Winner qualifier for World strongest man

Friday is the “open qualifying competition: any American athlete who is healthy and successfully completes the entry process may show up and compete. As part of completing an entry package, a $250 entry fee is required. All athletes will be drug tested. Prize Monkey will be paid after drug screen results. Athlete will forfeit prize Monkey if athlete flunks drug test. Testing will be conducted by USAPL to USAPL anti-doping standards.”

“The top ten athletes from Friday then compete in Saturday and Sunday’s televised finals,” which will be broadcast by ESPN2 on July 13. Total prize Monkey is US$50,000 - it starts at $10,000 for first place and goes down to $1,000 for tenth place.”

“The events for the contest are very subject to change and are based on the needs of our sponsors, etc. Here is a tentative list.

Friday: Log Clean and Press for reps, Conan’s Wheel, Farmer’s Walk, Truck Pull

Saturday: Keg Throw, Atlas Stones, Car Walk

Sunday: Hand Over Hand Rope Pull, Pressing Medley, Deadlift for Reps”

Events look like events that have been in resent WSM, a good idea. Drug test is a dumb idea.

It looks like a good mix of events and a good purse. I haven't trained Conan's in awhile so I'll have to knock the rust off if I'm gonna compete well.

That comp as a lot to offer. Good purse, good tv exposure open to all and a path to wsm for the winner.

Phils done well pulling all that together

It's only gay if you smile during the reach-around.
To me, I've never cared if an event is drug tested or not, I'll pass either way, however I think Phil (correct me if I'm wrong) but I think Phil is attempting to prove a point to certain top guys. And that point is, if there is a drug test and guys compete against him naturally, he believes he'll beat them.

Just a guess as to what he's thinking....who knows....I could be miles off.

Phil's trying to get WSM in West Virginia, USA for 2009. 2008 will not be in USA.

West Virginia's state motto used to be "Almost Heaven"... now it is "Open for Business". The state is very willing to give nice tax breaks and other incentives in order to get good business into the depressed state. The governor probably sees WSM as a great way to showcase his state on national TV and to get more tourism.
I'm sure Phil is having an easy time getting funding for whatever he wants. He is a celebrity in WV.

Phil Pfister told IronMind that he will not be competing in the contest, so there is one less two-meter tall, 155-kg body to have to overcome in the quest to claim the title, pick up the Monkey and gain an invitation to World’s Strongest Man.

You know...I just skimmed over the rules, but I didn't see anything that stated you had to be American to compete. Lots of other stuff, but nothing about residency.

Maybe some of the better Canadians should pony up $250 and make the trip...

Based on that, you can't tell your wife and kids whether or not you won until it's on ESPN. But, they couldn't possibly make the fans all sign waivers, so WTF?
I was going to contact them for clarification, but the only contact info on the site is the address to send the entry in.
Is this just some template agreement, or do they really mean it?

It's great that it's going to be on ESPN, but so far it doesn't look very athlete-friendly.

This is very similar to the TWI WSM contract. I think this contract is a scaled down/modified version of it. I'm sure the results will still be on Ironmind and other various websites.

I think they're more concerned with giving away results to the general media.
