Don't think he'll trade you for one, but you can always ask.

Zero interest in this tape! Just wondering why you declaring it to be sold?

I meant; Why is it being sold now and not back then, when I still collected stuff like that. I would have paid that and a lot more.

Beginners Guide to VHS collecting needed ...

1. What tapes are considered collectable?
I'm having a hard time gauging the scope of the international VHS-collector community.
Film collectors are obviously interested in titles that have not had a LD/DVD/BD-release. Certain labels also seem to attract collectors, as do very early/old releases. But it seems to me that Exploitation films are the only 'Genre' with active interest from collectors. Is that in fact correct, or did I miss something?

2. Rental vs. sell-through
What's the deal with rental copies?
Browsing this forum it seems that most people are exclusively after rental tapes. Why's that?
Have many of the (especially early) tapes never been released as a retail/sell-through version? Do rentals have other covers than normal tapes and are as such rarer (more collectable)?
And how do I know the difference between a rental and sell-through tape? (Unless it says 'rental' on the cover in a language that I can understand)

3. Bootlegs
As counterfeits are common with all collectables and "bootleg VHS" rather easy to produce, I guess that these are quite common, both as "mass market bootlegs" to sell films otherwise not (easily) available in this version as well as high-quality copies of tapes that are higher valued collectables.
What are things to look out for to identify bootlegs/non-originals tapes?
Especially problematic are obviously online deals/auctions when you only see pictures of the tape/cover and cannot take into account quality of the print/paper used for the cover and labels.
A related question: VHS tapes are designed to carry two labels, one on the top and one on the side/spine; however, lately I've seen plenty of tapes with only the top label. Have there been a significant number of publishers that released titles with only one label or is it just a common issue that labels are removed/get lost?

4. Grading
Are there any standardized or generally accepted rules/shortcodes for grading/describing the condition of a tape?
What are features that collectors look for? (Obviously cut/ripped/torn covers, missing stickers/labels etc.) Do people care about additional markings/stickers by rental stores?

5. Value
I have absolutely no clue how to find out the value of a tape. Now, that's not really a problem if I ever have any tapes I want to sell since I could just list them on eBay and find out myself. However it also means that I don't dare to make any offers on items for sale on this board, since I want to start out my collection with cheap(er) tapes, but don't want to "insult" anyone by making far too low offers on their sales.
How do you set your selling offers or bids? Have you all simply been collecting for such a long that you know the values of your kind of tapes from previous sales? Or do you have a set of fixed base fees based on certain criteria (age and condition of the tape, popularity of director/actors, type of subgenre, origin of the tape etc.)?

On a related note: why is it common in this forum to sell items via a PM-based "auction" (taking offers and selling to the highest bidder)? Isn't it rather tedious to keep PMing all interested parties with the newest offers? And don't the buyers have to trust the seller that he's not just making up bids to push the price?
I'm just asking, because if the offers were public (posted in the thread, as I'm used to from other forums) I could see who's collecting what and actually learn something about the prices/value of certain tapes.

6. Shipping:
I'm sure that most of (VHS-)trading is done online with collectors shipping items (internationally). And like every other collectable, some sellers pack better than others and everyone knows the frustration of receiving broken stuff, because the seller didn't protect them properly.
What kind of packaging do you use for shipping your VHS?
VHS-tapes and their boxes seem quite sturdy to me, so my guess would be that they'd arrive just fine with an ordinary bubble-wrap envelope. (Though I probably wouldn't risk it.)
I'm not talking about the uber-rare several-hundred-€/$-tapes here, but the average 5-25€/$ collectable tape.
(Also, tapes are rather heavy, so (international) shipping costs likely make up a big part of expenses for everyone's collection, right?)

