 I have to disagree with Bo going Country.....I'd hate to see that happen. I have always listened to Classic Rock, Rock, Pop, etc.... and I try and stay current with all music.....even some country although I don't listen to it or own a single country CD...... There are all different classifications of Rock out there......he definitely fits into one of them...

Speaking of switching genres.... here is an oft-forgotten fact about the might Led Zeppelin: They originally set their sites on being a JAZZ BAND, but could not get the sound and were never accepted by fanns of Jazz music.... yet, music would NEVER be the same had there been no Zeppelin... : ) Bo does have cross-over potential for sure, but I think he would be selling himself short if he just did one type of music. Plus, on a selfish note... : ) I am definitely more of a classic rock/southern rock fan with an affection for some '80's and heavier music thrown in... so.... I am not so sure if I would by Bo's next CD if it is solidly country... although, I must say... I do like the band Alabama. : ) OK... I really should be working, but this thread is very intereting.... |

Oh I am definitely more of a classic rock/southern rock fan than I am any other type of music, but who today is played on those stations? No one that I really know of. There isn't much of a southern rock category out there anymore unfortunately. It mostly seems to me to be alternative rock, soft rock or heavy metal. Not much in between stuff. While I love Three Doors Down, Nickleback and several other groups similar to them, I don't think Bo's music necessarily fits there either. |

Shit...I had written a big long post and when I hit "Post" in was lost. I wasn't saying Bo hasn't done well...appearing on Decades of Rock was awesome...all I'm saying is that he should've been give better opportunities than a 5th placer. Whether or not you still think of him as an "AI" contestant, he will always have that title. I really thought Bo's CD was gonna be rock....kinda Nickelback-ish or Audioslave-ish...certainly not POP! How can you listen to Bo's voice and think "Ohhh POP artist" My fav song on the CD is Lie It's Alright (not including his original music) because it has that rock vibe. I DO NOT listen to country music...sorry just not a fan of it...but I can see how Bo might fit in with that genre. IF he went country (I hope not)...they'd always be comparing him and Carrie and we all know that Carrie has a big head start in the country world. |

Bo's music isn't country, either, though. So there'd be a whole 'nother CD of people writing stuff for him. Geez, I LIKE his music (except VOA, ironically). I think a CD full of stuff like WW&T, AGM and the like would be fine. But he has said that he sees himself as southern rock 'which is now country' (or something like that). If he's going to put out stuff like the new original he debuted near the end of the tour, then yeah...THAT'S country. But again, I don't like the thought of him switching genres. Smacks of desperation to me. *shrugs* I find most people know who he is. They know him from AI. I've talked to a lot of people who really disliked the CD and didn't think any of it sounded like Bo. I don't think RCA gave him the best they could. If they'd done that, they wouldn't have taken him in a pop direction in the first place. JMO. |

Bon Jovi went country in 2006 and won awards for it. It's not "failing" to switch or add another genra, it's just building up your portfolio. Air play is the name of the game and I think he would get more air play on a country station. Like he said, a little kick of some "rock", some soul, some blues. He's not all any one of those genras. He's a little bit of everything! I don't believe he'd ever get much air play on a true "rock" station. The only station that played him in my area was a "light rock" station (who also plays a little country in the mix). UMMB never hit the air here at all. Of course RCA couldn't send him to Arista (which they own) because Carrie was sent there. BTW I find it interesting that he moved to Nashville. ETA He said on bb.com his next CD would have a mix of southern rock, rootsy country and blues. If that's true, that would sell better on a country station. |

He should get out of the Pop genre PERIOD and either go rock or country which will end up being the most impotant decision of his career Sorry for opening up the can of worms by starting this thread :lol |

Here's the thing, country as we know it today IS rock. Southern, rootsy rock. If Keith Urban, Sugarland, and Big & Rich aren't country rock, I don't know what in the world they are... Hell, Bon Jovi, the Eagles, Mellencamp, Skynyrd, and Kid Rock are considered country rock these days. There is no more "southern rock" really. It's been absorbed by country and it's changing the face and the sound of country music. Carrie does have a big start in country, but if Bo can break in there, he'll push her aside and while she's off milking cows and having babies, he'll be making music and building his 30 year career. Personally, I think AI did Bo a huge injustice touting him as a "rocker" cause if you listen to what he writes these days, he isn't even close to being a "rocker" in the traditional sense. Sure he likes rock music, but Bo's said it himself, he likes all gendres (tm him!). Doesn't mean all genres will sell and selling IS important. If you don't sell, you don't make money and you don't get to go on tours or make more CDs. And I think that would make Bo very unhappy. Nickelback or Audioslave fans would have crucified Bo if he had tried to break into that genre. To fit in rock, you have to write your own tunes. HAVE to. Period. I can't imagine any of Bo's music fitting into rock radio. And I agree Kim, much as I love Bo, his stuff ain't current and more importantly, it's not relevant to the average listener. He needs to tap into his angst a bit and get down to the nitty gritty to really write some good stuff. Like I said a while back at BFB, I'm not positive Bo has it in him, but I've seen flashes of greatness and I think he can push himself and grow into a great writer IF he opens up enough to let it happen. Cin, I posted about Bo on a board with over 11,000 members and 5 whole people responded that they remembered him from AI. There were roughly 8 pages of 'I don't know who that is/never heard of him...'. These are people of all ages from all over the world, who like all types of music. genci? Interesting about Zep, I actually never knew that. And Jenn, this has been the most interesting thread on TBE in a long time. I love you for starting it! I love to discuss things like this, especially about something I'm so passionate about.

This is exactly how I felt. I guess to the solid POP minds on AI, Bo was a rocker but not to a rocker's mind. And yes, this is a very interesting thread. |

Truthfully, I don't see why country stations haven't picked up on VOA.... RCA should really funnel VOA their way... for sure, this would drive more fans to Bo. BogartBabe.... I also LOVE, "Lie, It's Alright." I thought I was alone on that one. :P Micki... Glad I could share some rock trivia about Zep. : ) |

I hate to admit it but I DO like Carrie's new song "Before He Cheats" (?). I liked it the very first time I heard it. I'm not a Carrie fan, she screams too much for me, but I did like that song and thought she did it very well. I listen to a lot of country also. Looking forward to Nashville Star, too. But last year's Chris Young is my "country" Bo and I doubt if there will be another one that interested me as much as he does. |

Bon Jovi switched to do a duet for one song. I'm thinking Bo would be switching for his entire career. I dunno.....and Bon Jovi was already long established in their career. I also think AI did him a disservice by labeling him a 'rocker'. Long hair does not a rocker make. You really think Bo could outsell Carrie in the country world? Oh, I don't. At this point I'm concerned about his career, period. He needs something special with the 2nd CD. I'm VERY worried about that. Micki, I can't believe 5 out of 11,000 people knew who he was. WOW! I go on another board, too, and people who loved him on AI always ask me for updates on what he's doing. Even in real life, I rarely encounter someone who has never heard of him...they may not recognize the name initially but as soon as I mention the long hair and AI, it clicks. |
