Seeing as we have a thread on DVDs I thought we could also have a thread discussing what movies we have recently seen at the cinema. Most recently I saw Beowulf. I didn't know much about Beowulf at all apart from it being an Old-English tale and having an influence on Tolkien when we wrote LotR. Honestly the main reason I saw the film was because Neil Gaiman co-wrote the script. For those who may not know the entire film is CG. All of the actors wore motion capture suites during filming and then the effects guys built the characters you seen on-screen over their performances. The result is, in instances, spectacular. Apparently the technology used in the film was the next evolution of what was used to make Polar Christmas or something with Tom Hanks. While in some small scenes the digital characters still look a little stiff there are other moments where you could swear they were real people! As a film in itself I really enjoyed it. It is out and out fantasy with monsters, magic and a brilliant biffo with a dragon so if fantasy isn't your bag then you'd best skip this. However, if you enjoyed the LotR films or even Harry Potter than you should check this out! |

Watched The Golden Compass in the theatre. Poor movie, with hollow characters and too little screen time to develop the story properly. |

No, just normal.
Hmm, I've been considering seeing this or not. I tried to read the first book a little while ago but found it boring and only got about halfway through before I put it down. After what you have said I think I'll skip it. It's funny, all the studios seem to be looking for the "next LotR" but aren't really getting there. That isn't to say some of the recent fantasy films haven't been brilliant, but you see they hype for them and it's all "Oh, this is going to be better than LotR." and "This will have people talking like LotR" but it just hasn't happened. Hopefully, if the Neverwhere film gets made THAT will be the new LotR!

I saw Beowulf and like Dougy I did not know much about it prior to seeing it - but it surprised me and I thought it was a reasonable film without being outstanding. The last film I saw was Hitman - which I was similar to Beowulf, in having no idea about it other than that it was from a computer game (which is usually not a good omen). Upon seeing it I thought it was okay and probably the best computer game adaption I have seen - which isn't necessarily saying much.

I don't think even Peter Jackson could recapture the LOTR magic with his King Kong (which I really enjoyed though, but it would have benefited from cutting at least twenty minutes of footage). Before LOTR, I don't think we had seen such a great trilogy since the original Star Wars, so it might take some time before we get something of that quality again. Golden Compass had no character development at all; the great Daniel Craig got about ten minutes of screentime, and the story was at times very confusingly told. Rent the DVD if you have to see it, that's my suggestion.
I have played the latest three Hitman games, and they're all terrific. I really look forward to buy the DVD, sadly, the film will not be released in theaters here.

This week I saw Fred Claus (basically because there was little else on that I had not seen) - it was a total stinker. Half a star out of 5.
While today I went and saw National Treasure - Book of Secrets. It was a pretty good film in the mold of the first saga. 3 and a half stars out of 5.

I quite liked the first NT film, even if the American-isms did get a little much after a while. I love a good adventure film so I'll probably check this out. |

I am not sure if NT is based on a book or just a script, but the storylines are somewhat similar to some of the storylines from author Clive Cussler, although the two movies that have been made from his novels have not been outstanding successes (Raise the Titanic [1980] & Sahara (2005). |

Well The Hobbit is now officially back on, with Peter Jackson producing (unfortunately not directing). It is to be released in two parts, which I really dont get. Its a relatively (in comparison with any of the LOTR books) short story, stretching it over two movies just seems like milking it. It will be interesting to see who gets cast, and if any of the LOTR actors return. |

It may be a shorter story than the LotR's three parts but there is still a lot in it. If you look at any of the book-to-film adaptations that have appeared over the years there is always a heap of stuff left out. Even in the LotR films heaps of stuff from the books never made it into the films. No, I could easily see The Hobbit as a two part film. Riddles in the Dark is about half way through the novel so finishing the first film off with the discovery of the Ring would be a brilliant place to leave audiences hanging. It's also the point where the action really picks up. So you'd have this big battle with all these goblins in the Misty Mountains, the scene with Gollum, a daring escape from the goblin caves, the film ends then part two you have Mirkwood, the dwarves and Bilbo being captured by the wood elves, the Lonley Mountain, Smaug, the Battle of the Five Armies. Yes, these could be very, very cool films. |

If they get someone like Guillermo Del Toro to direct, the Hobbit should be in excellent hands. However, I believe the second movie was actually said to be an all new story or something like that... Or am I wrong? Silmarillon, maybe?

All new story? Ok ,that is just scary. I don't think it'd be the Simarillion, tat'd be way too hard to make into a film. |

I recently went and saw I am Legend - starring Will Smith - I enjoyed the film and it tended to evoke some deep thought about what it would be like to be in the isolated situation that Smith's character finds himself in in this film - it is hard to fathom really. Despite overall liking the film I found that it seemed to be as short as it could possibly be in the circumstances and would have liked a bit more running time and therefore depth added to the story - the 30 mins. of adverts and previews in a movie that ran for about an 1 hour 40 was an ominous sign. Thus, I walked away feeling that I would have got a lot more from the book.
