Tim Boyle, the writer and director of the proposed new film, The Phantom Legacy, agreed to take time out of his busy schedule to answer a few questions about the film and his vision for it in this world-first interview!

That was a pretty good read. I have a few questions as well. Like will there be pygmies in it? And can I work on it, damn it? I need to. :)

Since you live in Australia at least there's a chance for you :)

Although I guess the hiring of staff is not up to Tim (unless he signs on to direct aswell.

It was a very good read, and for several reasons this announcement sounds much more concrete than all previous rumored Phantom films. I have some questions too; maybe if Tim is up for it we can start a thread here and collect questions for a future interview when the film is further along in development.

I wish he could have mentioned some more details, though, about villains and such. Still, very nice to hear Luaga and Worubu will make their screen debuts.

As for the costume, I hope he's read the 1995 Marvel miniseries.

I read somewhere that Jon Favreau, the Iron Man director, answered fans' questions on his Myspace. Also, Steven De Souza was very generous with his time when he was on the Ghost Who Walks project years ago.

Also, fantastic to hear Boyle considers the white eyes an integral part of the character. Fingers crossed the costume designer agrees!

Thanks Joe... lot of good questions there which got answered. I am very happy with some of Boyle's choices.. darkness to the character, white eyes and I am sure he will choose a costume which will appeal to both Phans and moviegoers.

I really hope Boyle gets on board to direct the movie as well, cause it looks like he really knows what the Phantom character should be.

Sure, it's a long time to wait, but for a movie of this scale, it's common, and mostly necessary, I guess. Quantum of Solace took two years to make, and although I was happy because of that before I saw the film, I now wish they had taken another year to work more on the script and such (it had some plot holes you could drive Titanic through).

And since building of hype seems to be very important for comic book movies, I think it's only natural to announce it this early. Judging from the mostly very positive reactions I've seen on the web, they've already succeeded getting many comic book readers excited about the project. :)

If the movie succeeds, 3 years is not too long but if it stinks....

Guess they also have to get directors, actors, location to film etc and im sure that will take a bit. I wonder how much the 96 flop will affect people jumping on board the Legacy movie??

I'd say he would be as he said he'd keep us up-to-date with the goings on of the film. However, I'll run the idea by him. He's been very generous thus far!

Agreed since the first thing i herd about this film was back in September there is still a long way to go.

Its the same with every film whether its a bad film or good film. the planning, casting, costume/ set making plus six months plus for filming a 2 hr movie then post production editing special effects ect all takes Time. usually anywhere between two years to five or even ten in some rare cases.

And since to my knowledge all they have are the movie rights and a script there is still plenty to do so 2011 sounds like a reasonable release date (remember this can be brought forward or pushed back).

As of yet there hasn't been any real promotion for the film just talk that its being made (like with all films)

I'm sure some people didn't see Batman Begins because of Batman and Robin, but it was still a big success.

I'm more worried about the Sci Fi series turning off people, really. Today's kids and teenagers, who are major target group for most comic book movies, won't remember a 1996 movie that wasn't very popular and starred "that Titanic guy", I think.

While I love the title, maybe it would be wise to call it simply The Ghost Who Walks from a commercial standpoint... :hmm:

I think they announced possible movies early to see what peoples reactions are to the project. It's good to get the fans excited too.

Paul, maybe I don't run through right circles, but I don't know of many non-comics fans who get excited about these potential comic book movies. If producers relied primarily on the fans for sales, they would be quite dissappointed. We make up only a small fraction of their potential audience. Look at the comic book sales here in the U.S. - only a few thousand for The Phantom and maybe 200,000 for the X-Men. In fact, these early announcements are generally only from comics related news sites.
I'm not sure how many non-comic book fans actually look forward to these films, but this year, A LOT of people has seen them in theatres.

As for comic book sales, remember the Phantom once had a hundred million readers in papers, and still reaches many people through that format.

Maybe comic book readers can participate slightly in making a film a success... I know that I will end up dragging every friend and family member I have to the cinema when TP:L comes out.

I don't think anybody had even heard about Iron Man here in Norway before the movie, there have been like five comic books published with him here, but still I believe around 300 000 people went to see the movie.

But sure, I get your point. I often "avoid" hype deliberately (I rarely even watch trailers these days) since it is, as you say, easy to "burn out". One of the reasons why I felt Iron Man was ridicilously overrated was probably that it felt like I had already seen the movie several times through the countless trailers and TV-spots, and the version "in my head" was more interesting to me than the actual film.

And watch TDK, mate. It IS a great film (and this comes from somebody who was skeptical if it would be as over-praised as Iron Man before actually seeing it. It blew me away).

However, there is no way possible I can avoid being absolutely psyched by a movie based on my favourite character, the Phantom. I won't even try!
