Resonator posted this one awhile back, but now I have a copy of my very own! Love the cover and the film (released on DVD here as METAMORPHOSIS: THE ALIEN FACTOR) is a great throwback to 50s monsters movies, but updated with eye-popping creature effects (think THE THING with some great Harryhausen-esque stop motion thrown in for good measure) and gore! And to quote Chas Balun, it doesn't have "flashy camerawork or a hotshit, self-referential script." It's just good fun! *I WOULD post a full-size scan of the sleeve, but this one came in one of those unique Japanese top-loading VHS boxes that doesn't allow easy access to the sleeve. **Does anyone here know what the purpose of this design is? Was it for video rental stores? I'm guessing they kept the box out for display and the tape (with its clear plastic slipcase) behind the counter when the customer rented it (for security purposes). Anyone know?

Ha! This morning a shipload of Dutch ex-rentals arrived at my doorstep. I'm sure not all of them qualify as 'rare', but altogether they make quite an impressive collection, if I do say so myself Here goes:Crocodile (Solar Video) Vendetta (Vestron) Shallow Grave (New York Video, though it looks like a bootleg) Claws (Video Screen) Sweet Sixteen (Best1Video) The Ice Pirates (Esselte CIC) Don't be afraid of the Dark (Lorimar) Munchies (MGM) Phantom of the Mall (Warner Bros.) Savage Beach (Video Screen) Deense snoepjes in Tirol (HCR) Crimes of Passion (RCA/Columbia) Surf Nazis Must Die (Via Video) The Haunted House (aka Witchcraft w/ Linda Blair & David Hasselhoff!) (Concorde) Interface (Vestron) Ghoulies II (Vestron) Rolling Thunder (Orion) They Live (Video Screen) Sky High (BDM Video) Bad Ronald (Lorimar) Death Hunt (CBS Fox) Masks of Death (Lorimar) Mister Deathman (Video Star) Search and Destroy (CNR Video) In the claws of the CIA (Empire) Blood Brothers (w/ Franco Nero) (Palma Video) The Swap (obscure Robert de Niro-movie) (VID Films) Rain of Fire (Video for Pleasure) Ghoulies (Vestron) The Carpenter (Company of Motion Pictures) An Eye for an Eye (Embassy) Loose Shoes (CBS Fox) A Life of a Ninja (NTA Home Video) Road Racers (Domestic) Tarzan the Ape Man (MGM) Bloody Wednesday (RCV) Lady Whirlwind (Spectrum) Fear City (Thorn EMI) Screwballs 2 (CNR Video) Zapped! (Embassy) Galaxina (Video Network) Phantasm III (promotional tape) (Concorde) Provoked (Infinity Video) Zone Troopers (Vestron) Phantasm II (Concorde) Confessions of a Trickbaby (RCV) The Victim (Lightline Video) and... last but not least: Penitentiary II, where sleeve and clamshell are one. I've never seen anything quite like it, but it's gorgeous. I will upload a pic in the future. By Muntel Video. Edit: Not an hour later De Vloek van de Mummie (Dawn of the Mummy) by Video49 arrived. I really need a bigger house... |