7. Info - Sources
Are there any databases / good lists which you guys use as references to know which tapes have even been produced? Or are you all in it for such a long time that you simply pick up infos here and there over the years?
Obviously OFDb and realcmv are usable resources for German VHS, but what about other countries?
Are main sources still catalogues published by the labels themselves?
For (non-asian) LDs LDDb.com seems to be the relatively complete standard, but I don't know of anything similar for VHS/V2000/Beta tapes.
Unlike DVDs/BDs, which you can mostly find infos in online-shops there are (for obvious reasons) very few seller-based databases.
I would be especially interested in any sites that list large numbers of Asian LD/VHS releases of (East-)Asian films. I'd just like to know what's 'out there'. (Doesn't have to be in English, it actually works much better googling original titles.)

8. And one final question not related to tapes, but to this forum:
What's a reliable free picture host for uncensored/adult images? I mostly use imageshack and sometimes photobucket, but I have to manually censor any nudity on covers.

1. What tapes are considered collectable?

That's almost like asking which sibling is the most loveable.
I say, go after something you truly desire, that's what I do.

I collect giallo tapes, but on the other hand also 90's cult classic vipco tapes, something most other hc collectors wouldn't even look at. So it's very individual.

2. Rental vs. sell-through
What's the deal with rental copies?

To find an ex rental copy in mint condition is much harder than finding a sell-through tape. But, in some countries they sold and and rented the same tapes.
And, in Finland for example, the sell-through tapes were often copies of the rental tapes, so the rental ones had better picture quality.

3. Bootlegs
As counterfeits are common with all collectables and "bootleg VHS" rather easy to produce, I guess that these are quite common
...
Have there been a significant number of publishers that released titles with only one label or is it just a common issue that labels are removed/get lost?

After a while, spotting bootlegs becomes easy. They just don't "feel right".
One sticker, two.. That varies A LOT. And some companies released one batch with two stickers, a second batch with one sticker.

But especially british pre certs have a lot of boots among the real ones. Also, the Dutch tape scene has many "grey" releases. Especially the "Rene specials" (somebody will fill you in on that).

But I think there's been bootleggers in every country tapes were released.

4. Grading
Are there any standardized or generally accepted rules/shortcodes for grading/describing the condition of a tape?
What are features that collectors look for? (Obviously cut/ripped/torn covers, missing stickers/labels etc.) Do people care about additional markings/stickers by rental stores?

I don't mind if my tapes seen a bit of life. While others are almost hysterical if a tapes is not like new.
Some people choose to remove the stickers, I don't, I prefer to leave the as they are. On pre cert you'll find sticker removal instructions & stuff.

Grading tapes varies a lot, but plenty of pictues and a good description ususally does it. Always, always ask for a picture of the tape if you're offered one, not just the sleeve.

5. Value
I have absolutely no clue how to find out the value of a tape.

Me neither, in the end it's up to you how bad you want it. But ask a fellow collector how much he paid for his copy, that'll give you an idea.

On a related note: why is it common in this forum to sell items via a PM-based "auction" (taking offers and selling to the highest bidder)?

Many, including me, are very private about their collecting. Or some collectors don't want to jinx their buiness by letting others know. Superstitious you know.. ;)

6. Shipping:
...
What kind of packaging do you use for shipping your VHS?

Shipping for me is very expensive as I live in Finland. Shipping is often more expensive than the tape itself.
I always recycle stuff, bubble wrap etc. Also styrofoam, it's messy but can take a lot of beatings. I usually go overboard with packing, but it's worth it. Even if it takes an hour to open a package, I'd rather do that than find a broken tape inside.
Occasionally, your parcels will look like they've been through a war zone. Why? That you'll have to ask the mail service.

And some times, a tape will be damaged no matter how well it's been packed. But that's quite rare. And even if the box has been damage, the tape is usually ok.

7. Info - Sources
Are there any databases / good lists which you guys use as references to know which tapes have even been produced?

Ask on forums, then there's for ex pre cert's database, the finnish fix database etc. Google and ask around I say.

8. And one final question not related to tapes, but to this forum:
What's a reliable free picture host for uncensored/adult images?

http://photobucket.com/ is good, but nudity is not allowed, also swastikas might cause problems.
http://www.imageshack.us/ is more leanient.
http://filefap.com/home for adult pictures (there's other too, that's just one)
Finnish http://www.aijaa.com/ is good and allows adult stuff too.

Tip: have a peep at what other use. ;)
