Looking forward to the main event in this one, I think Rampage will win by tko in the 2nd round. Joe 'Daddy' Stevenson returns as well, after the beating he got by BJ Penn. |

Ok, here's my thoughts and feelings on the whole mess: Prelims Justin Bucholz vs. Corey Hill (LW) I can't find shit about Justin Bucholz, so I am assuming he's being brought in to lose against the freakish 6'4" Corey Hill. Hill has no professional fights but did well enough on TUF 5. And you can't teach 6'4" in that weight class. Let's say Hill wins for a simple lack of any other information. Melvin Guillard vs. Dennis Siver (LW) Guillard's back? Really. Huh. Siver went the distance with Maynard recently and has a 1-2 record with the UFC. He's dangerous enough but isn't money like Guillard. I have to assume they're putting him in there to see how he fairs against the little maniac. He's a submission guy though and unless Melvin's been working on that or he keeps it standing, Melvin could very well lose this by submission. More than likely, though, I see Guillard with the KO or TKO. Jorge Gurgel vs. Cole Miller (LW) The little fellas are rampant on the undercard. Gurgel has a 3-2 record in the UFC and 12-3 overall with 9 of those coming from submission. But he's never finished a guy in the octagon. Miller has a similar record but he's finished most of his fights in the UFC. Gurgel has never impressed me but then again neither has Miller really. Gurgel claims to be better prepared as he stepped back from teaching for this fight but I'm gonna go with the devil I know and say Miller takes this by TKO in the second or third. Gabriel Gonzaga vs. Justin McCully (HW) Uh, sure. Good night, Justin. Unless he got a whole lot better, he's not going to be able to hold the BJJ black belt down and sweat out a decision. And his standup isn't exactly awesome. I see Gonzaga getting back on track here. Main Card Marcus Aurelio vs. Tyson Griffin (LW) This should be a great spazzy little fight. I see more UD stuff but a solid 15 minutes of action. Leaning toward a Griffin win here. Josh Koscheck vs. Chris Lytle (WW) I hate Josh Koscheck and I love Chris Lytle. I'm gonna put that out there early. But I can still be objective enough to realize that Koscheck is dangerous and IS learning. He's getting more comfortable standing but I think that's going to last about 2 minutes with Lytle before he starts shooting like a priest at a choir boy convention. The question is whether he can do anything to Lytle when he gets him down as Lytle also has a very overlooked ground game. I figure Koscheck to try and use Hughes' fight with Lytle as a template after a bit of standup. Which he will lose. But on the other hand, we have a much more aggressive Chris Lytle. Heavy, accurate hands, good footwork and fucking tough as nails. Never finished in over 40 professional MMA fights. and something like a 16-1 record as a professional boxer. Despite that, most of Lytle's wins are by submission. I'm looking at Lytle coming out hard and fast and slapping Koscheck around on the feet while Kos looks for a Hail Mary overhand right. After it hits the floor, I think Kos is going to end up choked. Joe Stevenson vs. Gleison Tibau (LW) Fucking lightweights. Holy shit. Joe's last fight was a one-sided beating at the hands of BJ "I'm a fucking cock" Penn. Look for him to be getting back on track with some nickel slick submission shit. Ricardo Almeida vs. Patrick Cote (MW) Patrick Cote just might be the only Quebecious I actually fucking like. Heavy hands and a grandly underrated ground game, since he found his balls in the octagon, he's been knocking people stupid. Almeida, on the other hand, is a submission specialist who trained under Renzo with reasonable enough standup. He's not going to stand and trade with Cote, though. That would be idiotic. He knows Cote can take a punch and that he can't throw one hard enough to even wobble the frenchman. Or at least hasn't traditionally. I think Cote is going to be smart enough not to leave an arm or his neck out there too long and look to land enough shots to wobble and then stun Ricardo. That being said, Almeida's a sneaky fucker and a flash submission wouldn't shock me at all. Quinton "Rampage" Jackson vs. Forrest Griffin (LHW Title Shot) On paper, this is Rua/Griffin all over again. Which makes people a little more confident than they should be. Griffin isn't going to outwork Rampage. Rampage's last fight was 25 minutes with Dan Henderson and his conditioning held up fine. Now granted, Griffin is a fuck of a lot bigger than Dan but Dan's been wrestling for a long fucking time and can wear guys out pretty bad. Jackson is stupid strong, hits like a fucking truck and can take a beating. Griffin has excellent conditioning, a heart that won't stop, increasingly technical striking and has a pretty decent ground game and despite what a lot of people think, can take a punch. He's also been training with Wanderlei for the past few months and getting some tips and tricks about the almighty clinch. And probably about using knees in there too. Which can only help his game and give him a bit more to work with against Rampage. Even with all that, I expect Quinton to win this. I think it'll be a decent enough fight for a few rounds but I can see Forrest basically getting overwhelmed after eating a couple hard shots. That isn't to say I would go "Wow. Didn't see that coming!" if Forrest managed to find a way to beat Jackson but I see that ending as a whole lot less likely than Rampage defending his title. |
