I have been getting back pain pretty consistently since moving over to strongman training. I had been using really bad form on deadlifts and kept straining my lower back. Recently I have eased off on the deadlift weights and pursued better form and, over the last couple of weeks, I have stopped training at all.....In spite of this I am still having a throbbing ache in my lower back all the time. Whenever I stand it takes a few extra seconds to straighten myself up, the only time I dont really hurt is when I am training. I am a bit worried that I have damaged my back permanently. I stretch before and after workouts but it doesnt help. I struggle to bend over and lift the bath plug out of the bath without holding on to the wall - it is particularly bad if I have to lift with my legs straight (which is how I used to do my deadlifting!!!). I can squat ok and can even deadlift with no real pain, but it hurts a bit and constantly even when I am sitting - when I stand it is just uncomfortable. I was doing the ironing (I know, I know) the other day and after about an hour it was too uncomfortable to keep standing.... Now I cant even get comfy in bed and I wake up worse still (i think my bed may be a problem actually) Any thoughts on what I can do.....? I already take cod liver oil and glucosamine every day! |

Sounds real rough for you. Because of the length of time, I think you should get someone to check it over preferably a sports doc or a good sensible GP to rule out a misaligned disc or severe sprain etc. Any visible swelling, does it feel tight all the time? I do get back pain myself between sets and after strenuous sessions but this reduces with subsequent recovery. When it's bad even carrying a shopping bag or vacuuming can be most uncomfortable. The leg thing sounds like tight hams though, which can impact on lower back pain.

Cheers guys, weirdly enough its been really good today. Slept with a pillow under my pelvis last night, tilting my hips forward but with no pillow under my head and woke up feeling a bit easier. Will need to get it checked over though if only for the fear of permenant damage!!! I like the idea of swimming after a workout though to loosen up. There isnt a pool at any of the places I train, but I think swimming a bit would probably help anyway??!!??! The only excercise I do is heavy weight training, I think some cardio and flexible sport (something where I am moving rather than static) like swimming, badminton, football might actually help me become a bit more limber... Hmmmmm |
