Ho-lee fuck what an odd weekend. I flew in a few days early with my family to visit relatives and have a bit of an extended vacation on the island, which was great. Got to see cousins, aunts and uncles hat have been out of the picture for a long time, including my cousin David who flew in, in ‘his’ F18. THAT was cool. Friday I picked up Sean and Dave Laidlaw at the airport after a long wait as Sean went through Air Canada’s extended customer irritation program. We wound up taking the ferry to save time, and much discussion of how weak and skinny we were followed. It would turn out to be somewhat prophetic. The rallying cry of “Needs more test” has never been more accurate. Dave followed his usual pattern of talking about himself and how well he was going to do- this too was prophetic and he had a career weekend. After an irritatingly long drive we arrived and had dinner with most of the other Highland folk and the ever annoying also-rans who shall remain nameless. There was a theater across from the hotel so we went and saw Iron Man, which kicked ass. Further socializing and insults the next morning along with breakfast, then on to the field where I was sorely missing coffee. Fuck! I got lumped in with the B’s, appropriately enough since I would have been barrel scrapings in the A’s but still. I’d rather be last with people I like- not a shot at B’s in general, just a hefty portion of this crew. Hard to push hard when your substandard throws have you still comfortably in front. Complacency and hubris would get me though. We started with the sheaf, which was 22lbs (not 23 or 24 as Dave continues to hype) and I cleared 18 easily but shafted myself at 20 feet and blamed the equipment. Because it’s all the forks fault. Fuck. Event two was the WFH, had a scary moment when 12 feet took 3 attempts and cleared in a ugly fashion, but made 13 easy and rang one hard off the bar at 14. And that would be the last highlight of the day… throwing wise. Braemar stone, as Sean said, for skill-less thugs or something like that, always one of my faves but not today. 26or 27lb rock, apparently, (I hope) my best was I think 27 feet? Usually I am good for 32 to 36 depending on the rock. Very frustrating. Open stone, did a standing throw with my first, shuffle with the second, went back to the stand for 3 and put every last bit of my body, mind and soul into it, and threw shorter than the previous two. I was fucked mentally. Sean did not appear much happier at the other trig, and really nobody other than Dave was having a good day. My first warm up with the 56, I slipped on the wet grass and blew out my groin/hamstring. Tried one throw and could not plant my left leg at all, so I pulled the pin on my day and started drinking. Maybe with age comes wisdom, but this turned out to be a good idea. Sean bailed on the Sheaf after his back locked up on him again, so by the time the last event of the day rolled in, we were both hammered. We were chatting with a dark haired cutie in daisy dukes and a bikini top about the events (she was with her brother, who appeared to be psychotic) when Sean figured he should jump back into the competition proving that age=wisdom but age + beer + ass cancels that shit. I’ll leave it to him to describe how the caber feels when you’re seeing triple, but she was impressed. Lots of sobering up for me and booze for the boys, some total madness and then the three hour drive back to Vic, with throwing for me supposed to start at eight freaking thirty. So on 4 hours of sleep I hit Starbucks for a triple Americano and decided I was mad as fuck and was just going to roll with that. I put on my headphones at the field and ignored everyone but my buddy Dan Loeb, who had just finished throwing up an hour before the Games started. Athletes? Bet your fucking ass. I paced a lot and swore a lot and my opening throw in the light stone was 40’6. Pardon? Finished with 41 something and first spot. What? Just reinforcing that I know nothing, but hatred was definitely the theme for the day. LWFD was way harder, my hamstring was a light shade of purple but the groin hurt way more and planting was very, very hard. I made 49’11.5 inches, and since 50’is my bare minimum for being acceptable, it was still a miserable FAIL but could have been worse. Second place. Light hammer, I tried it- this is usually the event that fucks my neck bad, and I was worried about the lat- but managed 86 or something, don’t know the placing but it could have been worse. WFH went very well. 11, 12, 13, again took 3 shots at 14 that were close but no luck. This season I will get 14 at a sub 250 BW, which will make me very happy. Caber wasn’t so good. Never once had anything close to control on all 3 throws, thereby fucking myself out of first place. No big deal, it was still a major improvement over the previous day. |

Both days were alot of fun and it was great to finally meet all you guys, eventhough I stunk up the field big time LOL. On to the rest of season! Oh and my head was still peeling as of last Friday from the burn I received in Comox. Jeff I thought you threw well man, especially the WFH in Victoria. I know what you mean about being "fucked mentally" haha, nerves got the better of me in Comox and I was gassed in Victoria but hey I wasn't nervous anymore ;) More Test... hahaha Langford is still gay. |

It was not a write home kind of weekend performance wise to say the least. Great people and Cold Bargain beer makes the BC weekend one not to be missed. And it is always nice to get the first games of the year done. |
