This years SSM is taking place at the Nevis Centre in Fort William this Saturday [3rd May]. Anyone coming to watch? I qualified in Feburary for it, became the youngest to ever qualify and am well up for it! Hit a 270k squat last Wednesday with wraps only, felt like 280k was there too. Im so much fitter since the qualifiers and stronger too. Hopefully Ill make a big impact and win best newcomer aswell. Events are: -120k log for reps from floor -cage squat; 240k to 330k -brick deadlift; 240k opener going up in 15k increments -car roll; approx 700k -hercules hold; 150k per hand -medley; washing machine 20m into high side of skip, 120k bottle 15m, 150k sandbag 10m, 150k chain 5m; last three are loaded into low side of the skip -truck pull -stones; 110k to 160k onto whisky casks 4 go through to BSM and 12 guys compete. |

You've done great to get there on your first attempt Ken and i'm sure you're gonna make a big impression on the day, your fitness should work out in your favour over these 8 events. Anyone considering traveling up for this will not be disapointed,Lewis MacLean has put together a real first class professional show. It's mostly indoors, all seated, easy to find, right in the centre of Fort William, tickets available from the Nevis Centre. This is same venue the team comp won by Terry and Darren was at. |

I really messed up yesterday and am really disappointed in my performance. Even so, it was a privalige to compete at that level and also a massive accomplishment to be the youngest to ever compete in SSM. Here my write up: Log Press Logs felt really good. First two reps were great, but then I couldn't catch my breath after the clean with the weight on the chest. Ended up with two reps, but if my fitness was better I reckon four was there for sure. Truck Pull Started off pretty good and I felt like I was getting some speed up. Lost all strength in my arms and could hardly even hold the rope, think that the rehband elbows maybe cut off the blood supply a bit. Slowed down as I hit the hump in the middle of the course and then I was just trying to use my BW to keep it moving. Ended up with around 13m. Medley Washing machine was easy, then the farmer was fine to duck walk in, but I messed around trying to load it eventually got it up but not as fast as I would have liked. Then I couldn't get a grip of the sandbag, but with 10s left I had the idea to sort of duck walk it in and got it a couple of feet before the time ran out. Car Roll Not happy at all with this because I was flipping it ok during training last Saturday. Yesterday I got it going then it came down on my ribs and couldn't breath. Tried another couple of times to get it going again, but couldn't. Last place in this. Squat Was pretty confident going into this as I felt I had a good chance of a good few reps. During the first rep [240k] My belt rode up by back and messed with my head. Managed to get the 240k and then the first barrel, 255k, but with the belt head was out of it and failed the 270k, second barrel. Hercules Hold Pretty happy with this and I got a pretty good time of 37.09s Brick Deadlift Going into this I was really nervous since I couldn't do 215k the week before. The 240k opener felt really good and so did the next lift at 260k. Got the 280k up around halfway and then couldn't finish it. Stones Usually this is my banker and felt good about doing all the stones. Tacky felt good before I went, but when I started it was like honey. The first stone of 110k was ok, then it took me around 30s to get the 120k up. Overall I got four stones, upto 140k, in 64s which really annoyed me since I did 5 stones at Fraserburgh last year in 44s and was taking my time. This has given me so much motivation to improve. Going to work my ass off over summer to improve the fitness and lose some weight, then keep the fitness up after summer. Strength has to improve and get more explosive. I know what I need to do to put in a good performance next year so its just about getting it done. |

Top 4 were: Chris Innes, Ewan Cameron, Louis McLean and Andy Cairney. I think I had the strength to do well, but it seems like all the little things that could have gone wrong did. Its all a learning experience and thats my 5th comp aswell, so Im happy about how things are going. Good luck for BSM Loz! |

hey guys thats me home in shetland and still feeling some effects from aturday namely my lower back. i had a great time and achieved what i set out to do in my irst atempted at this level which was a top 5 finish. ok so here's my thoughts on how i did. log press :- i was last up with stuart bell after seeing some of the laddoing really well ad my nervs kicking in i thought Fuck. but got there and did 8 reps had 1 taken off for not lisening to the ref which i fair enough as i lack the experience. Truck pull:- i felt i was ok at this and finished 2nd with 21.10 meters so i was delighed with this Medley :- i came 4th on this event and was the only person to shoulder the sand bag. again i was having a great comp in my mind Car roll:- this has to be my new favorit event it looks cool and is cool pure a simple. i place 5th in this event so again i was pleased wth my performance so far now inside for the last 4 events Squats:- as ihave been trying to inprove my squas i was hoping fr 2 reps on these just used knee raps here. so went in for the first at 240 and was atad high so no rep so did it again and moved to 255kg got the rep and the to 270kg and got the rep then for the next barrel is just didn't feel right so left t at that and so i had 3 reps which i was over the moon with. and i finished joint 4th in this event hold:- i have never done a grip event like this so i was unsureon how i would do but i got set into it and i must say that it wasn't to bad and so i got a time of 41.26 seconds and a 4rth place. Brick Deadlif:- now this has been a thorn in my traning and with my lockouts being shite i thought i might get a 260 but had to settle for 240 and si was i little disapointed about that as i finished last and missed out on god points. stones:- did 4 out of the 6 stones aain alittledisapointed about this but i had a top 5 place now and so i thought you have come and done what you inteneded and what the hell if you didn' get all the stones. overall i have had a great time and had great experiences in meeting and compeeting with the guys again and also had a laugh through the comp. i would like to say the Loius has put on a great sow for us th compedators and for the public to watch and i hope it continues next year. i know what i have to do now to get better and maybe next year i will aim for a top 4 finish. p.s. i also so won best up and coming athlete which was an added bonus. i'm now going to have my fingers crossed that TWI will take 5 scottish guys to the BSM this year and i'll get more experience with that too and if not there is alway next year. heres the vid too http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=lspeur0l8cc |
