Well, here's the Japanese VHS release I just received of the obscure 1984 US horror film EYES OF FIRE!

This film is a real curio. I haven't even seen it in the usual rare video dealers' catalogs. It's just the type of horror film I love: a neglected gem that somehow fell between the cracks and is worthy of a DVD release. Sure, it's not PERFECT (in fact in some places, far from it), but the period detail and atmosphere is superb (especially considering the budget) and when the chills matter, it delivers. Clearly some research into the revolutionary US time period had been conducted, and the European accents seem quite authentic. It also has a wonderfully haunting, dreamy and eerie atmosphere that just slowly grows that really got under my skin like few films. Some have complained of the dodgy optical effects (basically, the use of negative film techniques during the "spirit invasion" scenes) but I thought they were effective in a simple way, and a real breath of fresh air compared to the bloated CG goliaths that glut the screens today. And the makeup effects of the souls trapped in the trees were VERY effective and jolting. Plus it's got a great pseudo-experimental score by the great Brad Fiedel (composer of the TERMINATOR films' soundtracks).

Now for the pics:

The box: *Hey, what's that video placemat beneath the VHS? Why, it's the old Midnight Video Collector's Catalogue #18!

The sleeve: Yeah it has some wrinkling due to water damage, but the price sure was right ($4!) and the tape itself is in very good condition and plays GREAT! The image has been scaled down to fit the forums. If anyone wants the original full-res, full-size sleeve, email me:)

The only 2 releases i know of for CROSS OF THE SEVEN JEWELS were the German video release and Japanese video release. The only German video release i am aware of it having was put out by the now-defunct 'Manic Entertainment', the same people who released my friend's SICK-O-PATHICS around the same time. I take it your video is that release and not some alternate German release i am unaware of?
'Manic Entertainment' released the film uncut and in English but i believe it was fullscreen (or maybe only very slightly letterboxed), correct? I'm pretty sure i have a DVD-R of their old tape somewhere. The Japanese release was fully letterboxed from what i have been told and uncut, but optically fogged. Quality is superior also.
Let us not forget that the film was later re-edited and re-released under the title of TALISMAN many years later also, which i think had at least an American video release at some point...

As for that EYE OF FIRE video original, it looks like an intriguing film. Can't say i have ever heard of it before!
I agree with you 100% about simple visual FX methods being effective even if a little dated in these times when utilized. Some of the films that Mike Murphy made that we will be releasing through SARCOPHILOUS used older methods due to budget constraints and other factors. I think that when a film tries to be modern, cool and stylish on a tiny budget and uses cheap CGi, it is alot worse than watching a film that is shot to capture the feel/tone of an old 1960s Harryhausen-style flick and that opts to use the old methods for FX such as stop-motion or scratching the negative to produce visual FX. I think that is a film has a decent script and alot of passion that the primitive FX methods used often merge with the flavour and tone of the film and we overlook the primitive nature of how they were achieved, instead appreciating the efforts the filmmakers have gone to. This is certainly true of many of Mike's films, especially ATLANTIS which is full of old-style visual FX methods such as scratched/coloured negative, split-screen and other primitive techniques that not only add to the delirious flavour of the film but also actually work in a charming way that fits the film. Add to that gore, raunch and a nutty script and you have plenty to sink you teeth into and the crude methods used become irrelevant!
I may have to nab a copy of EYE OF THE FIRE from you at some point in the future!

The cross of the seven jewels I own was released by ISV ( Incredible Strange Filmworks ) . I guess this ( short-life ) label may be somehow connected with 'Manic Entertainment'. They released some underground splatter like Bride of Frank or Street Trash ... The movie is slightly letterboxed with small german subs .

Anger in his eyes is indeed a Video Universal Holland BV release , but I also expected that cover for the NL release :

and Stephen , your Eyes of fire tape looks great , fantastic artwork ;) ! The movie itself sounds very interresting , I would expect an enchanted atmosphere , maybe comparable to Ridley Scott`s Legend of Darkness ?

I have the VUH (re-)release as pictured at the link you posted, but I'm expecting to get a 1st (blue) release as well...

As I recall this blue (1st) release I'm expecting comes with a blue cover like yours but with the pic of the re-release on it

This would mean there are two different covers for that 1st release...

Great finds ye have there ;)
