yoke is a classic SM event and should be in there IMO

I disagree. The yoke, for athletes is a cool event but BORING as shit to watch. Grab a MASSIVE stone (husafell style and have guys walk with it....or pick up a fridge in their bare hands....then, everyone in the audiance can relate that the shit is heavy.

I think the idea of the crowd not relating to an event is true in most strongman comps ie, WSM . But I don't think it applies to the Arnolds. The majority of people watching the Arnolds tend to really know the sport and understand how heavy the stones or the yoke really are.

k2karakoram has a good point about throws: they are significantly height-dependant (though 2 of the best shotputters in the US - Hoffa and Nelson - are not tall, regarding the standard of their sport). A throw would be a gift to Virastyuk and to others with OL background.

Maybe, given how small they seem to look in reality, we could have a bodybuilder toss. That would be fun to watch.

I think that the idea of the stone carry has merit, and I agree that the events should be chosen in a way to minimize (it's impossible to eliminate) height dependance.

About alternating events in even and odd years, being a big fan of the basic lifts, I can certainly relate to k2karakoram's suggestion, but I think the organizers would never go for it, partly due to the reasons mentioned.
So maybe a middle ground would be, instead of specifically alternating the events according to the years, to keep a basic core of events (stones, hummer, axle) every year and alternate the other 3 and possibly adding 1 or 2 more, always making sure that a squat, press and pull are present in every year.
For example, one year we might have (in addition to the staples) a squat, a frame carry and very heavy power stairs.
The following year we could have a front squat, a stone/fridge/tree/whatever carry,
and a heavy dumbell like they use now, or a very heavy bench for reps.

I understand what Garrick says about it being difficult to extend the contest for one more day, but I still think it is doable, and I think that the athletes would go for it. These are, after all, the world's strongest men. Should that happen, a possible arrangment for the events would be 3+3+2, and for the two extra exercises one could alternate between yokes and tires or such for one of the slots, and a pull or press variation, depending on the choice of the previous events.

I really think the Arnold must have a RAW squat, but I don't like the Paul Anderson contraption because, as pointed, it can be depend a lot on height; I would just choose a normal barbell. As Viking Power said, many of the people watching have a sense for the events and for the nature of the efforts and would probably appreciate watching a plain old squat, with no wonder-suits.

I dont really think watching the athletes squat on a normal barbell for max or reps as an event would be entertaining at all. All the best events at the arnolds have an iconic bit of equipment - the apollons axle, the circus dumbell, the timber frame and the hummer tyre barbell. Thats part of its success IMO. If there were to be a squat I think it would have to be a giant axle or something similarly impressive.

when I think of the best events to choose I am not thinking one bit
about "entertainment" value at all but just soley in terms of what
events would be the best measure of overall strength. Call me
a Purist. Guilty as charged.

If you were not interested in the least about the entertainment side of a comp then even you wouldn't have ever watched one single strongman comp....why? TOO BLOODY BORING!!!!
You have to include some sort of entertainment value, emotion, athleticism, explosive events, brute strength events.....all of these combined produce a hell of a good show.

well funny you should say that because I really don't watch WSM anymore (i'll watch some clips here and there) because I really don't have much interest in the events most deem "entertaining" events and suspect that will continue to be my attitude until I see the contest becoming heavier and more like the arnold. I would rather watch a heavy max squat or max deadlift or max backlift or something along those lines rather than medley for example. To the extent I have enjoyed watching WSM its been when its been heavy and less about how mobile an athlete is.

On the other hand if I could see a comp on TV thats more like the Arnold, where it really is a heavy contest then I would be more motivated to see it because I think the totality of events at the arnold are the best measure of true strength put together in any contest that I have seen.

I suppose you could counter that I at least find those heavy events "entertaining"? Well maybe but the point is not in the usual way most seem
to define "entertaining" in strongman contests.

Besides my statement was specifically in the context of events for the Arnold which is the defacto heavy strongman contest out there.

Gotta disgree with you there. Crowd always told me they love the yoke. Of course I always made the event very dynamic! :azz
