For some reason I think of Samuelsson & Virtanen as being from a previous era. They were giants of the sport 5 years ago, but there is a new breed of strongmen that have come along and surpassed them in recent years. I'd love to see them do well, but I think their time has passed.

I tend to agree. It's kind of sad, but time marches on.

Good job Terry!

Today was the first day of the qualifying round at the 2006 MET-Rx World’s Strongest Man contest in Sanya, China, and while it was hot for everyone, some guys had a better day than others.

Some groups had two events today while others had one, and with even world travelers commenting on how extremely hot it is at the competition site, the weather could well end up playing a part in this year’s contest - any way you slice it, World’s Strongest Man requires good stamina and survival skills, so this year’s heat seems perfectly suited to the situation.

Although these are unofficial, here are the top standings at the end of the first day of qualifiers.

Mariusz Pudzianowski leads group one, followed by a three-way tie for second place: Arild Haugen, Don Pope and Mohammad Gharei. Jesse Marunde is the leader in group two, with Terry Hollands in second place. Group three is led by Janne Virtanen, with Darren Sadler in second place. Tarmo Mitt is the leader in group four, with Dominic Filiou and Boris Haraldsson tied for second place. In group five, Sebastian Wenta is in first place, and Slawomir Toczek is in second place.

The events are said to be extremely well designed and the contest is reported to be off to a silky-smooth start; the local hosts are winning continual praise for their efforts in supporting what is being described as an exceptional World’s Strongest Man contest.

Wish they could have tossed some points in there too to let us know how tight it is. Go Terry!

Good on Sadler early on. Wonder what the next couple of events are?

I still think a healthy Samuelson and Virtanen can be very dangerous.

Key word there is healthy. The older you get- or more appropriately, the more mileage you have- the tougher that becomes.

I agree-once a champion-you always have something others don't-Give samuelson a healthy back-he will kick ass-he wasn't given all those different championships for free.Virtanen sounds like he is in great shape-I hope all his injuries hold up-I've heard there isn't a nicer guy than he.

Sure, think there's a Wal-Mart he can pick one up at? That's mileage, dude. Nothing to do with heart, ability, or even strength.

It ain't over yet, but the ones bound for the final are really starting to distance themselves. So far, no real surprises though.

Looks like Dominic is also in last place in his heat, after three events (per Kevin Nee on Marunde's board).

The points are all still fairly close, though.

None of these results are official, but headlining today’s performances, Phil Pfister set a new world record in the Fingal’s Fingers, with a time reported at 32 seconds. This moved Mr. Pfister to second place overall in the group three, which is still led by Janne Virtanen - who continues to look impressive. Mariusz Pudzianowski banged out 17 reps in the car deadlift to maintain his lead in group one, and the young phenom Arild Haugen is in second place. Haugen, who is competing in his first World’s Strongest Man contest, is off to a tremendous start. Jesse Marunde, with a great performance on the Fingal’s Fingers, is in first place in group two, followed by Terry Hollands. The top two positions in group five remain unchanged from yesterday, with Sebastian Wenta in first place and Slawomir Toczek in second place.

Terry's just won the farmers event in his heat and leads Jesse by one point with one event to go.

Vidzis and Ostlund are on 3 and 4 points behind Terry (not sure in which order though).

Come on Terry!!!

Terry is on fire. He has prepared perfectly for these events. I can not beleive how fast he can move, and at 370 lbs bodyweight too!!! My heat was first to go in the farmers and I was chosen to go first in my group so I had no idea what to expect. They mess with the orders to make a more exciting TV program. Now I have to place well in the last event to make it to the finals. They dont want anyone to be able to relax and take an event off I guess.

231 lb Darren Sadler beat Phister in the yoke today!!! Phil had a horrible yoke walk. The car carry turned out to be much harder than anyone expected. Even Marius struggled with and even dropped it once. The course was uphill, on grass, and the car was bouncing all over the place.

Darren Sadler is really impressive. Everyone here thinks he is probably he best strongman here. He has got to be hands down the best 231 lber ever. The guy is literally beating some of the best heavy weights on the planet!!! He tied my time on the farmers walk too. He's the total package! Speed, limit strength, grip, and very skilled.

Thigpen is having a rough one. He's quite frustrated with a few placings that are below his expectations for himself.

Janne tore his calf on the farmers walk. He was on track to have the fastest time of the day too. He won the yoke with a fantastic run, and with Phil placing last on the yoke I thought for sure Janne was in the finals. Janne may try the last event tomorow, and if he is able to he might keep Phil out of the finals...

I'm really happy with my deadlift. I felt like I had a few more in the tank too, but I held back cause my hamstring was really hurting me.

This is from Jesse Marunde's board and posted by Jesse himself. Is Sadler for real? Man I'm glad he's gone up to the heavyweights!!! If Darren makes the final it will be an awesome accomplishment for a man of his size and weight. Terry sounds like he's having a brama too...it sucks that we can't see this live!

Congrats to Terry.

I'm happy to here that Virtanen is cruzing through.

Scott C. I think Jessen had the toughest Heat, when Mariusz is there, there's really only one spot to fight for.
