Hello,
Being both new to this forum and also greek explotation films, I would ask other which one you would recommend me to buy first?
I.e. the ones which holds the standard, invention and horror of say, the spanish Templar films 71-75 and Jess Franco's Awful Dr. Orlof (62). Are there any?

Note: I like best films from the 1957-1982 period.

Best regards Stein S., Oslo

Since you are into horror you should definitely try LAND OF THE MINOTAUR aka THE DEVIL'S MEN (1976, a Greek/English co-production) which is out on a great widescreen disc in the UK. I am pretty sure you already have or at least have heard about the horror/exploitation film called ISLAND OF DEATH. These two are highly recommended and easy to find. I'd say they are the only Greek examples of pure horror. There are other that had horror elements here and there but the 2 above titles are probably the only ones that went straight for horror.

There are many (s)exploitation & crime Greek films that I would recommend but I don't know if you dig these genres.

Thanks, t-o!
I like sexploitation, but only of the more speculative type. Meaning for example, the italian Emanuelle-series (with one m), instead of the french Emmanuelle series (with two m's).

Any good greek action or crime films from the 60s and 70s?

When talking about greek cinema, I would like to know if many movies was produced in Cyprus? I know that Love Camp (77) featuring Laura Gemser was made there. But no one else.

I am pretty sure Milonakos' EMANUELLE QUEEN OF SADOS starring Gemser was also made in Cyprus. Some of the top sexploitation films I would recommend are:

MELI TO KORMI TIS
PIO THERMI KAI APO TON ILIO
MYKONOS ILLUSIONS

as for crime I recommend RANSOM BABY (Pavlos Filipou, 1973) which has a great cast and tons of violent action. It is pure crime action and avoids the drama that can be seen in so many of these films.

TO KORITSI KE TO ALOGO (aka LOVE ON A HORSE) was out on VHS and later on promo DVD (those DVDs supprorting mags & newspapers) with the weekly newspaper Thema without a cover...It's a rather slow film and not really strong (as you could think off the title and the VHS cover) but is cool & well-done.

The VHS version has a pre-credit scene missing from the DVD by the way...nothing sleazy indeed, the old man -wounded and covered with blood- tell us some words for the story. Well, I'm not 100% sure if the rest of the movie is the same, anyone out there who has seen both versions? :o

Here is my review of the film from the old trash-online site which contains details about the DVD & VHS versions:

SYNOPSIS: ***SPOILER ALERT*** Alexis, a 60-year old painter (Yianis Aryiris) lives at an isolated villa in the Greek countryside along with his mistress and model Julia (Anna Fonsou). He is disappointed of his inability to recreate his successful works of the past and blames it on his lost youth. Alexis' 20-year old hippy son, Larry (Christos Spiropoulos of HOUSE ON THE ROCKS) comes to visit although their relationship is not so good. The attraction between Larry and Julia is obvious from the very first moment. Alexis sees it and tries to take advantage of it: Pushing his mistress towards his son is the way for him to regain his lost inspiration. Watching them having sex makes him feel rejuvenated. One morning he watches them making love on Julia's horse and immediately turns this image into a painting. It will be the perfect work for him to present at the upcoming Tokyo art exhibition. However, Larry wants to leave and Alexis wants to keep him home until he finishes his painting. So one day Alexis injures himself with a shotgun in order to keep his son next to him. Afterwards he locks himself in a room and goes on with his work. Larry insists in wanting to leave with Julia. When they finally decide to leave Alexis, the results are tragic...

PLOT: The screenplay by Yiorgos Zervoulakos is actually a re-working of Evripides' ancient tragedy "Ipolitos". Zervoulakos was undoubtedly a master of "love-triangle-within-the-family" movies- keep in mind his other works: EROTIC ODYSSEY (where a son marries his father's ex-mistress) and HOUSE ON THE ROCKS (written & directed by Zervoulakos) where Christos Spiropoulos falls in love with his stepmother once again! These films, including LOVE ON A HORSE, were obviously low-budget as the plot was based on just 3 or 4 characters. However, despite this fact, these films managed to create tension. In Vagelis Serdaris' movie, a game of lust takes place between the 3 characters. Alexis is initially presented as the victim, the cuckold. However, this is certainly not the case since he causes the love affair between his mistress and his son himself. Julia is sexually repressed since she's been living with an impotent man for 3 years and Larry doesn't really care for his father and therefore feels no guilt. Alexis' gradual fall into dementia is just as interesting to watch as the "forbidden" affair between Larry & Julia. LOVE ON A HORSE kicks off like a regular romance film and gradually turns into an erotic thriller that cleverly builds up the tension. There aren't many movies that build an interesting story on just 3 characters that can create this kind of suspense. It must have been a hard task for Zervoulakos to come up with such brilliant ideas so congratulations to him!

