black and blue?
hope you do not have a tear
if this does not settle down within a week you maybe looking at 5 to 6 weeks, the usual time that it takes injuries like this to settle down
i hope i am wrong though you did say the chiro put the boots too you whilst preforming ART so that could of resulted in the bruising

Yeah, he put the boots to me and when I called him today and told him what shape I was in, he felt really bad. He even contacted my regular chiro (who has had to take a leave of absence due to family matters), and get some insight into his style of treatment.

The good news is I'm feeling a little better now, Aaron :) I sucked back another percocet and I'll take a prednisone closer to bed time.

Sudden and twisting movements are the ones that have my back screaming and feeling really hot inside. I have to do everything VERY slowly.

I'm really hoping this is not a tear, but my back is quite swollen, bruised, and therefore, really tender to the touch. I've been icing it every couple of hours or so (which is a double edged sword, because although it's good for the swelling, it makes my muscles seize up). My ROM bending forward is really good -- no trouble at all, perfectly normal. But it's not so good doing anything else right now.

I made another appointment to see my MT next Wednesday night.

Aaron, other than that, I don't think there's much more I can do. If there is, please let me know.

Sean, I'll try to get down to Shouldice Park tomorrow to watch the games :) I read the website, and there's a ton of stuff going on down there tomorrow!!!

Aaron, I have not contacted Don yet because I wanted to see my doctor first before going ahead with any further treatment. I'm still taking 6-8 percocet a day to keep the pain manageable. I'm incapable of driving myself anywhere.

My doctor is unsure as to what is causing the SI Joint pain and improper functioning, although he did mention that I had obviously torn something. He did not want to speculate given my history. And he had no answer as to why my left leg goes numb when I lie down (but only to the knee).

The good news is he has booked me for a full lumbar MRI and an SI joint MRI next week. The bad news is it will take me 45 minutes to get there :P

If you have a tear manual therapy is contraindicated on the site till it heals, some flushing work can be done above the site but honestly that wil not do much.

Find out and then go from there

I already cancelled my appt with the MT yesterday. It's way too tender for anybody to do much of anything with at this point in time.

Thanks so much for your help, Aaron. You da man :)

Geez I'm sorry to hear that Hanne. Sounds like you might have a small tear in the region. Have you seen a Physiotherapist? They can use ultrasound and shock therapy and set you up with some small exercises to rehab the region.

Thanks Jesse :) (BTW, I'm not Hanne).

How is your bicep doing? I hope it's feeling much better.

Funny you should mention that ... I'm seeing my PT this evening after work :) I'm sure I'll get a little ultrasound and some electrotherapy together with a list of rehab exercises ;)

My back felt a lot better after getting ultrasound :)

My PT figures that I do have a muscle tear, but she thinks the real reason behind my issues is that my multifidi have not been firing propertly for years, hence the SI joint issue/muscle tear.

She assumed that what has most likely happened to me is that my larger muscle groups had completely taken over for everything else over a long period of time, thereby making my lumbar/SI area extremely tight and prone to injury. Everything is pretty much off kilter.

I go at 7:00pm on Wednesday night for my MRI, so I should have the results by Friday.

Thank God you guys have a whole rehab section devoted exclusively to the multifidus :)

You might want to consider a new therapist.

Sorry Maureen, damnit I always get names mixed up... espacially in the last month or so.

Haha no not that Jeff. They tie these suction cups that deliver a small voltage to the area. They did this to my calf and the physiotherapist allowed me to manage the voltage since my calf is so thick. I ended up putting too much and my calf started to spasm.

Don't worry about it, Jesse. I have brain farts all the time :) Faces I remember. Names ... I'm not so good at. I only have so many brain cells to devote to names. Apparently, I used them all up years ago :D

So how is your bicep coming along anyway?

still gonna make the trip up once you heal, there will be some scar tissue that will need to be mobilized so you do not develop weird gait patterns

then I can stalk you in real life muwahahahaha cough cough ack

I already walk like Quasimoto, so I'm not sure you'd notice the weird gait, Aaron ... :lol

I had a massage on Tuesday night because I couldn't stand my body anymore. He worked on my hip flexors/glutes for about 40 minutes, and then he finished off with my delts because they have been bothering me, too (they are tight -- no big surprise there). He said my pecs are probably really tight, too, but he ran out of time, so he said he'll do those next week.

The delts and biceps were tough work for him, and I'm still feeling it. I didn't have any pain when he was working on my glutes, and things are feeling really good in there. Maybe I didn't even have a tear ... maybe I'm just a baby and it was only really bruised.

Aaron, when do you think I should come up? I think I'll forego the chiropractic adjustment and just get the massage. Soft tissue manipulation seems to be working better for me right now. It will be nice to finally meet you ... albeit in a pretty vulnerable state :P

e-mail Don dmadra@peaksporttherapy.ca and give hin the particulars of your situation, he is the one who has to make the call as mobilising an acute injury is bad news.

Tell him you have been speaking to me and we can get it all hammered out

regards Aaron

It's only gay if you smile during the reach-around.
Hi Oberland,
I'm glad to hear that you've discovered exactly what the problem is/was. The advice that i was going to give you wouldn't have helped you because (now that you know what injury is) had nothing to do with the rehab I would've suggested.
I hope you get better soon. How the heck did you tear it anyhow????

Dennis

I didn't tear it. If it is, in fact, torn, it was the chiropractor when he made a brutal lumbar adjustment on me. I'm not sure it's really his fault ... it must have been ready to go if that's all it took to do it.

When I get my MRI results, I'll know what's going on in there :)

My MRI results came in, and the doctor faxed to me (thank goodness).

Reader's Digest version:

L6-S1 disc narrowing.
S1 spina bifida occulta.
L5-L6 moderate diffuse disc bulge.
L6-S1 small disc herniation. Right posterolateral component abutting right S1 nerve root. Mild degenerative facet joint changes. Foramina are unaffected.

R SI Joint moderate narrowing.
L SI Joint moderate narrowing.

Soft tissue unremarkable.

So both my SI joints are the same. That's good news. No soft tissue tears. That's also good news :)

Now I'm just wondering what the black bruise was from. Maybe the brutal ART. I've never bruised on my back from ART before, though. My back was really hurting. I must be a wimp.

So from the looks of this, my SI joint issues are 100% mechanical.

I'd like to make it up sooner rather than later, Aaron.

After speaking with Don and getting your written feedback, I think you guys are the ones who I really need to be seeing to get my problem fixed.
