THE PHANTOM #20

Written by Mike Bullock
Art by Zeu
Colors by Bob Pedroza
Cover by Marat Mychaels

32pgs, color, $3.50

"Worth Beyond Measure"

From the Chronicles of the 13th Phantom comes a swashbuckling tale of adventure on the high seas! In the days after the Musketeers of the Guard were eliminated by King Louis the XVIII, three former members of the King's faithful will do anything to regain their former glory, including stealing the Heart of Lafitte! What is the Heart and why will the Phantom risk his life to get it back? Featuring special guest artist Zeu!

I am liking the sound of this :D It's going to be cool to see how Mike handles this kind of story, as this will be his first story from the Chronicles!

And I'm pretty sure that this is the story that Paul will be featured in (after winning the Phantom contest) and also, Niko (a phan from the Moonboards) will be also be thrown in there (if even for only a panel). I'm looking forward to see how those things turn out  Plus, Zeu's doing the art so it's all good :D

Paul is in issue 21. And MAN does he have a cool job.

Niko is in issue 20, not looking anywhere near as cool as Paul, unfortunately.

Ok, so Niko may only be appearing in one panel, but, I always love it when people show up out of the blue in the books I'm reading (eg: Lee Falk in Phantom #7) :)

Man, I somehow did not see this comment until now! That is so cool to hear, I can't wait to see the issue!

Amazing!! I am so curious to see which character has my face. Maybe I get to steal Diana from Kit or something. ;)

By the way, expect this issue to fly away from the shelves quickly, as my entire family seems to want to own a copy now. :D

This was a nice, one-shot story telling a tale of the thirteenth Phantom, set during the reign of Louis XIV of France. I personally love the occasional Chronicle Adventure because the historical aspect of the Phantom is one of the things that make him unique in comics. I find them to be a great way to "cleanse the palate" between multi-issue arcs of the current Phantom.
The art of this issue was good, though in some spots a little lacking in detail, particularly in backgrounds. Zeu's style seems to lean more to the "cartooney" style rather than the realistic style. This isn't meant as criticism in itself, because I love the early work of John Byrne, who also works in a more cartooney style, for lack of a better term.
The story itself was fun; adventure, swordfights and a touch of romance! I think it might have benefitted from a few more descriptive captions to narrate the story, perhaps in the voice of the thirteenth Phantom. I'm a sucker for stories that involve swordfights and fencing anyway! :D
I wonder if Moonstone would ever consider a spin-off series dealing exclusively with Chronicle Adventures, because the story possibilities and settings for this would be endless!
This issue was a good read, I give it 4 Good Marks out of a possible five. A nice, lighter story to contrast with the darker, heavier adventure that I believe is just down the road for our hero!

Moonstones cover price is a little bit higher than that of the big two (DC & Marvel), but I think that they are going after a bit of an older audience with their choice of material, one with slightly deeper pockets! ;) The characters that their line is featuring seem to have a bit of nostalgia built into them. I agree that having an issue sold out at a comic shop is a good sign, perhaps for next months order they'll order a few more copies, thereby increasing Moonstone sales! More sales, bigger share of the market, eventually leading to WORLD DOMINATION!!!! BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAH! :D

I'd say it's more likely because they are a small, independent publisher who doesn’t have anywhere near the market size of Marvel or DC so they need to have higher cover prices to cover costs.

I don't think Moonstone's books are all that expensive. That is, the cover price is very affordable, but the cost of getting them sent all the way to Norway is what prevents me from not getting to order their stuff as often as I would like to.

Besides, I find Moonstone's Phantom series a lot more interesting than any other American comic book I've had my hands at the last few years, so it's definetely worth it. They have done an excellent job with my favourite character, and keep introducing him to new people, which is fantastic.
