Seriously, that press looked stupid easy. If I hadn't torn my pec though I think I could have given him a run for his monkey... :bonk
Zydrunas was on fire the whole way through.

I have to say that this was another very successful Champs League comp. Marcel and Ilkka really know what they are doing.

Here's my write-up if you guys aren't sick of reading about this comp yet...

Holland Grand Prix
Strongman Can we post you your prize monkey -6/1/08
Varsseveld, Holland

Going into this competition I was not in the best state of mind. I tore a portion of my upper pectoralis muscle off the bone (humerus) just 12 days prior and it was still very sore. I intended on just doing what I could and having a good time.

Event 1
Giant Medley (50' yoke- 850, 3 flips with 800 tire, load (5 meters each) 2- 275 lb. carpet rolls and 2- 190 lb. washing machines.
This medley is just sick... I was in the second heat against Zydrunas and I shouldn't have had a problem beating him. At least my start was good. I smoked the yoke and even beat Z by a couple seconds. Then I flew through the tire, but when I tried to shoulder the carpet roll I had to push it up into place with my left arm which immediately sent a surge of pain through my pec! After a moment of gathering my wits I decided to just carry the next roll like a hussefeld stone which took a lot more time and allowed Z to catch me. We were tied on the first washing machine but then he ran through the last one and edged me out by a little over a second. Jarno Hams tore up the course and won with a time around 12 seconds faster than me and Z.
Damn it that hurt!

Max Log Press
I was dreading ths event. Which really sucks since my press has come up so much lately. Coming out to this contest I was hoping for 120 kilos (264) so I could at least save a point or two. The log itself (IFSA Spec) was 100 kilos and it was all we had to warm up with so when I did a few reps that felt ok I decided to go for the 120 in warm ups. This too went up easy. It hurt a bit but I felt like my pec would hold up and I decided to open with 140 (308). I made sure to clean the log way up on top of my chest to try and keep my chest out of the movement as much as possible. My legs were shakey but they did most of the work and I threw the weight up! After that I felt like I had one more good lift in me so I said "what the hell, let's go with 160!" I was pretty nervous when I went out for this but I had a really good clean and got a lot of leg drive into the lift. Much to my suprise it went up EASY. It was just the holding it at the top that posed a problem. This part hurt like hell!! I fought to keep the lockout and held it long enough to get the whistle; there was NO WAY I was letting it down! I think this lift earned a lot of respect from the rest of the guys, which always means a lot.
I just looked over the results; if I had gone to 175, which I think was very possible without an injury, I would have taken 3rd in this event! Man, talk about a slap in the face. Now that I feel like I can keep up with the big boys on overhead events I have this major setback...
Zydrunas opened with the ugliest 170 (374) I have ever seen. He even dropped his first attempt but then slammed it up for a good call. He then went on to smash the world record with a successful 207.5 kilo (457 lbs) and made it look REALLY easy!

Truck Pull - 20 meters (66 ft.) 20 tonnes (45,000 lbs)
This looked like it was going downhill but the course was deceptive. There were a lot of bumps which made it extremely difficult to finish this course. No one had finished it until Levi Vaoga, who weighs nearly 400 lbs, went. He was up just before me so now I knew I had to gut this pull out. The start with the rope assist hurt my pec pretty bad since m arm was stretched out over my head but once it was moving I dug in with my feet pretty hard and kept it going. This was one of the hardest truck pulls I have ever done and my quads started to burn pretty bad about half way through the course. There was a slight incline at the 13 meter mark, where a lot of the guys got stuck, and when I felt it I pushed even harder with my legs which turned the burn into a searing inferno! I wish I could have used my arms a little more and saved my legs from being blown apart by this pull.
I finished just ahead of Levi and took the lead with a time of 46.77 seconds. Agris Kazelniks felt the pain when he finished the course with a time of just over a minute and he joined me hovering over the trash can. Zydrunas also tore up the course and beat me by just 4 seconds! If I could have used my arms more I know I could have beaten this time!!!
We were the only 4 that finished the course.
2nd

Weight for Height - 56 lbs
We started out at 4 meters 60 which proved to be too high for about half of the field. I have to add that the weight we used had a fixed handle which makes it much harder to throw. I made the first height but at 4 meters 80 (about 15.5 feet) I couldn't quite get the trajectory right. I had plenty of height but I just didn't get it over the bar... This pissed me off; especially since I am usually better with my left arm and I couldn't use it.
Zydrunas and Ervin Katona were the only two that were successful at this height but Ervin missed at 5.20 meters. Zydrunas continued his great showing by setting a personal record when he cleared 5.20.
Tie for 6th... ugly

Conan's Wheel - 360 kilos (~800 lbs.)
I knew this would be a good event for me since I had done a little practice the Monday before and it caused no pain in my chest or arm. Having no pain made me feel very confident which also helps when it comes to winning events! The bar was set pretty low but no one had any trouble picking it up. The problems came from trying to walk around the surface on which it was set up. It had big dips for water runoff so if you didn't watch your step you could easily step wrong and lose the implement forward... which is exactly what happened to Levi Vaoga. He seemed doomed from the start. He has a big chest which never bodes well for this event and his belt popped off when he initially lifted the apparatus. After a quarter turn he hit the dip and nose dived into the ground. He walked off visibly upset by his performance. I was suprised by how many guys didn't get past a full turn. Then I felt it; this thing was heavy! However, I had a perfect set up (thanks to my mentor Jim Glassman!!!!) and I took it for a distance of nearly 2 and a quarter turns. Zydrunas decided he was going to seal his victory right here and he went all the way for 2 turns just edging out Andrus Murumets for second place in the event! This guy has no weaknesses any more.

Atlas Stones - 70"-54", (264,308,330,360,400)
For the first time in my carrer as a Strongman I can say I was dreading this event... The motion of bringing my arm across my body was absolutely agonizing, go figure it was a pec tear, and of course when you grab a stone that is exactly how your arms are positioned. I will post a video so you guys can see how ugly this run was for me. It was like I was lifting them with one arm! I actually rolled the stones up the right side of my body and pushed them on with one hand. Except, of course, for my first attempt at the 120 (264) stone. I didn't throw it high enough so I had to try and press it up... well that was a bad idea. Searing pain went through the whole left side of my body and I quickly dropped the stone! This really pissed me off so on the next attempt I threw it up and then did the same with the next two. Lifting them off the ground hurt like hell but coming out of my lap was ok so if I lifted them fast enough I wouldn't have to get under and press any of them up. Well, much to my suprise, this strategy worked. It was ugly but I had a time of 29.44 seconds which was about 20 seconds faster than Zydrunas' second place time! I am absolutely shocked by some of these times but I guess it was hot and the tacky was absolute sh*t. Seriously, it was like using butter on your arms and only 4 of us finished all 5 stones.
1st

All in all, I had a great time. I met some great people and I learned a lot about how far I can push myself when the time calls for it. I wish I hadn't been so stupid in training when I ripped my pec because I seriously think I could have won this contest! Better now than at World's I guess.
