What can you say Phil delivered on his 2001 promise. The Mans worked hard and he deserves the title.

Well done once again to Terry, Getting better every year.

On a secondary note it's worth mentioning that this years comp seems to have been the best one in many years. So I think Jouko and svend deserve a mention for planning these events.

Congratulations to Phil! I really thought that Mariusz would win, and handily. Just the fact that he came back and destroyed so many events in the finals really shows that Phil was better overall.

I really hope that Svend and Jouko continue to help out with the contest. This year it was evident that they'd really tried to make the contest interesting, and hearken back to older styles of strongman.

I love the look of the stone press. It may not be a "real" rock that they're lifting, but I see this as being a great way to standardize the overhead stone lift and create some new records for it. I'd love to see this in more contests.

The car walk is very good to watch, and I really have no idea why it was excluded from so many recent WSMCs. If it's something visually appealing that TWI wants, this events provides it.

Overall, I think this year's WSMC will really help the sport progress. It was visually appealing, featured an extremely close race for first place, and two Americans placed in the top three.

So there are some downsides to this years contest. :azz

Congratulations to Phil! What an awesome performance.

Maybe if we're lucky, we'll see this in Canada. Someday.

Terry hope you don't mind me doing a copy and paste job of your cracking write up on this years comp.

Terrys comp review.

Right here goes my little write up from WSM (you'll all have to exuse the English it never has been one of my strong points)

Event 1 Carry and drag

Got off the coach for this first event and couldn't believe the heat, it took me about 30 secs to catch my breath. We got given the order in which we were going Raivis and Dave Ostlund were first and me Jesse and Gu were second which I thought was great because I knew Jesse would be pretty quick. Watched the first 2 go and Raivis completed the course and Dave didn't. We got called down and I just kept thinking to myself stick with Jesse on the stone carry and I'll catch him on the Drag. Whistle went and I saw Jesse just take the lead put my foot down and ran past him, at this point was just trying not to get excited, threw the stone in the sled and Dragged it back about 18m down the course Jesse started to catch me but by then I knew I had the win. Got the times back and I'd won my group.

2nd event Keg toss

Never done this event before so did a fair bit of practice in the yard, thought I'd cracked it, obviously not as I only managed 3 barrels out of the 10 which gave me 4th in my group, 2nd in the overall group score.

Day 2 event 3 deadlift

300 for reps, Raivis went out and did 11 so it was a good target, I did 12 but on the 12th didn't lower the bar so got the rep dissallowed, was really annoyed but this was enough to give me equal 1st as jesse and dave both got 8 and gu 0.

Fingals Fingers

Well didn't really know what to expect as the only time I did them was when I stopped at 4 the year before. Dave and Raivis went and both did all 5 me and Jesse went head-to-head he did them in 37 me in 46 (it took me 44 to do 4 last year) I got 3rd

Day 3 Farmers walk

It was those Anvils they use which are the most awkward farmers I've ever used, there was a little spin on this it was 35m but with 4 ramps going up hill. I went out 3rd if I remember correctly Jesse was 16.something Raivis was the same but slightly quicker I did them in 14.08 then Dave went and did them quicker than jesse but slower than Raivis. Was really pleased with this as I got the quickest time of everybody in all groups.

Day 4 Barrel loading through water

Knowing I only had to beat Gu was a weight off my mind in this event but I wanted to win the group so beating Jesse was what I was aiming for. anyway Raivis won, Dave 2nd me third and Jesse 4th well the only way Raivis could have gone through was for him to win and Jesse 4th so I felt a bit guilty toward Jesse but it was great to win my group.

Final Day 1

Deadlift

330kg for reps

Did 12 reps which was really happy about as it was heavier and I made sure not to drop the last rep got 4th on this

Powerstairs

Well never done this before but had always wanted to try it so was quite excited. 230kg weight 21 steps I came 6th which I was fairly pleased with as I was up against some of the best in the world and I beat some of them. This was a really brutal event as 7 out of the 10 of us ripped our hands open.

Overhead stone lift

Again a new event for me but had practised it in the yard and was pressing the 1st no problem. Went out to go and couldn't even get the first one. Had the worst cramp ever to the point where I couldn't even move my arm. I could hardly get off the medical bed before this event where I was so tired Not making excuses my conditioning just wasn't good enough (might have something to do with the 20 cigerettes a day I smoke).

Day 2

Fingal fingers

Knew I needed to be at my best on this went out and did 41 secs which was a massive pb as it was now only the 3rd time I'd done them. Got 4th place

Truck pull

Was expecting to win this got 3rd mariusz and phil just beat me and no-one finished it.

Day 3 Car walk

Again not done it before but my yoke is normally good and 450kgs is not a problem for me. I picked up no problem started walking and thought it would be no problem started trying to pick the speed up and couldn't started seeing stars so had to drop. My heart was pounding and they had to help me out of the car after having a load of oxygen. Got checked by the doc and my blood pressure had dropped quite serverly due to bad dehydration.

Stones

After drinking 7 litres of water I was out to finish the job. The only problem was the rain was absolutly terrible so knew it would be fun trying to lift stones in that weather. Basically got 6th only put 4 up as I just couldn't grip the stone (should have taken my tacky out to the platform) this was enough to move me up a place.

I was dissapointed with 7th as I knew if my conditioning was better and if I wasn't suffering with such bad dehydration (again not an excuse as I know it's my fault) I could've been higher.

One good thing I came back from the World's last year with a bad back and I'm fit and healthy so am hoping for a good winters training. I belive that if I get it right and my training leading up to next year is good there is no reason why I can't make the podium next time.

Thanks for the kind words everyone but the best is yet to come.

Awesome writeup, Terry and great job. That heat is a bitch and it really doesn't help a 170kg man in the slightest. More water next time!
