Justine Henin-Hardenne, Wimbledon champion Amelie Mauresmo and contenders Venus Williams and Mary Pierce.

In contrast, the men's tournament of the Rogers Cup held in Toronto during the past week featured top-ranked Roger Federer in the final and had very few withdrawals.

The packed schedule for women's tennis players has often led to withdrawals at the Rogers Cup.

The final grand slam tournament of the year, the U.S. Open, begins in two weeks.

But in reality, she knows that being so close to me she couldn't consentrate on the task at hand.
