A reasonable idea, but a poor execution. A list of muck ups: - The Phantom's outfit was wrong - Why would Turan go with the Phantom if he was giving up his mantle?? - Where did the horses come from when the Phantom trails Ramon to where he is holding Marabella? - Marabella asks Don Rastrillo how he came to the skull cave, but there is no answer, this was 1549 - when it would have been even more difficult to reach the area than today  - Showing The Phantom's face (even if he was willing to give up the position of The Phantom at the time) , is a BIG NO NO!! - Killing guards - perhaps this is possible because the Phantom's position had not been fully ratified, but not necessary - The Phantom stabbed, but in the next scene he has miraculously recovered and by Marabella's bedside  |

The first Phantom had a large skull on his waist, not the smaller or more traditional skull with lines and triangle pattern. |

Got to agree with your list Trimmer, I can make allowance for the difference in the Phantom's outfit, but why does Egmont find it neccessary to slowly rewrite the origins of the Ghost Who Walks? Last year we were served up the Crusader angle and a Skull ring, what will be next, the Phantom's ancesters came from Ice Land??? the phantom, the skull cave ect. transplanted from Bengalli to Stockholm or Oslo, the Pigmy Bandar turn out to be Trolls??? The mind boggles

Apart from the Phantom Costume and what seems to be a couple of holes where things are missed out such as the phantom stabbed, the horses and the guy rocking up at the skull cave i think its an enjoyable story things i don't have a problem with - Showing The Phantom's face this is still the first phantom so the mythology around his mask is still evolving and i don't think they are quite at the stage of those who see the phantoms face die - Killing guards the phantom has killed plenty over the years still if they didn't have the words kill repeated over and over during the fight it would have looked like the majority of sword fights The only thing about this story that really annoyed me was Jim's message from the publisher which down played and criticized the story surely if you are trying to sell someone something you talk about how good it is and if you cannot find enough to talk about tell us whats coming up over the next few issues rather that saying things like its full of contradictions even if it is theres nothing more off putting that reading how crap the story is going to be in the message from the publisher if it wasn't so cheap and didn't have Singh in it it would have gone back on the shelf before i had even read the actual story. |

He only had a large skull on his waist the very first time he created the costume, surely he didn't use it the entire time he was Phantom? Someone had to put the more traditional skull with lines and triangle pattern to use first, and most likely it was the first Phantom, because that big (monkey?) skull must have been impractical. The appearance of the first Phantom's costume (including his civilian outfit where he shows the eyes) are consistent with previous Team Fantomen stories about the first Phantom, see "The Ring" (Frew #1341), "Mystery in Rome" (Frew #1342) and "The First Phantom" (Frew #1051) for example. |

Since it has never been explained where the change came about, it should not be taken for granted that the 1st Phantom made the change to the outfit. It may be worthwhile for a writer/creator to come up with a reason for the change and at the same time the evolvement of The Phantom in the early transition period from mere mortal to Ghost Who Walks! |

Well, that's worth thinking about. However, Team Fantomen never went that way as they got rid of the big skull a long time ago in stories set right after the liberation of the Bandars from the Wasaka. So it probably won't/can't be explored further in a Team Fantomen story, and thus "The Great Deception Pt 1" is consistent with these previous stories (and the look of the costume is not a mistake per se). |

My thoughts on a possible reason for the change from a larger silver skull emblem on the belt would be for this reason, the size and weight would be impracticable in a physical skirmish, plus it would get uncomfortable and cause a problem in a long distance swim.

I did like the story, but the "I won't be the Phantom anymore" thing didn't receive as much focus as I wished it would... I would much have preferred a significantly darker story dealing only with this theme, instead of combining it with a plot which makes it feel slightly rushed. Oh, and Joan Boix is terrific in colour. Absolutely magnificent. |

The first Phantom proabably did not have much of a belt like later Phantoms to hold guns, most likely a sheath for a sword would have been the main implement that was attached. Perhaps one could see the larger skull being removed when The Phantom carried a gun all the time, and started to wear a belt, allowing for a different design to go along with the new device, but since guns had to be re-powdered making firing slow up until the 1860s it may not have been before this period that the Phantom regularly carried pistols as they were more likely used for duelling than any other form of combat. |
