What's the pic quality like on the Malay dvd Jack?
Comparable to the US dvd?

Is it still available?

I remember seeing a pic of it once and I certainly preferred the cover to the US version. ;)

I haven't watched it for a while but I remember it as looking pretty good. However... it's fullscreen! The reg. 1 DVD is lbx.

Not sure if it's still available.

HERMAN YAU made the awesome horror flicks EBOLA SYNDROME and UNTOLD STORY that both star ANTHONY WONG. For some reason not a whole lot of fans of those films have watched TAXI HUNTER even tho that films is ALSO directed by Herman Yau and it ALSO stars Anthony Wong as a maniac on the loose. It's a pity cos it's a really good film. Gore fans who are only watching these films for the nasty scenes but don't give a fuck about characters or plot probably won't like TAXI HUNTER all that much as it's not as extreme and sick as the other two. But I'd recommend that everyone else watch it. I own it on HK video-cd and Malay DVD. The rest of you might find it a lot easier to just pick up the reg. 1 DVD (LOL). Here's the trailer:

Early/obscure jiang shi films
Hey there! Fans of obscure cinema are always welcome here. And, yeah, we all get distracted by shiny foil or pieces of yesterdays newspaper flying past the window don't we.

Unfortunately, I can't give you any info on ANY of those films - but you ask about the The Voyage of the Dead VCD. You've already found it listed on the Santostreet site. You do realise you can buy the titles listed on that site, right? You can. They're dvd-r but at least you can get to watch the film even if it's not an official release.

When tapes go GRRR in the night

What a fershtunkener afternoon! Arr marone!!! I was gonna watch two poliziesco films of the finest calibre, VIOLENT NAPLES and VIOLENT ROME, both starring Italy's own Dirty Harry, Maurizio Merli. I'd pulled out the uncut, English dubbed, letterboxed Danish video tapes (released as "Helvedes Forgård" and "Rottereden"). I've got my coffee, I've got my lollies (which some of you call candy or sweets), I've got the blinds down, and I've got the phone off the hook. Perfect.

Now, what I don't need is for the first tape to say, "Grrrrrrreeee". I try and fastforward and it sounds like one of those grindgore bands that some of you listen to. Major worry. So I try it on the other VCR. Same result. And now the tape won't even rewind. So I try the first VCR again. Now it rewinds but won't play at all. I try 5 times. Same result. So I try it on the second VCR again, now the tape plays... and stops again after 10 seconds. I try 10 times. Same result. Major bummer. I consider to just skip it and watch the other film - but no, I'm like a spoilt brat now I W-A-N-T to watch that film. I'm about to have a hissy fit. I'm about to yell and throw things at the wall.

So I do what I always do in those situations; have another cup of coffee and think rationally about the problematic situation! At this point I'm thinking I might as well skip the film viewing and try and repair the tape. I open the tape case and discover one teeny weeny little piece of plastic has come undone. I put it back and close the cassette again (which takes me 15-20 minutes cos those damn things are always a pest).

Finally I put the screws back in, put the tape in the VCR, and it works like a charm. My gawd, it took like an hour to fix that tape. Anyhoo, fortunately the tape wasn't damaged and the picture is crisp clear and looks awesome. Brilliant! Halfway thru VIOLENT ROME I fall asleep. >_<
(i.e. during the second film and only because I'd been awake for 24 hours, certainly not because the film is boring cos none of them are!)

How about the rest of you? Have you had tapes fail on you when you've finally sat down to watch them? Tapes that were playing perfectly well the last time you saw them.

QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC
I don't think I found anything worthwhile all year at flea markets. :(

QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC
Uhh, well, it's one of Mondo Macabro's popular titles!

But maybe you meant on VHS? I have two other VHS releases, one from the US retitled BLACK MAGIC TERROR and one from Canada also called QUEEN OF BLACK MAGIC. And there are tapes dubbed into other languages. I also have the Indonesian VCD.

Bruce Holecheck posted about the various versions here:
http://bruceholecheck.blogspot.dk/2012/10/...jios-black.html

Cut status of the Belgian tape; Like I said I own the US tape and also the Belgian tape but I have never compared them. I vaguely remember an article in IS IT... UNCUT? that said the Belgian tape was missing some very brief bits and pieces, but the letterboxed picture is better than the fullscreen presentation on the US tape. Don't quote me on that piece of info though, and don't take it for gospel. You should rather find that copy of UNCUT.

PS: Congrats on the tape! It's a beautiful tape and I love my copy. I bought mine from Mads Jensen many years back. If I remember correctly I paid 400 DKK (or more).

Got something to say about Asian movies
Btw, I'm gonna post this link here even though it really should be in the eBay section, but I figured some of you might not check that section.

The old "Essential Guide to Hong Kong Movies" is on eBay right now and for another 4 days. It's a seller in the UK. The book is now very rare. It was released by the old video label Eastern Heroes, and it's a great book to look up titles. I've already got a copy and won't bid on this one.

Thanks for the info on the DVD. I'm pretty sure I'd already heard of that French DVD and that's why I always say there's no English friendly uncut version other than the UK tape. I don't know about the FS VCD, I've asked on several forums but have never got a reply. Nobody seems to know, LOL. And even if it's uncut the subs are bound to be the usual wonky ones.  The UK tape has restored subs in proper English and since the PQ wouldn't be any better on the VCD I'm fine with the tape. BUT if you get the VCD do please let us know about the cut status.  :hello!:

The Joy Sales VCD of On The Run is definitely cut and missing the scene with the doctor at the end plus the epilogue.

The French DVD is fully uncut. It's not English friendly but I made a custom English subtitled version of it about a year ago.

I love this film and rate it up there as one of the very best HK new wave action movies. Hard hitting, gritty and no nonsense.

Thanks for the info, mate! I was thinking about getting the VCD just to have it but I'll scrap that idea now. B)

Cool you made fan subs. Did you translate the dialogue or use subs from one the the old releases?

am i the first one that noticed that the thread's title is wrong?
puRchases?

Never noticed.

There are other slightly incorrect headlines; There's been a couple of "For sell" threads (it should be *For sale*). But, hey, we're not the grammar nor spelling polizei.

I'd give my right ear for that Centipede Horror tape, no doubt someone here on this forum snapped it up!  :P

I'm sure you know it's on eBay, right? :D

But it's a laserdisc... and it's 400 bucks. :(

I offered him 50 dollars and he replied: "Sorry!!it's too rare movies to search & condition item:like new.pls got it.thanks". I guess he's saying it's a very rare film that I can't have for 50 bucks, "Got that!".

Anybody with 400 to burn click here:

EDIT: I just checked and it seems even the eBay page can't believe I only offered 50 dollars. It says: "US $380.00 Expired". I did so not offer $380.

Hongkong Movie Collection
Awesome tapes there, mate. And yeah too bad the well seems dry now. But maybe he'll come back at some stage. I asked him if the tapes were from his own collection or from stores, and he said both. So maybe he'll find more at some stage. The postage to Europe is a bitch but, hey, COOL TAPES!

The final scene on the docks has been removed and if I remember correctly a text card at the end is gone too (but I don't have the cut version so I can't check this). Apparently the other subtitled versions* end rather abruptly whereas ... SPOILER ... the uncut tape ends with the main characters being arrested by the police. I would have linked to screen grabs but unfortunately I've just discovered they were posted on ADG which ... is no more. :(

The UK tape also has remastered English subs.

*Apparently there is an old uncut HK VCD but it's not English friendly.
