Calendar Events Tournament Town Goes Downtown Block Party featuring Daughtry In Concert Friday, Mar. 23, 2007 at 8:00 PM Ticket Prices: Free! On Friday, March 23rd, the Tournament Host Committee of Greensboro will host a “Tournament Town Goes Downtown Block Party” beginning at 8:00 p.m. that will feature a concert performance by the band Daughtry. The concert will be held in the Hamburger Square area (McGee & Davie) along Elm Street in downtown Greensboro. Admission is free to the general public and gates will open at 7:00 p.m. Food and beverage stands will be open for concession purchases. The “Tournament Town Goes Downtown Block Party” is being held in conjunction with the City of Greensboro’s hosting of the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Regional (March 24 & 26) at Greensboro Coliseum. “This event is designed to provide a community-wide celebration that showcases our downtown district and demonstrates our community spirit for hosting major college basketball tournaments,” said Tournament Host of Greensboro Committee chairman Dr. Harrison Turner. “This event has been specifically created to showcase Greensboro, North Carolina as an NCAA Women’s Final Four destination with night-life and special event activities to support a major national event.” Headlining the concert will be the band Daughtry, led by frontman Chris Daughtry of McLeansville, NC. Chris burst on to the music scene last year as a contestant on FOX’s wildly popular “American Idol” television program. Following his Top 10 finish on season five of American Idol, Chris formed the band Daughtry and recently released the group’s smash-hit, self-titled debut release. Daughtry is currently the No. 1 selling album on the latest Billboard chart. “To secure a group of Daughtry’s overwhelming popularity, particularly with Chris’ local ties, will make this a tremendous event,” said Greensboro Coliseum managing director Matt Brown. “We expect a huge turnout and the Coliseum plans to feature the success of this concert as a major element of our upcoming bid to host the 2012 Women’s Final Four.” Opening for Daughtry will be the Greensboro based alternative rock group Athenaeum. Athenaeum broke onto the scene in 1998 with its debut album Radiance, which spawned the Top 20 Alternative hit "What I Didn't Know", as well as the fan favorite "Flat Tire." |
