Do you think "Bacanales romanas" was actually directed by Puig? I'm especially interested in the "Fecha de Autorización": the date in which was assigned the visa (not the number of the visa itself). Some of these dates were included on a Spanish website, now unfortunately deceased, called cinefilus.net. |

The authorisation dates are included (sometimes) in the Ministry of Culture's website: http://www.mcu.es/bbddpeliculas/cargarFilt...nit&language=es What strikes me about the four films by Puig I have seen (I have yet to see LA SELVA ESTÁ LOCA, LOCA, LOCA..., which I believe is more of a comedy than anything else) is how badly made they are, even if he's the published author of filmmaking manuals. His scenes sometimes seem unresolved, plus they sometimes feel like filmed theatre, and he always seems to resort to intercutting if he realises a scene gets boring (the vestals splashing in the pool in UNA VIRGEN PARA CALÍGULA, for instance). Sometimes you wonder whether some bits were actually scripted. Since this pattern is repeated in those four films (less so in the first BACANALES ROMANAS), I presume it's the same person throughout, and not the same person who directed the other, more fluent and controlled products signed by Iquino or Guevara, which I've been watching of late. But then, I get the feeling you know more about this than me for I've just started watching Spanish softcore. So far, the technically worst made films of this kind in my experience are those signed (accurately or otherwise) by "Jacob Most" and "Albagran" (the common pseudonym of Alfonso Balcázar). At the other extreme, the best-made so far seem to me to be LA BASURA ESTÁ EN EL ÁTICO, Esteba's PORNO: SITUACIÓN LÍMITE, Palacios's MI CONEJO ES EL MEJOR and, except for the fudged final scene, DEPRAVACIÓN. I would also add INCLINACIÓN SEXUAL AL DESNUDO, signed by Iquino. I've yet to view any by Justo Pastor, a Madrid-based filmmaker who apparently represents the pits (He also made the first of the notorious hardcore films starring Poli Diaz, a down-on-his-luck heavyweight champion, who was apparently set up in those films to be laughed at). Do you know of any rumours against Jaime Puig's authorship? |

I agree with you: films like BACANALES or UNA VIRGEN are very badly made, even from a technical point of view. I have no evidence against (or in favour of) Puig's autorship, just a suspicion... As you certainly know, BACANALES was also released in a "foreign version" inclusive of hardcore sequences (courtesy of Ajita Wilson). |

Indeed, Puig's technique is awful. Now I remember his use of the wide-angle lens in UNA VIRGEN PARA CALIGULA, when Pipper and Joaquín Gómez are walking around the roman ruins in Tarragona. The VHS releases of the first two in Puig's Roman trilogy include the hardcore scenes! And with no warning on the cover! The first, as you said, has hard stuff with Ajita Wilson, but there's also a couple (a blond woman and an Egyptian stud) who perform real sex before Antonio Molino Rojo (Caesar) and Antonio Maroño (the stuttering general). Then the same couple appear again in UNA VIRGEN in what are obviously scenes from the same shooting sessions! (UNA VIRGEN also includes unused takes from the first BACANALES ROMANAS, there's an orgy scene in which Raquel Evans is seen wearing the same wig as in the earlier film!). BACANALES ROMANAS II, made when the Spanish softcore film was dead, is basically just a series of burlesque sketches. If the earlier film starred Raquel Evans and "Pipper", the second stars "Pipper" and Raquel Evans, the order of which is significant. It also seems to me that in this film Raquel Evans dubbed herself...or I think she did, for no Spanish career dubber worth her salt would sound so nervous. Terrible films to be sure, but I did enjoy the clowning of "Pipper" and Alicia Orozco. |

Well, the first batch of Cunillés DVDs has finally come out. The two EL LUTE films have come out separately but I haven't seen the pack of the two films together along wth a third DVD with extras. I've bought one of the "true crime" films, CRIMEN EN FAMILIA. It contained a 30-page booklet with information on the film's background, albeit omitting the uncomfortable fact of the lawsuit brought against the film by the protagonists of the real crime the script was based on. Extras include a television report on a similar real crime. It's anamorphic and with a 1.85 ratio (the film, I think, was really shot in 1.66). And yes, there is an English-language option. I've sampled the English track, and found the voices pathetic, in terms of both age group and suitability for the characters and their facial and body language. Agustín González is dubbed by a lethargic American with a rather young-sounding voice. The Spanish track, with the actors' real voices (except for Cristina Marsillach who was dubbed by someone else), is obviously the one to go for, but there are no English subs. Spanish subs are available. Personally, I don't think that the films by Reguant and Guevara will get as good a treatment. |

Have watched three of the Cunillés DVDs, the Spanish crime films by Pedro Costa and Santiago San Miguel. They are, I think unsuitably matted at 1.85 (lots of heads close to the top of the frame), but the image is great, and SOLO O EN COMPAÑÍA DE OTROS looks glorious (photography by José Luis Alcaine). The Spaghetti westerns and softcore films are not out yet. The Suevia people have told me via e-mail (anyone can send them e-mails for consultation at their site) that no more of the Cunillés films will come out until late November and early 2008. |

21 November: Apart from the mainstream HUIDA AL SUR and ALL TIED UP, more of Cunillés's films are to be released: WHITE APACHE SCALPS Both with English and Italian options in addition to Spanish. Ratio: 1.85. Non-anamorphic. Also the following softcore films, all in Spanish only: EN BUSCA DEL POLVO PERDIDO SUECA BISEXUAL NECESITA SEMENTAL SEÑORA NECESITADA BUSCA JOVEN BIEN DOTADO (something of a Holy Grail for aficionados) NO ME TOQUES EL PITO, QUE ME IRRITO STRIPTEASE (not by Cunillés, and not really softcore; it has Terence Stamp, Corinne Clery, Pilar Velázquez, George Rigaud, Manuel Zarzo, Gerard Tichy, Alberto de Mendoza and Fernando Rey). The two late Spagheti Westerns are non-enhanced; the softcores are enhanced. Make of that what you will. |

Have just bought one (EN BUSCA DEL POLVO PERIDO). Have sampled some scenes and it seems to be a good edition. The film itself, by the way, does not seem to feature Raquel Evans, contrary to what I once said. |

Sadly, the Suevia company appears to have no short term-plans to release their remaining films from their Cunillés catalogue. One, however, has just been issued, namely Piccole labbra / Historia de Eva (1978), by Mimmo Cattaranich, and featuring a curious cast in Pierre Clementi, Katya Berger (William's daughter), Ugo Bologna, Bárbara Rey, Michele Soavi, Maria Monti, Raf Baldassarre, José Luis López Vázquez and Paul Muller. It is non-anamorphic and letterboxed. The language options are Spanish and Italian; Spanish subtitles. |
