KADI DUSMANI - WOMAN DESPISER (DVD) Turkish giallo (1967) directed by Ilhan Engin Cast: Ekrem Bora, Sema Ozcan, Tanju Korel, Gulgun Erdem, Reha Yurdakul Label: Onar Films (Greece) DVD FEATURES -------------------- 500 hand-numbered copies only! Region 0, PAL Turkish Audio (Dolby Digital 2.0) Subtitles: English, Greek Documentary: Turkish Fantastic Cinema - Part 3 Poster Insert Photogallery Biographies & Filmographies (Ekrem Bora / Ilhan Engin) Onar Trailers Movie Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DxQerSFOHd0 IMDb info: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0431176/ Tonight I finally found the time to watch the new Onar release: KADIN DUSMANI, a Turkish black & white giallo of the late 60s. To tell you the truth I was expecting a good movie, very enjoyable but with a dozen mistakes and probably some boring moments... Well, I was wrong! WOMAN DESPISER (the official English title of the movie) is not just a good movie. It's a GEM! One of the best giallos I've ever seen, with all the "typical" characteristics of the genre: Foggy nights, many plot twists (too many suspects!), eerie orchestral soundtrack, a masked killer with gloves (he wears a devil mask), a perverse plot with too many women's murders - rapes after death (necrophilia) -peeping etc... In fact I don't wanna say too much about the story because I would destroy your joy watching it! Ekrem Bora is very nice as the detective Kemal and Erol Tas (even much younger still looks old!) plays a Peeping Tom (or is he the killer?) holding a strange violin case! In fact acting is over the top for a Turkish movie of the 60s. Another thing that did surprised me is the way director tries hard to shoot a "European" film: No silly folk songs here, just some nice jazzy tunes, and only one oriental scene with a surprising "killer" ending (the dancer decapitates a male mannequin with a sword!). Jared in his Worldweird Cinema review says it reminds him Jess Franco...He couldn't describe it better - it's a Jess Franco scene! Also the women in this film smoke, drink, walk alone at nights, have sex with several men...all elements of an Euro movie of that period! Of course Ayman has already post his review in this forum already: http://z9.invisionfree.com/THE_CINEHOUND_F...topic=1061&st=0 Bill thanks him personally into the opening credits of this DVD for his precious help to make it possible - but I suppose also because Ayman's review gave to Bill the idea to release it! So my thanx go to both men - Bill & Ayman - for the DVD release of this "lost" masterpiece! Turkish cinema? No, it's not Turkish cinema! I mean, anybody out there who loves Italo-Spanish giallos MUST watch this DVD! Because by "Turkish cinema" some people may think about a slow film with tons of folklore and boring elements...or simply a bad made flick. Beleive me, this film can easily stand besides the best giallos of the 60s...No graphic violence & nudity of course...We're talking about the 60s, right? And what about the DVD release? Well, this DVD is for sure one of the best Onar efforts so far! Very good picture & sound quality for a film of this period & country, good subtitles, and many nice extras! The best of course is the 3rd part of Bill's exclusive documentary about the Turkish Fantastic Cinema with Horror and Sci-Fi movies! One important thing I wanna repeat: This DVD is not only for people who wanna watch a great film of the Turkish horror cinema. It's a must for all giallo and Euro-horror fans out there! If someone watch it and REALLY find it "boring" or something...then I permit him to get dressed like the "Woman Despiser" of the movie and come to butcher me (but don't mix-up things here, I'm a man so the rest "activities" are forbidden, OK? )The best place to buy this gem is Onar Films store: http://www.onarfilms.com Also visit the blog for Onar news! http://www.onarfilms.blogspot.com |

Needless to say I agree whole-heartedly. And you're right Miltos in many ways it really does seem to be more of a cheap Italian or Spanish film than a Turkish one, but then you get Erol Tas's ugly mug and you know you're in Istanbul ... This is one of the 3 or 4 best movies Onar has put out if you ask me. |

Congrats on another winner Bill! Maybe not a financial winner (although, here's hoping!) but it sounds like another critical winner for ONAR FILMS! I have no problem admitting that my passion for SARCOPHILOUS FILMS is inspired to some extent by your passion for your own label Bill. Great to see that you continue to slave like a lunatic over these incredible gems and lavish them with as much care and bonus material as finances allow! Keep up the good work my friend....

Thanks mate! And I do hope Sarcophilous won't copycat Onar in terms of flops, although when it comes to losing I have no competition whatsoever...
