We all know there are certain rules filmmakers must follow, and here is a not very thoughtful, VERY subjective look at it, along with some off-the-record suggestions for how I, in my endless wisdom....

This is one funny article taht also makes some very good points. And i think Danny Devito would be a great Guran. And Samuel L Jackson as Colonel Worobu. |

Maybe because of his age Clive Owen could be the 20th Phantom. Billy Zane could be the 1st. |

Thanks for running the article, JD! ![]() Also, thanks for the good words Geaghs, it is meant to be kind of tounge-in-cheek, but I did try to get out some serious points. When thinking of it, I like the idea of Jackson as Worubu. He might be a bit too old (how old is Worubu?!) but the guy looks twenty years younger than he is (I believe he is around 60!). William H. Macy would be perfect for Weeks if they used him. I think Clive Owen could easily be the 21st Phantom too. The likes of Daniel Craig, Robert Downey Jr. and Hugh Jackman has proved that audiences doesn't need baby-faced twenty year olds to star in their action movies, which I am thankful for. I re-watched The Punisher some days ago, and it struck me that the underrated Thomas Jane could be a good choice for a darker Phantom, if he bulked up as much as he did to play Frank Castle. As for Billy playing the 1st Phantom, I can't imagine that would ever happen, but the idea is good. However, what would be even cooler for me would be to have him reprise the role of the 21st Phantom in the Sci Fi series (which I still hope doesn't get off the ground) in a flashback or something. He still looks great at the age of 40 (or so). |

Great article Paul... you covered so many key points there . I hope the director and writer do come across your list when they research the character during pre-production.
This is something I always wanted in a Phantom film, I don't know how they can achieve it.. but I hope they find a way. Maybe it can those small white lens similar to Batman's mask, which is shown sometimes in the Batman comics and animated series. |

Thanks a lot mate! It's much appreciated. ![]() I am sure there would be a way to make the eyes "vanish" behind the mask. I agree Batman is a good example here. I actually saw a cool Batman fan film where the actor wore white contact lenses, and it gave him a much more frightening look than it had if he hadn't used them. Another good example is the way Pat Quinn draws the Phantom for Moonstone... If you check out Stones of Blood and The Aviatrix, the eyes looks a bit more realistic; more like real eyes both in their look and "movement". I think it could work really well on the screen. There were moments in The Dark Knight where they digitally gave Christian Bale white eyes, and it looked absolutely spectacular. Many claim the eyes of an actor are too important a tool to be "covered up", but I think a talented performer could make it work anyway. Visible pupils does not a good performance make. ![]() Off course, having the face of the actor who plays Kit never shown in the film wouldn't work at all on the screen, but like Lee Falk says in the A&E Documentary, when you see his eyes behind the mask he just becomes an ordinary man. |

Yeah that was in Sandy Collora's short film "Batman: Dead End", before Batman Begins came along that short film was considered by many as one of the best live action approach to Batman. It sure was a great piece of short film. I think it can work and that's how it should be , like Hugo Weaving in "V for Vendetta". Most superhero comic character's alter ego faces are known to the comic readers and they continue the same approach in the movies. But Phantom comic readers have never seen Kit's face and the same should apply to the Phantom movie watching audience. |

Thanks for the link, it was really cool to see that film again. It IS really well made. Also, it proves that using tights on the screen doesn't necessarily make you look like Adam West or something. ![]() Good example of Weaving as V... I had forgotten about that one. However, I'm just not sure if never showing the face at all would work for audiences... The Phantom is arguably different from V in that moviegoers should be able to root for him and idenfity with him, and I think they'd need to see his face to do so. Still, I'm not going to pretend that it wouldn't be awesome, and very original, to not show it, especially for longtime fans of the character. |

Now I am imagining how it will be with Rorschach in Watchmen, audience will surely root for him even though they don't get to see his face.. for a while anyway .