ACTING: The 3 leading actors here are precisely guided by the brilliant script and effective direction. Anna Fonsou is just awesome, not only a fine-looking female but also a top-notch actress. The way she plays with her eyes, showing guilt, fear and passion- all at once, is noticeable during the scene where Spiropoulos undresses her for the first time. Yianis Aryiris is also perfect in his role while Christos Spiropoulos is a below the two leads. However he also does excellent work. Cult hero Kostas Karayiorgis (DIAMONDS ON HER NAKED FLESH) appears in a minor role and is not given enough screen time to unfold his supreme talent.

VISUAL: Typical 70's Greek-erotic style direction but with more style to it than usual. Credit goes to Vagelis Serdaris for creating some state-of-the-art scenes featuring Fonsou lying in the beach with the horse next to her. Some of the sex scenes are truly sensual and hot, not just because of Fonsou's beauty but also thanks to the direction. The Greek countryside setting is another strong point of the movie and contributes a lot to the creation of a sensual atmosphere.

SCORE: The score by Yerasimos Lavranos is a real masterpiece, just like the movie itself. A combination of dramatic and funky sounds that perfectly reflects the spirit of the early 70's hippie way of living. There are 2 main themes in the movie that are followed by one another. Their use is clever though.

MOVIE FACTS: Today Anna Fonsou is president of the Greek actors' union! Until today that the movie got a wide DVD release in Greece, most people that hadn't watched it thought it was some kind of bestiality porn movie with Fonsou having sex with a horse! Sad to say but in this country rumors are often stronger than facts.

OVERALL: This is 70's Greek erotic cinema at it's highest level. It's so well-made that appeals not only to cult & exploitation fans but also to a wider audience. LOVE ON A HORSE is a flawless creation from every point of view. Probably the only Greek film of the 70's that balanced between the erotic and arthouse genres. A classic masterpiece of it's kind.

SOURCE: TEAM VIDEO (Greece, VHS- fullscreen): The Greek VHS seems to be uncut and presents the feature in it's original fullscreen ratio. An advance DVD (by New Star) was distributed here in Greece (came as "gift" with a newspaper) but was cut by almost 20 minutes. But I have a bad feeling that the upcoming official DVD release will also be a worthless edited version like this one. As it seems the Greeks will never learn: Others release cut VHS tapes and uncut special edition DVD's- the Greeks do exactly the opposite! Better not to release a film on DVD than to put a shameful, butchered version such as this piece of crap! Unfortunately, the only way to go is the old VHS.

You know I was a big fan of that "old" trash-online site with those excellent reviews on Greek -and not only- exploitation. I din't know you have save them, I'm glad about that. You're welcome to post them again here (of course if you don't like to post them elsewhere...)

Hello,
I used last day searching out greek DVD shop, and found out that ca. 12 of them was only in greek language!
This afternoon I searched through the 5 in eng. lang., and found out the following:
Greek Movies - USA-based, was mostly stocking comedies and didn't have one of the suggested films in this thread
dvdvideo.gr - Had only used DVDs, and only Hollywood movies on top of that!
DVD Seytan - cinehound's own shop had many great films, but no greek ones
Lucifera Illuminatrix - great cult shop, but no greek films there either
Buyhardfilms - had only 2 greek DVDs, one from 1990 (and I don't like films after 1983), and another one called Vortex(?) from 1971. I clicked on that and saw it was out of stock!!!

So after searching through 5 sites and looking at several hundred movies... I found 0 (this is NOT a typo and means zero) greek films! (laughing like hell)
But it's really typical. The ones who lives a certain place are most of the time more interested in thing going on other places. (The grass is greener...-phenomen). Also 95% of the focus from the average DVD cult collector are also on these countries: USA, UK, Ita and HK. Meaning that filmmakers in other countries have a tough job indeed, just to get 5 minutes of attention.
This is not meant to be a critisism of Greece. If you search through Scandinavian DVD shops etc. the same phenomen will occur.

But I would like to ask people on this board one last time where to get these recommended films? Are there any greek labels that is selling direct to customer? Or are any of these titles released in USA, UK, Holland or Scandinavia?

Best regards Bingoboy

P.S. GREAT VIDEO COVER BY THE WAY, CINEHOUND !!!

Well, the sad fact is that there aren't a lot Greek of exploitation films on official DVD releases, I'm sorry. There are about 25-30 Greek porn of the 80s and some strange arthouse films llike VORTEX & SINGAPORE SLING but not many more. New Star label have released about 10-12 exploitation thrillers from 70s/80s in English language but I've heard their whosales are expensive. You could find some of them in a few foreign stores though (like XPLOITED CINEMA and SAZUMA)

By the way there are a lot of promo DVD releases of Greek sexploitation of the 70s, original DVDs but without covers or extras, just with a label on, and in Greek lang only. They were with newspapers & mags. You could find some of them in cheap prices in ebay by several Greek sellers.
