Steve's back went on the Squat and Toms knee went after a couple of lifts on the Silver Dollar Deadlift. |

First off thank you to the psma for putting this on today; It’s a thankless job promoting and they deserve praise for what they do. ![]() Well just got back, Took for ever as my knee kept playing up so had to stop and let it settle down before driving on. Lesson one therefore is take someone with you to comps so they can drive back if need be. Got their late, after getting myself lost yet again, so straight into the venue to weigh in and I was right on the 105kg mark so will need to loose some of the soft stuff for next year because I have a lot more of the good weight to add this winter. Coming into this competition I have been having a problem with my right knee. Getting up from a chair I would do so by putting all the weight on my left leg and so I did not expect much from the first event the Squat. However, The bar did not feel that heavy from the rack, It certainly did not feel anything like 220kg so I thought I might get away with my leg but it was not to be. I could not push with it plain and simple and trying to work by pushing from my left leg was never going to work. So I think it was 3 reps with one deducted I imagine for depth which is fair as I know I was trying to avoid the pain in my knee. On the 4th rep I forgot myself tried to squat as normal, knee twinged sharply and that was it, Mouse trapped. Second event was the log. IFSA spec 110kg. Pleased and disappointed with this, Pleased because since starting training for this comp my log as improved so much. 8 weeks ago when I got back into training I tested my max at 95kg; Now it’s a lot better, the first rep at the comp with 110kg felt real comfortable. Then the disappointing bit on the second rep I could not clean the thing, Could not believe it and never expected that part to be a problem. Felt good for possibly 3 presses if I could have cleaned the bloody thing. But that’s life and it’s my own fault. I have not been practicing the clean partly due to being over cautious to protect my knee in the lead up to this. What I have been doing in training is taking the log from a rack set at waist / lower chest height then pressing for reps so lesson learn’t here. Oh and one blatant bit of salesmanship I have to give full credit to this huge improvement in my log pressing to the IFSA log trainer. Third event was the 18” deadlift. Three lifts rising bar; I started cautious on this not knowing how it was going to feel. First weight asked for was 270kg which I knew I could pull with some ease. And sure enough 270kg went up as if the bar was empty, felt SO easy (perhaps due to the fact the bar was ‘bendy’) but on the way down something happen to my knee and I’m not even sure what in truth, pain shot down the inside of it. The 270kg felt so easy I think I would certainly have gone to 320kg on the next lift but I was concerned about my friggin knee so I wrapped it tight and went for just 300kg on the second rep to gauge how it was with the strapping on. Well the weight went up no problem although the knee did feel a little twinge but once again as I put the bar down the knee went into pain again. At this point I decided to drop out and not take a third lift. Not sure how bad my knee was but I can’t afford to blow it out. I have to work in a manual job and I can’t afford to lose weeks away from work. If it goes during a comp then that’s life and you have to accept it but it’s plain stupid to keep pushing it when you can feel something’s not right and getting steadily worse. All in all I’m real pleased with out things went today. I’m happy with what I’ve done these last 8 weeks , I certainly feel I have a good place to start from ready for next season. So my plan now is arrange a visit to a sports doc this week to see what the situation is then get on with some serious rehab work. Once done practice the friggin log cleans and start on a structured program to prepare properly for next season. Well done to everyone; especially Nick the grip BSM u105 2006, who it seems is also the king of the stones by beating the time Oli Thompson set on them same stones. I am going to have to come up to train and kick your arse in that Conans though Nick. ![]() Couple of point not really directly related; I think if were ever going to set records for the 18” deadlift we need to sort out the issues with the bar. A bar with a lot of give is going to allow a lot more to be lifted than a higher quality bar would permit so my suggestion would be to do all future lifts using a solid 2” bar. This will ensure there is no bar bend ever and thus every record attempt is done on a bar that feels the same for everyone in every comp. Just a thought. With it being on a axle you would have to allow straps and for the record in todays lifting I don’t think anyone failed a lift due to grip issues. |

Nick was superb today, Steady in the first three events then came into his own by wining the last three events to take the title on countback, Yes it was that close. Will did real well but he's to hard on himself. On the farmers hold the positions 2 - 4 were split by under 1 second and I think will took 4th place losing out on second by something like 0.5 seconds His log as improved loads but sadly the log's keep getting heavier and he just missed today, And when i say just missed i mean just missed he was all but locked out but lost his balance. He would have put up a 100kg log for reps no problem today. He pulled 355kg on the deadlift and just missed loading the 150kg stone. All in all Will did real well and is without doubt getting better each time I see him

The refs were damn strict today but in fareness they were the same with everyone and it was a national comp. The 2 reps i did with the log i held for a good 4-5 seconds each rep searching for the ref to see what he was waiting for,i was told although locked out they were wanted my head pushed through more than it was.I accept that as it was the same for the others. As well as Martin ,Frank Connolly also had 2 reps not counted on the log. It was great to see everyone and finaly put some faces to the names i talk to on here,Hollywoods brother for one. |
