I guess I swing both ways...I know where my monkey is going
|
I've got a long-standing SI Joint problem, and I seem to have buggered it again on the weekend. I'm wondering whether or not there are any specific exercises I can do to get back at it quickly. I'm stretching like the dickens and that helps, but other than going for ART every few days, I can't think of anything else that might give me more effective relief. I've been doing core exercises like crazy, too. And here I thought I'd be able to do OH squats in another week. I never factored in my other war wounds

I feel your pain. I would suggest doing what I still haven't if you've not already, see a chiro. |

Yeah, I went to my chiro this morning. He has already helped get the joint moving again, but I think this one will take a couple of days to settle down. I've been stretching every 30 minutes because my muscles are seizing up so quickly. I hate getting old

OK. It sounds as though I'll have to start coordinating my workouts with my chiro, massage therapist, sports doctor and trainer now. Jeez. I'm completely FUBAR. If anybody had told me I was going to be like this when I got older, I would have had a lot more fun in my 20s and 30s. All I seem to do now is rotate my old war wounds. One goes away, and another one flares up. I think my body is finally rejecting itself

Welcome to my life. The trick is to enjoy training around whatever you can/can't do at any given moment.
Again, just like me, minus the trainer. The good news is all that shit extends your warranty. |

You got it!!! I really need to work out. I get depressed when I can't work out. As for having a trainer, he used to play football, so he "gets it". He's had injuries, and knows a lot about rehab. He also knows how hard to push and when to back off. He reads my body well. This is a good thing for me
Jeff, unfortunately, I think I'm already well into the extended warranty ![]() I think aging sucks

Hey Oberland, Send me your email address and I'll help you out. I had a terrible SI problem 8 years ago and it stayed with me until '03 (once I figured out EXACTLY what was wrong). I think/hope I might be able to help you. Dennis |

Dennis, I sent you my email addy, but I agree with the guys here that it would be a lot more beneficial if you could post the info in the rehab section. Now that I'm actually thinking, this topic really should have gone into the rehab section ... |

You could always come up to Edmonton and see Don at Peak sport therapy He is particularly good at mobilizing the si joint. A large part of the clinics clientel is gymnasts which are si joint problems defined. After Don you see me for a general low back, glute, hamstring deep tissue massage. We have done this to a couple of clients, this 2 pronged attack and it is quite effective. The other thing you have to figure out is what is causing the issue. Si joint problems do not just happen, a fall on your ass may have precipitated it, 3rd trimester pregnacy definantly does it, glute medius may have stopped firing so piriformis is pulling hard or for whatever reason you nervous system has adopted a muscle firing pattern that is causing your issue. |

That actually sounds like a good idea
I've been meaning to get up to the Chuk for awhile to visit family, so I could kill two birds with one stone. How far in advance do I have to book? Just so you know, I have 6 lumbar vertebrae (and an L4-L5 herniation, which has never bothered me) and a partially developed S1 (which has never bothered me either), so I don't think that's the issue here. I'm not sure what precipitated this. And I'm an MT's nightmare. My body is like a spring that has been wound up way too tightly, despite the fact I'm really flexible. So BOS, when I start reciting the names of the prophets and moaning obscenities, you'll know your deep tissue massage is hitting all the right spots ;) |

depending on the schedules it could be as soon as the next day, you would have to contact Don and he could set up the dual appointments as he is a little harder to get to see. E mail him a check it out,let him know your symptoms and we can go from there. and by the way i have a client that routinely punches me and then cries like a wee girl. He keeps coming back though |

I fell on my ass so many times in gymnastics, I lost count. But that was a very long time ago. No pregnancies. Piriformis seems good -- no nerve issues there. Don't think my G Medius has stopped firing -- I seem to be able to get a decent enough flex on both anterior and posterior fibers when I move my leg in various angles sideways and backwards, but it's probably really tight (as usual). How would I know whether everything in there is firing properly? Is that your job to determine that? I see my chiro again tomorrow. His specialty is shoulders because he worked for the Canadian Swim Team for 10 years. I'll ask him and see what kind of answer I get. If I don't like the answer, I'll come up and see Don and yourself for some REAL punishment

hmmm you were a gymnast for years eh. I am gonna assume that you have the massive anterior pelvic tilt that all gymnast seem to get which means your hip flexors would be extremely taut. This is speculation on my part but if that is the case that can reek havoc with lumbar spine. Unfortunately it is an innate condition with any power sport, look at any sprinter, massive lordotic curve in the lumbar region and a set of glutes that one could park their car on. This condition is also exacerbated if you have a penchant for wearing high heels. Has any one proscribed the Mckenzie exercise to you? Mckenzie they can work wonder for Low back pain and greasing bulging discs back into place, the also stretch the hip flexors |

