id just like to say that so far im not impressed with the reception ive had among the people who compete, organise and spectate this sport, i competed at a comp in april, where i met some real hostile assholes, who were clicky and it turned into a show case of the organiser and his boys, and when the real deal, terry hollands turned up, no one paid him the respect he deserves, i mean after all were just vauxhall conference, hes premiership league, all the locals turned in and froze out anyone who wasnt from there area, it was a fucking terrible experience, but that also goes for other organisations, i.e not being added to offical members lists, whats the use of fucking registering, cause all you are is making up the numbers, the censoring of topics, just so the friends run the show, prioritising members blogs, and being given half memberships so you cant upload pictures. some people always ask, why we havent got any number one strongmen or enough on the world stage [ no disrespect to terry ] well think about what some of you assholes are doing, then take the blame, i mean are any of you ever going to be w.s.m and how do you know if the athletes you dont support are the next marius, your grooming aint going no where, without including people who show grit determination and are as hungry as your pals down the gym, and some of you bitch about money and interest not being put into this sport, when some of you just take and keep taking and put nothing back

Happens sometime. Shows are orginized so the person running it, or his friends can win. |

Have you read the thread in the competition section? Might be of interest, as it pertains to putting more back into the support and building it from a SOLID grassroots level. Well-run shows, good people, lots of funding, good equipment, nice venues, etc. Looks like things could be on the way up in the UK, especially with people like Colin Anderson and Tom Jones working to improve things. Pretty much every time I've shown up to compete somewhere I've known no one there, and they're all warm, welcoming, friendly, and encouraging. In fact, I've made a lot of friendships that I hope will be longlasting, all because of the encouraging atmosphere of strongman and the Highland Games. |

Well if youre referring to the novice comp in bexhill (if youre not ignore this!) I was competing there too and I didnt find any bad attitudes of the sort youre describing at all! It was my first comp and, like you, im not from the area, didnt know anyone and I met some real sound blokes there. I thought it was well run and I didnt notice any clickiness at all. jon bowles offered advice and was shouting support for me and I dont know him from adam! My family were there to support me. And, although they were intimidated by all big lads who were there when they went in, by the end they had all commented on how friendly everyone was. Maybe you saw some stuff that I didnt but I thought it was a relaxed and friendly atmosphere and I cant wait for the next one! |

Sorry that you feel that way but i gotta say that what your saying it bollocks.Every comp i've done has generally been along the south coast and everyone of the 14 comps i've done has been great and so has the other athletes in supporting each other and so have the organisers.Sure you get the odd athlete thats a little reserved but its competition day so its to be expected. As long as your giving it your all, then you'll get respect from everyone. Now if we are talking about the Bexhill first timers comp then you have to appreciate that a lot of the guy's who are new in the sport were probably supprised and in awe to see big Terry Hollands there, and the last thing they probably think they should do is go and talk to him.Not that the big friendly fella would mind, far from it.I spotted the British Legend Bill Pittuck there as soon as i walked in but it took me a good hour to gee myself up to go and talk to him and i'm a 36 year old who's been in the sport a few years, get my point. I may be tottally wrong but if your who i think you are then you pulled out after the 3rd event and then as far as i was told, fucked off.The events you did do,you deffinately didn't give it your all, that was oblvious to everyone. So looking back were a lot of the people competing a bit quiet and nervous being it their first show, probably. Was everyone helping out there supporting ALL the athletes, deffinately cause i was. Did you get full respect for your half hearted efforts, probably not. I'm looking to get into a new sport and the one thing i'm slightly concerned about is that its not gonna have the same great supportive friendly atmosphere that we have in strongman. So for fuck sake don't come on here moaning about your first comp you've ever done, slagging off these so called unsupportive people who have put on a comp for you. After all if there putting these shows on then they want them to be good, don't they? |

If this is about Jon's novice comp in Bexhill then I think you are waaaay off the mark. What is all this about showing a "lack of respect" to Terry? What were we supposed to do? Form a guard of honour at the doorway when he walks in and scatter rose petals for him to walk on? Bill Pittuck was there as well, as was Oli Thompson, should we have slaughtered a dozen virgins in their honour or something? As for the contest being a bit "clicky"... I'm sorry you felt like that. I made time to talk to you before the contest and make you feel welcome, even though I was busy getting stuff ready. Perhaps you would have liked the rose petal treatment as well? Fact is though that that contest was originally going to be a "closed" contest just for people from Physiques Gym. Jon made it a novice contest and let other people compete as there is a shortage of novice contests. As it was originally planned as a "Gym" contest, about 70% of the competitors were from the same gym, and have known each other, trained together, and gone out on the piss togther, for years. So you can hardly be surprised if they spent alot of time talking to each other, rather than a bloke they had never met before, especially since you went home after a couple of events in a huff! If you were serious about sportsmanship and learning about strongman, maybe you would have hung around until the end, picked up a few tips, and congratulated the winner. Seemed to me that you were a bit of an internet wannabe, who turned up at a novice contest, found out you were not very strong, and went home after a couple of events looking for something to blame, rather than stick around trying to learn..... |

I can think of better things to do than 'slaughter' them, unless this is some new slang I am unfamiliar with. Could be, I'm old. Straight from the deadlift to your car, huh Wayne? You should have stuck it out, honored your commitment to yourself at least. Maybe you should try again... Or not. Up to you. |

Personaly if it was me. I'd have gone from the deadlift to the booze area, got totaly smashed, then made a ass of myself. That would have showed them. Oh, i'd have de virginized the dead virgins too. |

He's not the first guy to go to a contest and get humbled by the events though. The difference is that the people who have what it takes stick it out and learn from it, not fuck off home. |

Oh and another thing you may have overlooked Wayne.... Strongman is a small sport, you tend to see the same faces at most of the contests you go to. So calling the people you met at one contest "real hostile assholes" on the internet is perhaps not the best way of ensuring a warm walcome at your next contest.....

I just got my girlfriend 2 read this. She is shy but has never felt intimidated or felt that people have been hostile 2her. and i just love 99%of the strongman clang. sure we all wana beat each other but only if every one is 100%. i remember my first comp, it was a bit intimidating at first but as soon as you get stuck in and give 100% people will respect you weather your Terry Hollands or a new novice. Quit your jibber jabber and get some nuts |
