How the fuck is gas cheaper in Ontario when I can walk out my door and stare at a refinery and there are no transportation costs to get it to the gas station across the street.

If I hear another person say Alberta is in a boom I will punch them in the face. No one I know is making more money because we are in a "boom". A handful of oil patch workers are making fat cash and everyone else gets gouged.

Boy, did that ever hit a nerve with me. I'm in Calgary. The cost of living here is horrendous. I'm struggling to keep my head above water (average salary here for my job is $62,000-$75,000). That's not a lot of money here. (If I didn't have an investment portfolio, I wouldn't have any extra money for vacations or emergencies.)

This is where rich people live in Calgary: Rich People in Calgary

This is where I live (some of these houses are really nice. Mine is your basic 3 bedroom home with attached garage -- no frills): Citadel NW

We have 10 times as many jobs as people to fill them. We're now fast-tracking Mexicans to come and work here.

Want downtown parking? You won't find any under $300 a month (if you want plug-ins for your car over the winter, it's more like $450/month). Underground heated parking is $600-800/month. In fact, Calgary is now more expensive than New York for parking (and just about everything else, too). It will cost you a minimum of $4 an hour on the street or in a pay parkade. That's if you can find any spots ...

As for the Alberta advantage, there is no Alberta advantage anymore :-( The rich here are getting richer by the second, and the 85% of the rest of us schmucks are being pushed into abject poverty.

yeah it is lovely when 62-75 grand and you get to scrape by. The other thing that is cranking me to no end is since everyone is buying the boom horseshit they feel they can up their prices on everything.

The province is in a boom, you can afford it. Like I said i know no one who is making more money yet prices are spiraling skyward.

The Alberta advantage is gone, it used to be we had a skilled work force and low cost of living so everyone was beating a path to this province to have stuff manufactured. Now it is going elsewhere as it costs too much.

Nobody is catching on too this fact and if it continues to go much longer companies in manufacturing are gonna start to go out of business and at that point if oil prices fall Alberta will be a desolate waste land.

Yep. All the super rich people are buying up property here like there's no tomorrow, and they keep driving the prices up. When people are willing to pay $800,000 for a lot with nothing on it ... what more can I say? And the recreational properties are going like hotcakes, thereby pushing the prices up. Canmore is ridiculous. An 837 sq ft apartment condo base price is $360,000.

Everywhere the prices keep going up here. And they can get away with it because there are enough people here who are willing to pay. But when the oil and gas bubble bursts, then what? Our properties will be worthless. Best to sell now while the going is good and move somewhere else (i.e., someplace cheaper).

I heard that junior welders are starting at $200,000/yr in Fort McMurray. Their accommodation is paid for. All they have to do is pay for food and clothing. I wish I was a welder :)

Maybe I'm just a little gloomy right now ... my BF lost his battle with cancer a few weeks ago (he went downhill really fast and it was hard to watch him become a skeleton of the man he once was); then a week later, a couple of my best friends got killed in a car accident, and now my mom's in the hospital. :bang But I'll be OK. One day at a time ... ;)

It's way past stupid now Aaron. Our economy qualifies as absurd.

It's a real sore spot with me, and have blogged about it endlessly.

like this morning, for example

I thank god every single day that we bought our house three years ago while we still could.

I know quite a few people who are living large, but who have short memories. When things slow down again (and it will, it always does), their million dollar mortgages and two leased Hummers are going to become a real liability.