You can only park a very small car on my ass now ![]() I didn't do gymnastics for that long ... only 3 years. I did ballet for 12 years, and they tell you to squeeze your butt cheeks together all the time, so I tend to tuck my pelvic girdle forward. That gymnastics stance was alien to me, and I never really got the hang of it. But I still have a bubble butt. I did sprint in high school and love sprinting (I'm not a distance runner at all). I used to wear high heels (yep, I just love 'em!), but I've given up all style for comfort over the past 5 years ;) I only wear high heels when I go out at night. Aaron, this might give you an idea to the curvature I've got: When I'm lying down, I can only push the small of my back into the floor when my knees are bent towards my chest at a 45 degree angle. When my legs are bent at 90 degrees, my lumbar still isn't touching the floor. I have to bring my head and chest up like I'm doing crunches in order to feel the floor with my lumbar vertebrae. So I guess the curvature is quite pronounced, although I thought everybody had the same trouble I did ... I've never heard of the McKenzie Extension. So I'll give it a try Aaron, thank you very, very much. I'll let you know how this works out. Hugs to all who offered me their advice ;) |

wow 45 degrees towards the chest, the majority can get the lumbar spine to the floor with moving the legs up into the sit up position. As for the descripton of the mckenzie exercises, they are myriad variation, I just picked the first one i found that had pics and an explanation. I can see the reasoning to get glute medius to fire and pehaps multifidis also. |

My fucking chiro is fired. I'm in worse shape now than when I walked into his office today after work. My spinae erectors and just about everything else surrounding my pelvic girdle are in spasm right now because of an "adjustment". Not an SI adjustment. OOOOOOOOOOOH NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. He decided to do an L4-L5 adjustment and torqued on my body like I was twice his size. I told him I've got an extra lumbar vertebrae and an L4-L5 herniation, but apparently he wasn't listening. The second he did it, every muscle in my lower back decided to resist. He tried doing ART on me, but eventually gave up and said "damned dancers and their flexibility -- don't you feel any stretch or relief at all?". He couldn't stop the spasm because his ART was useless. Personally, I don't think his hands were strong enough to do it. It felt like he had his knee pushing into my back to be honest with you. Still totally ineffective. When I asked about my SI issue, he said "you probably have arthritis in your SI joint because there's no reason that it should keep doing this". WRONG ANSWER JACK!!!!! So now I'm back to where I was before -- stretching myself out every 10 minutes, walking like I'm 90 years old, and sucking back anti-inflammatories like gummy bears. It feels like there is a gremlin in my lower back with a blow torch. It's about 350 degrees down there ... I think I could fry an egg on my lower back. I'm super pissed. Once my back settles down again (which will probably take another week), I'll be coming up to Edmonton to see what Don and Aaron can do for me. I'll be going to my MT tomorrow morning to see what he can do for me. Hopefully, I can get some degree of relief for the weekend. Did I say how pissed off I am? I've still got landscaping to do. This weekend is the last weekend I can get my cedar in, and I can't do it because of some dumb-assed chiro that doesn't pay attention and thinks I'm 18 years old and have a structurally sound spine. Fucking idiot. ASSHOLE. I'm never going back to him. I'm soooooooooooooo mad. |

Couldn't sleep last night because of the pain and it's feeling even worse today. I've got purple, blue and black bruises all over the left side of my pelvic area radiating out from where my SI joint is. I couldn't get into my car to drive to my MT appt this morning. I look like I'm auditioning for Quest for Fire II. I took some Meloxicam last night, but it didn't seem to help, so now I'm taking some Percocet, which is also doing diddly squat at this point in time, but maybe I just need to take a couple more (chasing pain is much harder than controlling it). I've also called my GP to phone in a prescription for prednisone and I'm waiting for that to be delivered. You could still fry an egg on my back it's so freaking hot. I really, really wanted to spend the long weekend curled up in a fetal ball |
