Hello,

I noticed you have reviewed many of the recent retro Spanish sexploitations DVD titles. Thanks for those reviews! I have a question perhaps you may have some information.

Other then Jess Franco, who is the most over distributed filmmaker on earth, (all of his films are everywhere) do you know why there are so few (almost nothing at all) DVDs from 1970s and 1980s Spain being made available in that country? I mean there is nothing! For example, as perhaps you know, there were some really well produced erotic films made in Spain just after Franco died in 1975 when censorship was finally lifted. Films with Maria Luisa San Jose, Teresa Gimpera, Maria Jose Cantudo, Patricia Adriani, Fedra Lorente, Barbara Rey, Pilar Valezquez, Rosa Valenty.. there were so many made but none, absolutely NOTHING has been made available on DVD or on Spanish TV.

I'm shocked that nobody at all in Spain is making any effort to make these interesting films available again. Do small DVD companies even exist in Spain?

I know France is really bad at this too. But there is a market for these DVDs. it's just that it's a smaller market, as well all know.

Just wondering if you had any insight into this and if you know of any companies in Spain that are planning to some day release the genre films they made after Franco.

Thanks in any case!

It's not true that absolutely nothing exists on dvd.

There is, for example, the SUEVIA dvd series. Look here: http://z9.invisionfree.com/THE_CINEHOUND_F...p?showtopic=476.

And a couple of years ago many dvds of Spanish sexploitation films were published by label EDIDAR88. See here titles and covers: http://www.videoarcheologia.it/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1933

Well, sorry brains 99 for no replying earlier but I was engaged. I'm glad you liked my postings. As for your question, A.N. has pretty much taken the words out of my mouth.
From the names brains gives, it would seem that his concern lies in the initial "destape" period as opposed to the S-certificate material that has been the subject of my postings. Even in Spain "destape" (nudity erotica) and "S" (softcore erotica) are confused in the public mind. I do not think they are the same. "Destape" involved the actresses mentioned above plus Agata Lys, Emma Cohen, Nadiuska, Cristina Galbó, Fiorella Faltoyano and others. These were farily up-market affairs starring actresses who had already made their mark and sometimes even got coverage in the gossip press. Right now I can think of at least two films of this kind which have appeared on DVD, Jorge Grau's LA TRASTIENDA and STRIPTEASE (the latter of which has been inaccurately released by Suevia as part of their "S" collection). I can't think of others at present; if they have not already been released by Divisa, they probably will sooner or later. And there's also Filmax, who seem willing to release anything.
The ground covered by my postings (usually relying on VHS tapes and DVDRs) has really been the "S" territory. These were grindhouse-type productions featuring specialised actresses who precisely made their names with these films. A.N. has given info on available DVDs and there's more to come in either January or February, I think.
Films within both categories have occasionally turned up on late night TV and several "S" films are on sale by online grey market dealers.
A film starring Candela Peña and Mar Flores called "S" will soon be released. Whether this will rekindle any interest in the genre I don't know.
The Spanish "S" film was soon regarded as redundant at the time of the legalisation of XXX porn, while the "destape" film, a product of another age, was soon seen as campy. This would explain their weakened presence. Now, with companies like Filmax and Divisa, more stuff will emerge, no doubt.

Thanks very much. Yes, you are exactly right, the films I am referring to are the upscale erotic-dramas with "real" actresses like Agata Lys, Emma Cohen, Ana Belen... exactly. I am surprised so few have been released. I do know that previous VHS releases of certain Spanish films like "Fraude Matriminio" and "La Oscura historia de la prima Montse" were censored TV versions of the films. That's too bad.

I'm fearful that if they do get released on DVD they still will not remaster from original sources and again the films will be cut-versions. We'll see if they ever get released first.

Anyway. thanks again for the great replies, I appreciate it.

Here it is a very useful list (rather incomplete, anyway) "del cine de la época del aperturismo español", i.e. pre-S, S, and their outskirts:

May I also add my humble congratulations to Nzoog for his great reviews & all the things we learn from him about Spanish Erotica & Sexploitation. Any chance that he will deal in the future with the very rarely studied issue of Spanish hardcore in the late 1970s & 1980s?

There are some precious gems in there, like La Cana en la Castana or Los Suenos de Loretta, that I haven't, btw, been able to locate in this excellent list brought to our knowledge by Andrea (Many thanks, as usual.... :D ).

I didn't know about Spanish hardcore of the late 70s, which would certainly have been clandestine or corresponding to export versions of sofctore products. After the legalisation of hardcore in 1984 (or perhaps, 1983), there was a spate of Spanish hardcore films but this didn't work too well for a number of reasons and it was over in 1987. Then in the 90s, there was a resurgence.
I would like to add, in response to the kind remarks by skatschko and brains 99, that, inasmiuch as i am still a fledgeling in Spanish sexploitation and sexploitation in general, my reviews, as I look back on them after sometimes as little as a few weeks, are more informed by enthusiasm than scholarship and authority. For example, in my review of PASIONES DESENFRENADAS, I failed to take notice of what I believe is the pseudonymous appearance of non-Spanish sexploitation actresses in the cast. (Is this correct A.N.?)

As for hardcore, dunno what to say except that my beat would really be softcore. I don't know how many hardcores I could watch in a row. Anyway, I have purchased a hardcore feature that is Antonio Mayans's sole effort as a director, so sooner or later I shall post a review. My preferences seem to lie somewhere between those of Skastchko and Brains99. Some of the "S" actresses (and actors), incidentally, could be regarded as "real actresses" (and actors), so to speak, in that, although they specialised in softcore during the "S" period, later on, when softcore was over, they went on to act on the legitimate stage, on TV and in the dubbing studios. One particular actress, in fact, covered the whole gamut of sexploitation: the "destape" period, Jess Franco softcore, Jess Franco hardcore. Now she is a regularly employed voice actress and has played character roles in upmarket films.
As for the titles skatschko has mentioned, I have not been able to find any references on them. Who made or starred in them?

On Spanish h/c cinema there is a book (which I have) called EXXXPAÑA. HISTORIA DEL CINE PORNO ESPAÑOL, by Manuel Valencia and Paco Gisbert, but it deals almost exclusively with Spanish porn cinema of late 80s and 90s.

The first Spanish X movie legally and officially released in Spain was Jess Franco's "Lilian, la virgen pervertida" (released in Madrid in june 1984), but before that a few Spanish films (mostly coproductions) were shot in double version (soft for Spain, hard for foreign markets).

I am sure that also (Reguant's ?) DEPRAVACION was shot both soft and hard (the presence of French porn actress Françoise Perrot is eloquent). As for PASIONES, the leading actors and actresses are not Spanish (and very likely the onscreen credits are mostly fake), but we'll talk this matter over again in private.

The list given in the Spanish "pajilleros" site must be taken with some caution. The film UNA VIRGEN PARA CALÍGULA is listed as UNA VIRGEN PARA DRÁCULA (!). The list also gives separate entries for JULIETA and LAS LESBIANAS Y LA CALIENTE NIÑA JULIETA, which are really one and the same film: this error seems to stem from the Aguilar guide, which also lists them separately and gives a curious cast list later copied by the "pajilleros" filmography: Andrea Albani (yes, right), Jordi Batalla (yes, but in a small uncredited role actually taken from another film) and "Marina Bell" (which may be the real name of Mirna Bel/ Mirna Vel, who is not in this film). The list also renders the name of actor Jaime Bascu as "Jaime Basai" and includes the film SECTA SINESTRA (a horror film with very slight erotic content), whose credits include the misspelled name "Josephone Varney" (that's "Josephine Varney", a pseudonym for Concha Valero).
