Well, by my cals, that leaves Poundstone and The Big Z level on 22.5 points with Benny in 3rd with 20. Poundstone could win this, what a couple of months that'd be beating Pudz and then the Big Z!!! The yoke will probably be the deciding event as I expect Poundstone to match Savikas on the Atlas Stone and Axle. Whoa, tomorrow's certainly gonna be interesting. |

Unreal competition... Derek is sick (has been pretty badly sick for about 2 weeks now, is coughing all the time..) and has a slightly torn pec ( very painful and can barely raise his arm..), he lost some weight last week and is in at about 308lbs... Derek would have gotten the WR on the Timber but dropped a few seconds after picking it up when the front hit the ramp. He picked it back up pretty quickly..but all in all lost about 4 -5 seconds. He screamed up the ramp after that initial drop and rammed the Timbers into the end of the ramp wall screaming and chanting and holding onto it while stopped for about 5 more seconds...made the Timbers look like they were filled with helium.. really an incredible site I must say.. They Dumbbell was the same way..Derek had no idea what rep he was on...just kept going and going like his mind was in a distant place or like he was insane or something..wound of with almost 10 reps but they only gave him 9 (all one arm!)....and he did them all with his weak arm...because his right arm and pec muscle hurt too much...due to the minor tear he suffered while benching 485 last weekend... The DL, Derek got 911 and 1/2, missed the 955 and kinda tweaked his back a little..he didn't really even have to attempt the 955 because everyone ahead of him was attempting more weight...so, oh well.. He is tied with Zydrunas for the lead with 22.5 points. Standings official Derek Poundstone 22.5 Zydrunas Savickas 22.5 Andrus Murumets 20.5 Benedikt Magnusson 20 Mikhail Koklyaev 17.5 Phil Pfister 15 Oleksander Pekanov 14 Van Hatfield 12.5 Brian Siders 11 Vasyl Virastyuk 8.5 ( did not do the Deadlift due to injury) |

Looks an incredible contest with amazing athletes. Shame it's not live on tv, but it was great watching that youtube clip. I suppose any of those top 4 could take it, and will probably figure in the top 3 now. It maybe all depends on mistakes now. When it's like this it's very exciting. David |

Looking forward to seeing the deadlift event. Every year they lift more and I can see Z going after Bennys record next year. |

As has been said, some awesome results so far, with more to come I am sure. The strength-in-depth from this field is equally impressive. |

I would have said yes until I read about how bad his pec is. Well I'd expect him to finish within a point or 2 in that event, thus keeping well in contention. I think Derek will do whatever's necessary to win if he's in a position to do so after the yoke, ie if he's less than a point behind Savikas. He's got that bullish mentality to just keep going until the final whistle. However if Derek's more than a couple of point behind Savikas going into the last event and he's having real trouble overhead. I'd hope he'd pull out, no point doing yourself an injury that could cost him a year's worth of rehab. |

Firstly I love the f**king Arnolds just wish terry and felix were there, would love to see felix do the deadlift ! anyone who has ever said that the split is good for the sport is talking absolute shite, i think sometimes people forget about andrus, big z, vasil, kokleave (sp), we need these guys to tell IFSA that they are going to WSM whether they like it or not ! Secondly I hope Derek Pounstone gets a second place and then tells everyone on marunde muscle to fuck off, they never shut up about the guy now, last year they never even spoke about him, what a bunch of two faced arse licking cunts they all are. |

Some info courtesy of the good folk at PLSE: # Official results from Day 1: http://www.russia-strongman.ru/results/arnold2008.htm [note that there is one error in the protocol: Poundstone lifted the dumbell with the left arm, not with the right one] # Pfister made 8 reps on the dumbell lift, but the lockout (fixation of the weight) on a couple of those reps was debatable... # Vasil', Mikhail, Savickas and Murumets are convinced that the dumbell did not weigh 92kg; according to them, it felt no heavier than 80kg... # Koklyaev had an injury on the knee from Russian championship's recent round and this, among other factors, manifested itself on the first event. # Vasil' abandoned the competition after the dumbell, due to back problems. Some comments from me: (just my opinions) - Hatfield, Pfister and Siders are doing as expected. Poundstone is a surprise, I did not expect him to do this well. - Magnusson's best events are past him now, and he will probably go down in the classification today. Still, congrats on the impressive 500kg hummer deadlift. Z will probably go after that some time later. - Sick or not, even if he was healthy as a horse, there is no way in hell Poundstone can even remotely match Z on the remaining events. Nor can Koklyaev or Murumets, probably. In my view, Z has the contest practically won. But we will see... |

Makes sense as for so many people to go over the 6 reps that won it last year. Vasyl may have had a 7th rep in him last year, if he'd not played to the crowd after the 6th. But for so many to go for 8 or 9, make it seem that a lighter 'bell was used. |
